Hillel Structure -- The Jewish Leadership Council and Campus Groups Prior to the current year, Hillel at Stanford was one of the few strong Hillels nationwide that had no unified student leadership body. As a result, there was lack of student ownership over programs; no unified student vision for Jewish community on campus; and communication and programmatic gaps that negatively affected Jewish life and community on campus. In response, during the 2001-2002 year a group if visionary students along with the Hillel staff fostered the development of Stanford’s first-ever Jewish leadership organization, the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC). The JLC is a student board responsible for developing a vision for and building Jewish life on campus. The 2001-2002 school year was the first year of its existence. Though it had some initial challenges, the JLC has now begun to function effectively, with regular meetings, subcommittees to address different areas of Jewish life, and several programmatic successes. The following is the JLC's mission statement, a product of the new JLC Constitution put into effect by the 2002-2003 Board: "The mission of the Jewish Leadership Council is to promote an inclusive, vibrant Jewish community that fulfills the needs of Jewish students and enhances the quality of Jewish life at Stanford." The JLC is made up of committee heads who oversee various aspects of Jewish life. Below are the titles, names, and e-mail addresses of the new 2002-2003 JLC Board: President - Lizzi Heydemann '04 (heyliz@stanford.edu) Vice President - Jed Rich '05 (jedr@stanford.edu) Financial Chair - Vicky Schwartz '04 (vls@stanford.edu) Social Chair - Adam Grunfeld '03 (grunfeld@stanford.edu) Education Chair - Sophie Roberts '05 (sbr@stanford.edu) Shabbat Chair - Sarah Israel '05 (slisrael@stanford.edu) Holiday Chair - Danny Greene '05 (dmg@stanford.edu) Social Action Chair - Avi Yotam '05 (ayotam@stanford.edu) Each chairperson oversees a student planning committee. The JLC meets weekly to discuss programming and various issues surrounding Jewish life. Board members work closely with the Hillel staff, forming important partnerships. As of the 2002-2003 school year, a newly formed Allocations Committee will be responsible for distributing Hillel's programming budget to Jewish students and student groups who wish to put on programs throughout the year. Students will be responsible for allocating money to other students allowing for stronger student input Jewish program programming. Anyone student who requests funding from Hillel will approach the Allocations Committee in order to request and receive their desired funding. There are also independent student groups that create programming in specific interest areas. Below is a list of the Jewish student groups on campus: AEPi Fraternity Camp Kesem (Camp Magic) Israeli Student Organization (ISO) Jewish Arab Muslim Dialogue Group (JAM) Kennedy Kosher Co-op Neged Ra'av (Against Hunger) Stanford Israel Alliance (SIA) Stanford Jewish Women's Collective Stanford Student Jewish Appeal (SSJA) Yeledim Korim (Children Read) Jewish Business Students Association (JBSA) Jewish Law Students Association (JLSA) Jewish Medical Students Association (JMSA) Jewish Graduate Students Association (JGSA) |
