It's Jochen Fopp, the guitarist of "Mirror of Deception" who will answer my questions.
Aux Vents des Royaumes: What are your influences? Mirror of Deception: Mainly classic doom bands such as Candlemass, St. Vitus, Count Raven, Trouble, Solitude Aeturnus and of course Black Sabbath. But we listen to a lot of different stuff (Progressive, Gothic, New Age, Folk and a bit of Death Metal). So maybe we get also influences from other sides.
AVDR: What are the themes of your lyrics? MOD: On the first demo were about environmental problems ("mirrro of Deception"), strange dreams ("Within my dreams") and the typcial feeling that nothing happens the way it should ("Lost"). Meanwhile I took over the lyrical side of the band and I write about very personal things like barriers in any kind of human relationship (lovem, freindship, family... -> "Words unspoken"), failed lovestories ("Chapter X"), and hard to explain, obscure things ("Mysterious"). I prefer to write such lyrics than fantasy stuff, because it's easier to get into the right mood and to deal with all these things.
AVDR: What is the mirror of deception? MOD: It's a mirror that makes everything look distorted and twisted You surelly know this from fairs or big festivals where you often find some kind of mirror cabinets. We have chosen this name because we think it's easy to remember and it fits our music.
AVDR: Who is for you the band that represents THE doom metal? MOD: Difficult question! Maybe Candlemass who got me into the whole doom thing ("Solitude" you know) or Count Raven who play a very basic way of doom metal. I love Candleamss for the way they use melodies and Messiah was just godly (what a pity that he had to leave) and Count Raven because they have simple but brilliant riffs. But I love also all the other bands I mentioned before too. Andwhat about Black Sabbath? They were so much more than just doom...
AVDR: What for you makes a good doom band? MOD: Good songs and a true dedication to the whole doom metal thing: you don't ahve to be a very good musician to do that (we're far away from being good musicians) you should simply be able to express your feelings in your music. That's waht it's all about. I do also like it if they have a good live show - nothing special but it has to be intense that the audience can recognize that you're into what you're doing: I do also like it if a band has a sense for good melodies.
AVDR: Have you got any religion? MOD: Personally I don't practice any kind of religion but everyone is free to do whatever he wants. Our singer is a Christian but none of these narrowminded ones. The rest of the band feels the same like I do. I read alot about different religions because it helps me to understand other people and why they act in a certain way. I feel that I don't need any religion but I can accept it if other people think so.
AVDR: What are your projects? MOD: At the moment we're working on our second demo "Words unspoken" and it should be released in February 1994. We record it in a 16-track studio and I guess it will turn out much better than the first demo which is sold out now. The new demo contains 3 new songs plus "Mirror of Deception" from the first tape and it has a running time of more than 20 minutes. That's all for the moment! |
