Reading Logs

* For independent reading, you choose the books you want to read (magazines, newspapers, and comic books do not count).  You should read
100 pages/minutes per week.

* Record all the pages/minutes you've read on your reading log.  Make sure you fill in all sections on the reading log!

* Turn in your reading log every two weeks (usually on Friday).  You will lose 5 points (out of 20) if you do not have a parent signature verifying the number of pages/minutes you've read!

* Reading logs are turned in every other Friday (two weeks worth of reading) and will not be accepted after one day late.  Late reading logs are marked down 5 points.

Grading:
200+ pages/minutes -- 20 points
175-199 -- 17 points
150-174 -- 15 points
125-149 -- 13 points
100-124 -- 10 points

* There will be
extra credit offered each marking period. You may choose a book to read that meets the requirements and write a book review.  Books must be pre-approved by Mrs. Miller.

1st marking period -- current books (2007-2008)
          2nd marking period -- award-winning books
3rd marking period -- multicultural literature
          4th marking period -- verse/poetry novels

Your book review needs to be a final copy and IN YOUR OWN WORDS!  Book reviews must contain the following information:

• Author and title (correct spelling, capitalization, and underlined title)
• Information about the main characters
• Information about plot (rising action, climax, DON’T GIVE AWAY THE END)
• Things you liked about the book
• Things you didn’t like or were confusing (maybe questions you still have)
• Info about the author, if possible
• Overall recommendation and why

* At the end of each marking period, students will indicate the best books they've read that marking period.  At the end of the year, students will create a book advertisement or commercial for the best book they've read, and/or research and write a letter to an author who has inspired them this year.
