Although this aircraft has no nickname, It actually started the Spyplane era. With the Cold War high and running, the CIA asked Lockheed Skunkworks to develop a, at the time "Surveilance Aircraft" to detect Russian missiles. A guy named Kelly Johnson developed the basic structure for the U-2 but ended up letting workers finish the u-2 with his input. To hide the U-2 from Russian Sattelites, the CIA had to find an isolated area where no one would suspect. The result, AREA 51. A wonderful place that no one would dare go to for 4 years earlier, an Atomic Bomb had been tested. This was a plus to the Skunkworks. AREA 51 is now used for testing of super fast ans super secret black projects such as the SR-71 Blackbird development. Unfortunatley, the US Government denies the existance but once was forced to admit it and has made VITAl mistakes in budgets and so forth. Today, the U-2 is rarely used for actual Recon missions. After the deveoplment of others such as the SR-71, there is no need for older and out of date aircraft. It has been suspected that ALL sptplanes will be overrun by an aircraft called SENIOR CTIZEN or the name that appeared on the 1996 budget, AURORA. |
