The
"OPIHI SHELL"STORY
The Hawaiian "Opihi Shell"
is found only in Hawaii and nowhere else in
the world. In ancient times
it was used as a scraping tool, fishook ,fishing
lures, cooking utensil and
was also a treasured personal jewelry worn by
the "Alii" or ruling chiefs.
The opihi (limpet) is a prized delicacy and to
this day many islanders
still risk their lives in gathering this shellfish for
food. Its camparable cousins
are the oysters, clams, abalone. Under its
crusted body and hardened
ridges is a layer of pearl like quality and it is
this layer that is used to
create ornaments, necklace pendants and other
hawaiian style products.
