Kyōgen

               Japan’s comic theater tradition

 

Over the summer of 2004, I participated

in the Kyoto Traditional Theater Training program

in Kyoto, Japan. This was a three-week program

with mini-workshops in a number of forms

of traditional Japanese theater and an

intensive focus on one.  I choose kyōgen.

At right, I appear just before going on

stage in the role of the master to my

wayward servant, Tarōkaja, played here

by professional clown Sean Hartman.
