What is happening in the Middle East?

Spring/Summer 2002

Having taken a closer look at an atlas, and noting the countries that form the Middle east; having read and reflected on the "suicide" note a 14 year-old Palestinian left as he and other two friends decided to infiltrate a Jewish Settlement in the Gaza strip, I have come to the following conclusions.

One Palestinian and his friends was killed by the Israeli army. Why? They went to the Israeli area with makeshift arms to resist the Israelis. Why did a Palestinian boy, young Zaguot, commit such an act? Zaguot lived in the Gaza strip, which is a Palestinian territory--effectively so, because Palestine and Israel concluded a treaty. But since the treaty, Israelis began living in the Gaza strip, increasing the size and amounts of Jewish settlements, there. Therefore the Palestinians find it increasingly hard to live there. Finally, Zaguot determined to terrorize a nearby settlement. In addition, other acts of terror have happened, since. I think Palestinian terror is right.

Although their way of resistance is wrong, they do not have any other way, and this way is the most authentic, given their circumstances and the imbalance of military power. Therefore their resistance is not wrong. There are four reasons.

First, the Gaza strip is Palestinian area. Though 2000 years ago, this land was originally Israeli territory; now, however, the territory is essentially Palestinian. Besides, the two nations already have made an agreement.

Second, the Gaza strip is too small to allow such heated opponents to live together. The Gaza strip is large enough to accept the current population of Palestinians in the area. But there is not enough territory to receive Israelis. With the continued influx of Israelis, the Palestinian area in the Gaza strip is becoming smaller and smaller; making the social climate for the Palestinians harder and hard to live in and accept.

Third, the tightening quarters, there, increses the possibility of their being more fighting between the two tribes. They will continue to have bad feelings toward one another, as. the Israelis continue to afflict what they feel are justified reprisals upon the Palestinians. In turn, more terrors appear, back and forth, continuously. Therefore we can only expect that the Gaza strip may be more dangerous than now.

Fourth, Palestine is weaker than Israel. If Israel obtains the Gaza strip, they might increase, in part. But, if palestine lose this territory, they might in effect be losing most of their own, prime territory.

In short, Palestine must have the Gaza strip because, that area is Palestinian and the region is too small to allow both peoples to live together. As the heated tension between the two makes possible and likely they will fight; and since Palestine is so much weaker then Israel, then Palestinians should have the area. This conclusion results not only in a Palestinian profit, but also results in a greater benefit for all of the world's global village. Therefore let us thereby encourage the world of mutual peace and coexistence.

Thank you.
