Second Semester Writing Project

Due Dates:

1st Draft: Monday, March 5

2nd Draft: Monday, March 12

Final Draft: To Be Announced…

Dates are subject to change.  Pay attention to the dues dates on the agenda in class.

You will be writing several drafts of this piece of writing.  TYPE AND SAVE YOUR WRITING ON A COMPUTER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!  If you have your writing saved, you won’t have to re-write the whole paper.  Just make the changes and print a new copy.  Typing is not required, but it is certainly recommended to make this assignment a lot easier!  Remember to turn in all work in your writing folder.

Leads and 1st Draft – Choose a topic to write about from the ideas we’ve been generating ideas in class.  Write an attention-grabbing lead, then finish the rest of the story.  We’ll be sharing leads in class for credit.  Make sure you label your lead.

Snap-shots involve the five senses (imagery).  Following the “see it, hear it, feel it” lesson in class, add at least two snapshots to your writing.

Thought-shots show what a person is thinking or feeling about something.  Find at least one spot in your writing where you can add a thought-shot.  Write it on a separate piece of paper, then add it to your story.

Figurative language – add similes, metaphors, and personification to your writing to give it more “flair.”

Dialogue makes characters come alive in your writing.  It really puts the reader in your story and makes your writing more interesting to read.  Plus, it’s a great way to make your writing longer!  In class, we’ll work on adding and editing dialogue to your writing.

2nd Draft – Now that you’ve made changes to your writing, make a new copy to bring to class.  Include snap-shots, thought-shots, dialogue, and fill in any other “gaps.”  Be specific, adding details and explanations where necessary.  Try to have this draft as complete as possible.  It’s always a good idea to have someone read your writing and give you feedback about what to change or add.

Mechanics lessons – We’ll be reviewing comma rules, as well as learning about semi-colons, colons, and other punctuation.   We’ll also review how to write complete sentences.

Final Draft
– After editing your writing, make a final copy and turn in all work and rough drafts in your writing folder.
