EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the log for the January 12th session, 2003. (8) DM Arkhandus: Alrighty then, to recap the last few sessions in brief, the party entered the Shinomen Forest and rode around cautiously for several hours on horseback, encountering and fighting some bakemonos at one point and then riding to the location where Emperor Toturi and his entourage were ambushed by oni and bakemono, and possibly some ogres or something as well. The party investigated the area briefly, following some tracks around and finding a few different trails. The party, with the help of Aka, a monkey hengeyokai whom they just met, determined that the Shadowlands force came from the south, knowing when and where the Emperor would be, and ambushed him in the Shinomen around a month ago or thereabouts. (8) DM Arkhandus: The party also determined that at least some of the Shadowlands beasts had returned south afterwards, but also knew that some of the oni had continued on northward, and others eastward into Scorpion territory. The party also knows that they've already defeated another group of the Shadowlands creatures that had went northeast, but are otherwise unsure where the others are who had gone north and east. The party decided to follow the eastward tracks, and came to the Chrysanthemum Petal Lake, Mizu-Umi Kiku Hanabira, and they found many tree stumps and some discarded bits of lumber, figuring that the Shadowlands critters, seemingly some bakemono and either an oni or an ogre, had built a raft or somesuch and sailed somewhere along the River Of Gold, Kawa No Kin, though the party is unsure where the Shadowlands beasts went, as the River Of Gold is long and winding, reaching through Scorpion, Crab, and Crane lands, and even reaching slightly into Unicorn lands. We left off after Satoru and others suggested that the party ride northward to the nearby Unicorn Clan village of Turo-Kojiri, where the party could rest and decide which way to go: either northward through Unicorn lands and then turning eastward to reach Otosan Uchi, or back along the northeasterly route they came from, or southeasterly along the River Of Gold or the Scorpion Clan roads. (8) DM Arkhandus: And that is where we are now, at the edge of the Chrysanthemum Petal Lake, deciding whether to head immediately northward to Turo-Kojiri or to rest up first. It is roughly in the middle of the afternoon by your guess. ** (7) Kai Lyn pulls up her horse to pause to see what the others will do ** ** (9) Mai rises in her feline form. hearing the discussion and indecision. Figuring that a Unicorn is less threatening than a poison dripping Scorpion, she and Chaouji leap down from the cart, trotting over towards the north as they both swish their tails patiently ** (8) DM Arkhandus: The sun, Yakamo, is high in the sky but seems to be just starting to inch downward back towards the horizon..... (8) DM Arkhandus: You can barely see the mountains in the distance northward....... (2) Masato: "Well, we have to make a decision as to whether our supplies can sustain a pursuit." ** (5) Kiran looks to see what the rest of the group wants to do then follows their lead ** ** (5) Kiran pets his wolf friend. ** ** (7) Kai Lyn reaches into her saddlebag taking SS out and cuddles with her as they decide ** (6) Korishi: "I don't know how much you packed, but it has been quite a few days since we entered the Shinomen." ** (4) Aka watches as the feline Hengeyoki leap out of the wagon while she eats the banana she was given::Guess some of us are anxious to be on the move. ** (8) DM Arkhandus: Shujo mentions "We will have to decide what to do once we reach Turo-Kojiri. The River Of Gold will carry us swiftly, but it will take us southward for at least a few days, if not a week, before it turns towards Crane lands. Still, it might be the swiftest route back to Otosan Uchi. I will, of course, have to head back to Kyuden Bayushi after we get to Turo-Kojiri, so you may need to hire a heimin boater to guide you down the river." (5) Kiran: "Once we arrive, I will ask Eagle Spirit to guide us in deciding the wisdom of whichever course we decide upon - before we commit to following it." (8) DM Arkhandus: Shujo also notes "We have used up much of the supplies Lord Akodo gave us, but it should be enough for us to return to Otosan Uchi, though we may need to purchase some extra food and drink near the end of our return trip. ** (9) Mai looks to Aka and nods, then turns back to the others grooming one of her paws ** (6) Korishi: "There are advantages to both courses, so any extra help would be useful I'm sure." he says to Kiran. ** (5) Kiran nods to Korishi ** ** (7) Kai Lyn asks "Is there any plus to taking one route over another?" ** (8) DM Arkhandus: Shujo then adds "Then again, as we have acquired several new traveling companions along the way, I suspect our supplies will run out much sooner than originally expected........hmm......" (2) Masato: "Well, we'll have to abandon the wagons and horses most likely if we take the river." ** (7) Kai Lyn shivers "I am not a big fan of river travel." ** (8) DM Arkhandus: Shujo replies to Kai Lyn, "The River may be more swift than riding back on foot, but it as Masato notes, we will have to leave horses and such behind." (6) Korishi: "We should be able to get new horses when we get off the boat, right?" (8) DM Arkhandus: "Though," the Scorpion bushi notes, "Kyuden Miya is nearby, on the other side of the lake, and we could leave horses there to be returned to Otosan Uchi by the Miya family. Surely they will be able to return the horses to Lord Akodo in Otosan Uchi, as their family does much work in Otosan Uchi." (6) Korishi: "That would be a good place to leave them then...." (8) DM Arkhandus: "And we will have little need of the animal handler eta then, so they will be able to bring the horses to Kyuden Miya for us if we give them a proper letter for the Miya to understand....." ** (9) Mai sees them discussing it still and decides to head back to her cart, shimmying her rear a bit before leaping up, nosing her way back under the covers with Chaouji as she lets them decide the matter of the horses ** (8) DM Arkhandus: "Still, we need to determine what to do now. Should we head to Turo-Kojiri now, or tomorrow? And will we take boat or horse to reach Otosan Uchi?" ** (7) Kai Lyn says "I am not at all comfortable with river travel. I haven't been around more than enough water to drink. I am afraid I will perish in that much water." ** (8) DM Arkhandus: Satoru gives his opinion. "I think we should ride now to Turo-Kojiri, rest there, and see about getting a boat to go south along the river. We will be able to avoid Lions that way, although we will still have to get past the crude Crabs instead......" (8) DM Arkhandus: "Though on the river it shouldn't be too difficult at least." Satoru adds. ** (4) Aka lets the samurai talk while she looks through her own pack:: No...nope..nono...::she then stops looking at looks under the covers at Mai::Sorry..no dried fish... ** (5) Kiran: "For my part, I am eager to drink proper tea, and perhaps there will be fresh fish available in town so close to the river. I would enjoy a bath, as well, tonight if we could make it..." (6) Korishi: "While it would be nice to be in comfort, it would not do to stress ourselves to get there. How much further north must we struggle through the forest before it is a clear road? It could easily be well past nightfall before we reach the city if we have to cut through the forest." (5) Kiran: "The teas of the Empire are beyond the wildest imaginings of the mountain Vanara, but I can wait another day" ** (5) Kiran smiles ** (8) DM Arkhandus: Shujo thinks on this for a few minutes, then says "We will not be able to reach the village today. It will take two days of riding, and we will have to ford the Kawa Sano Fui No Dansei Wo Sasu, the River Of The Unexpected Hero, though I think I recall where that can be done." (5) Kiran: "If that is so, Shujo-san, I would like to rest soon." (4) Aka: Any which way is ok for me considering I am the newcomer...::she says still looking in her pack:: (6) Korishi: "I agree with Kiran. Let us rest here on the bank, and ride tomorrow then. The oni have a month's head start on us, it's not like we are chasing them or pressed for time." (2) Masato: "Agreed. The trail is cold. We cannot expect to overtake them." (5) Kiran: "The spirits have given me new knowledge, as well - the power to guide Grandfather's wrath, as well as the Eagle's ability to glimps the future. I would like to pray to them for knowledge of how to use these powers... and that requires rest as well..." (8) DM Arkhandus: Shujo nods. "They may have a month's lead, but doubtless they will have been stopping their raft or boat by shore during the daytime, sailing only at night to avoid detection. That, or they will have been raiding other Scorpion villages along the way, which would also stall them........." He frowns at the thought. (2) Masato: "We'll do what we can Shujo. But we'll need some rest if we're to travel hard." (8) DM Arkhandus: Shujo nods again. (3) Shoko: "So then what's the plan?" (6) Korishi: "Well..' he kicks back a bit in the wagon, "Lets relax today at least, we will move out tomorrow." (8) DM Arkhandus: Satoru thinks on it, then nods to Korishi. "Aye, I suppose we may as well. Riding for a few more hours today wouldn't really make a difference." (2) Masato: "We rest tonight. Tomorrow we ride hard for the village and resupply. From there, I'm favored to keeping our horses and riding hard to catch up with the Oni and Bakemono raiders." (8) DM Arkhandus: Satoru asks Masato to spar with him for a while, as Shujo does some exercising and practice with his katana, and Nerfereti practices her magic and studies some. (6) Korishi: "If the oni and Bakemono took to the river, how will you catch them with horses Masato? (8) DM Arkhandus: The servants set up camp at the party's insistence, and soon the camp is set and a heimin begins cooking an evening meal. ** (7) Kai Lyn lets SS out and begins to prepare for their dinner ** ** (2) Masato sheathes his katana. "The river is subject to tides and is a fixed route. There are shortcuts we can take, and riding hard we can move faster than even the river could take us." ** (4) Aka: Ride you say...::grins::..Guess I can handle a full day in a wagon....::she watches them all prepare camp and yes helps out in the task..:: (6) Korishi: "You would have to leave the wagons behind though, to ride that fast Masato." (8) DM Arkhandus: Shujo raises an eyebrow and looks to Masato. "Oh? And what shortcuts are those, Masato-san? I was not aware you knew anything of my Clan's territory or the surrounding mountains." ** (5) Kiran nudges his wolf companion, and the two go off into the nearby woods to play hide and seek - and give Kiran some practice with his stealth, climbing and jumping skills ** (2) Masato: "Plus I'm counting on the fact that whatever raft they are using is crude and slow. As for the wagons, I am hopeful they will hold. Actually Shujo, I was counting that you might know a few, or that we could find someone who would tell us." ** (9) Mai hops off the cart after giving Aka her last banana, moving among the heimen in feline form, bringing a few fish for the cook so there is some good meat in the bowl. Once dinner is well underway, she shifts to her hybrid form, singing softly in Hengey as she prepares her bed, reading from a silver book from her pack ** (4) Aka: Oh..another banana...good..something to go with the rice...no meat for me though....::she takes the banana:: ** (7) Kai Lyn enjoys her wrestling match with SS after dinner and their squeaks can be heard with joy ** (8) DM Arkhandus: Shujo says "I am afraid I know of only a few routes out of these lands. Since the destruction of Beiden Pass, there really isn't any quick route between Scorpion lands and the Crane, Lion, Phoenix, or Imperial lands......" (8) DM Arkhandus: The party rests, exercises, eats, and so on for a few hours as the afternoon goes by, and soon it is night. ** (9) Mai looks down to Chaouji who watches Kai and SS spar. she motions to them, mreowling in his ear about playing nicely. Meanwhile, Mai looks over to Masato and Shujo ** " Do you know if we might get a better craft than the ones the shadowlands demosn would have used? We might learn mroe if we traveled on the same path they took, but faster" ** ** (6) Korishi meditates as the sun sets, watching the lake as he sits on the bank. ** (4) Aka: ::Aka looks to Mai while she rests, speaking in Hengeyoki::You know...you never told me why you are with these people. (8) DM Arkhandus: Shujo replies to Mai, "Aye, we could certainly get a superior boat if we went to a riverside or lakeside city, and if we traveled north to the Unicorn lands, the River Of The Lost Valley would carry us more swiftly towards Otosan Uchi." (2) Masato: "I'm merely trying to be practical about this Shujo. If you truly think the river is our only chance, then I'll listen." (8) DM Arkhandus: Shujo shrugs. "It is not our only choice, it is merely the fact that travel by boat is swifter than by horse, under the right circumstances. Not significantly faster, but it is in any case, up to you, Satoru, and Shoko, as I will be reporting back to Lord Bayushi before you leave for Otosan Uchi, and the rest here are not samurai." ** (9) Mai nods ** "Then let us do that. I share Kiran's distaste with water travel, but the imortant thing is to find where the bake have fled to and stop them." *She turns to aka and speaks pleasently in Hengey** "I'm with them because it was my Sifu's wish that I not hold to the beliefes of my mother and father, that humans are a plague on the world" ** ** (5) Kiran returns at dinner time ** (8) DM Arkhandus: The party dines on the fish caught by Mai and on the meal prepared by the heimin cook from the party's supplies, and then rests for the night a few hours later. (6) Korishi: ((Korishi hasn't actually traveled a river, but you get the impression he is looking forward to the experience.)) (5) Kiran: "With respect, perhaps the final decision can wait until we have a chance to seek the guidance of the spirits." (2) Masato: "I will take whatever counsel the spirits wish to provide." (4) Aka: ::Aka on the other hand passes on the fish..rather turning instead to her own rations..while continuing her conversations with Mai in Hengeyoki::Well no there not, that is true..but you just happened on such an interesting group...they find the remains of there emporer...must have been the same luck as mine to meet them? ** (6) Korishi sits alone on the rivers edge after dinner. ** ** (9) Mai nods to Kiran as she chomps on the last of her fish, realizing that it's mice and whatever fish she can snatch out of the lake and turns back to Aka nodding ** (hengeyoki) "Yes. But much is prophesied and planned, even in chance" ** (8) DM Arkhandus: The party sleeps for the night, then arises the next morning. They prepare to ride northward again, and eat a short morning meal before leaving, and then the heimin and eta pack up the camp. ** (9) Mai forgoes the morning meal, packing up her share isntead for later in case her mosuing instincts fail her ** (8) DM Arkhandus: The party saddles up, and Shujo says "We will ride northward until we reach the River of the Unexpected Hero, then I will find a good spot to ford the river and we will continue northward. We will likely have to camp again near the river or lake at least once before we reach Turo-Kojiri." (5) Kiran: "As you say, Shujo-san" ** (5) Kiran whistles to his wolf to hop up into his cart ** (6) Korishi: "that sounds good." ** (7) Kai Lyn places SS in her saddle bag and climbs into the saddle too ** ** (9) Mai nods and lays down in the cart, her hand placing her bow next to her ** (4) Aka: ::Aka hops in after Kiran...still remaining her hybrid form from first meeting them and nodding to the other monkeyish person in the party as she settles in:: ** (6) Korishi settles into the other wagon once again. ** ** (5) Kiran mutters quietly, "Saigetsu hito o matazu", with a smile to Aka ** (5) Kiran: (Time and tide wait for no man.) (5) Kiran: (roughly :) ) (8) DM Arkhandus: The party rides on horseback for several hours, along the edges of the lake and the Shinomen Mori, and you reach the river. Shujo then turns the group westward to follow the river a short ways before finding a good spot to ford across, and the party moves on northward once more. The party rides for several more hours before it grows dark, and Shujo picks a spot to camp at. (4) Aka: Hops out of the cart again after another day of travel::I think that cart must have become the official riding cart for all those with or who can have fur. ** (9) Mai looks to the others ** "I'm going to find some meat for tonight. I will be back soon" **She turns and starts towards the river's edge, her bow in hand ** (4) Aka: Why always meat...nobody ever appreciates vegetables..or fruits as a sole diet...::she shakes her head with a whimsical smile:: ** (9) Mai chuckles to Aka's comment ** "Not all of us are sustained by fruit alone" ** (4) Aka: Why do you think I smentioned vegetables too. ** (6) Korishi helps out a bit in camp before again sitting off by himself for a bit. ** (9) Mai: "Try a well cooked bit of fish, or better yet, raw. You may find yourself pleasently surprised." ** (7) Kai Lyn perks up 'Yes raw fish is quite tasty. SS and I both like it that way." ** (4) Aka: No thank you....::looks at Kai Lyn and shakes her head to her as well::And raw sounds so..so much...yuck..::shivers::....probably dosn't tase good. ** (7) Kai Lyn chuckles "You don't know what you are missing its really tasty." ** (4) Aka: Nope...isn't part of my moral standards to do so. ** (9) Mai chuckles and starts towards the river, drawing an arrow from her quiver as she watches the water ** ** (7) Kai Lyn says "You must understand some of us are closer to nature and eating food cooked is unknown to us." ** (4) Aka: I know...I know..same way with me...you ever see normal monkeys eat raw fish? ** (5) Kiran chuckles ** ** (7) Kai Lyn chuckles "No I am not familiar with your people. But I would like to chat with you and learn of you." ** (5) Kiran: "Go ni itte wa go si shitagae" (when in rome...) (4) Aka: What you wanna know? ** (7) Kai Lyn says "What are you like I have been around humans and other hengeyokai like myself but you seem so interesting. So different." ** ** (9) Mai returns a half hour later, six nice sixed fish on a arrow over her shoulder, a regal smile on her face, knowing there isn't a person here tonight who won't enjoy them......and eventually will have to thank her for them. ** ** (6) Korishi stands and rejoins the other as Mai arrives with the food. ** (4) Aka: What..me...diffrent.....how so? ** (7) Kai Lyn goes over to her grateful for the fresh fish "Thank you I do love this treat.." ** (6) Korishi: "Nice catch Mai." ** (9) Mai being the one who got the food in the first place, takes off the largest fish for herself and Chaouji, giving the rest to Kai and Korishi ** "It was easy as these woods see few fishermen. The fish are not so wary around the banks." ** (5) Kiran: "We will eat well tonight - I thank you, Mai" ** (7) Kai Lyn takes whatever she is offered for her and SS grateful for the fish ** (6) Korishi: "Yes, we will. Thanks Mai" (4) Aka: Never thought of myself as different...although maybe a bit strange and silly...but isn't that the way that monkeys are?::wrinkles her nose at the fish::Why didn't nature ever make a fish that was more like a banana..or orange..taste like it too. ** (9) Mai nods to them and looks to Aka with a smirk ** "Why didn't nature ever make a fruit or vegetable that tastes like a fish?" ** (4) Aka: Or cattle made of rice? ** (7) Kai Lyn chuckles "Mother nature knows best giving each its individual flavor." ** ya ** (9) Mai looks to Kai and nods** "exactly" ** (4) Aka: Well guess it would be boring if everything didn't have it's own flavour. (8) DM Arkhandus: The party chats and dines, eventually retiring to their tents and bedrolls. The party sleeps for a few hours before a disturbance...... ** (2) Masato wakes and reaches for his weapons, as he rises to see what is causing the noise. ** (8) DM Arkhandus: As the party sleeps, there is a brief noise, and....... ** (9) Mai flashes her eyes open, her ears directing to the noise as her hand reaches for her bow ** (8) DM Arkhandus: Suddenly, several of the party members feel a sudden burning sensation and spring to wakefulness! (8) DM Arkhandus: First acid flask damage upon Shujo [1d6] -> [6] = (6) and second acid flask damage upon Satoru [1d6] -> [4] = (4) and third acid flask damage upon Kiran [1d6] -> [1] = (1) (8) DM Arkhandus: Several flasks of acid shatter upon Shujo, Satoru, and Kiran, and the three suddenly awake and shout as the gunk burns quickly through their bedrolls and burns at their backs and chests! (5) Kiran: "Ouch!" (8) DM Arkhandus: ((I'm going to assume that each party member slept at least 5 feet away from one another, so no splash damage is inflicted upon any of you)) ** (5) Kiran grasps his crossbow, with a shout - "Up! Up! We are attacked!" ** (8) DM Arkhandus: Several high-pitched shouts are heard, and the group awakens to find several small humanoid creatures attacking you! (8) DM Arkhandus: Initiative, all. ** (6) Korishi scrambles upwards, alarmed. ** (5) Kiran: Initiative: [1d20+2] -> [6,2] = (8) (9) Mai: Combat Rolls: Init: [1d20 + 4] -> [9,4] = (13) Init (2) Masato: Initiative: [1d20+7] -> [14,7] = (21) (4) Aka: init [1d20+4] -> [13,4] = (17) (6) Korishi: init [1d20+3] -> [5,3] = (8) (7) Kai Lyn: Initiative [1d20+3] -> [11,3] vs 0 result of (2) (5) Kiran: Animal companion: [1d20] -> [4] = (4) (8) DM Arkhandus: Satoru Initiative [1d20+7] -> [5,7] = (12) and Shujo Initiative [1d20+1] -> [11,1] = (12) and Nerfereti Initiative [1d20+6] -> [3,6] = (9) (8) DM Arkhandus: Shinjo Kiro Initiative [1d20+2] -> [3,2] = (5) and Shinjo Kari Initiative [1d20+2] -> [19,2] = (21) (8) DM Arkhandus: ************ BEGIN COMBAT *********** (8) DM Arkhandus: *************** FIRST ROUND *********** (8) DM Arkhandus: ((BTW, anyone with Knowledge-shadowlands, knowledge-arcana, or knowledge-nature may make such a skill check, whichever they have the highest bonus with, to identify the critters)) (5) Kiran: Knowledge (Arcana): [1d20+3+6] -> [3,3,6] = (12) (8) DM Arkhandus: Nerfereti knowledge-arcana check [1d20+8] -> [2,8] = (10) (2) Masato: Knowledge (Shadowlands): [1d20+5] -> [17,5] = (22) (9) Mai: Skill Roll: Knowledge(arcana) check: [1d20.dc((?),5)] -> [11,5] = (16) vs DC 0 Success! (8) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi unexpectedly doesn't attack with the club he holds two-handed, but instead begins chanting! He tries to cast a spell upon the party......... (8) DM Arkhandus: Shujo, Masato, Kai Lyn, Kai Lyn's familiar Silver Streak, Kiran, Kiran's wolf, Nerfereti, and Satoru are all caught in the spell's effect, as tendrils of silvery thread sprout from the tasloi's outstretched left hand and begin to cover the party in an intricate web! Neyhaeha!" (8) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi then resumes his two-handed grasp of his club, and laughs some more. (8) DM Arkhandus: *********** SECOND TASLOI ********* (8) DM Arkhandus: Another tasloi laughs as it sees Lurnak's spell cover several of the party and he hurls his small spear at Kiran, seeing that the monkey-like Vanara escaped the sticky threads.
