EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the log for the January 19th session.

(1) DM Arkhandus: Okay, recapping the previous session, the party was at the edge of the Mizu-Umi Kiku Hanabira, the Chrysanthemum Petal Lake, discussing what to do after they had followed the tracks of many bakemonos and an oni or ogre to the lakeside. Several trees there were chopped down and much lumber refuse remained, as the bakemonos and their leader built some sort of raft and sailed across the lake and the River Of Gold, Kawa No Kin. The party decided that they wouldn't be able to catch up to the creatures, who presumably had something like a one or two week lead, though the party surmised that the Shadowlands creatures would be slowed by a poorly and hastily constructed raft, as well as by any Rokugani who see them upon the river and attack them. The party also guessed that they would travel only at night to minimize such attacks, or would be raiding lakeside villages in the meantime, which would also slow them.
(1) DM Arkhandus: So the party decided to head northward to the Unicorn Clan village of Turo-Kojiri, where they could commission a boat to chase after the Shadowlands villains down the river, or to at least resupply and decide upon a swift road to take back to Otosan Uchi by horseback.
(1) DM Arkhandus: Along the way northward, as the party rode around the lake and the river, fording at a shallow part of the river and continuing northward, night came upon them and they decided to make camp for the night, requiring one more day to reach Turo-Kojiri. However, a few hours after the party fell asleep, they were awakened with a start as several party members awoke and shouted with pain, acid splattering upon their backs and scalding them! The party awoke quickly after that noise, and found themselves surrounded by a tasloi hunting party trying to make them into a meal!
(1) DM Arkhandus: Shujo, Satoru, and Kiran were all splattered with flasks of acid as they slept, and when they awoke, the party rose to arms to defend themselves. Almost immediately afterward, one of the tasloi cast a spell that would cover Masato, Kiran, Kiran's wolf, Kai Lyn, her weasel familiar, Nerfereti, Satoru, and Shujo in sticky webs like a spider, but Kiran, the wolf, and Masato managed to roll out of the way of the falling strands of sticky webbing.
(1) DM Arkhandus: After that, another tasloi hurled a small spear at Kiran but missed, and Masato rose, drew his katana, and attacked that tasloi, unfortunately missing as well.
(1) DM Arkhandus: And now, we continue the battle.......
(1) DM Arkhandus: ((also, as a note, you will have to remember that it is night and so visibility is low. The moon and stars shine brightly tonight, but only a few of the party members will find this any help. Also, just because you folks have probably forgotten by now, recall that there are several potions and salves of healing amongst the gear the servants have been carrying for you.))

(1) DM Arkhandus: The Unicorn samurai-ko rises and draws her katana, looking about to see what is going on. She scans the area and tries to assess the situation, taking up a defensive stance for now.

(8) Aka: ::Aka awakes with a start..seeing one of the beasties upon awaekening and the sound of battle in her ears..she clambers to her feat...her voice speaking a spell as she grabs for the components to make her skin more protective...((spell, scales of the lizard))
(1) DM Arkhandus: ((also, as another note, recall that the tasloi are encircling the party, each roughly 20 feet away from a PC, close enough for them to use their acid flasks and halfspears accurately. There are six tasloi, one 20 feet from Kiran and adjacent to Masato after his move and attack, a second 20 feet from Korishi, a third 20 feet from Kai Lyn, a fourth 20 feet from Shoko, a fifth 20 feet from Mai, and the spellcasting tasloi is 20 feet from Shujo.))
(1) DM Arkhandus: ((okay Aka, your skin sprouts numerous scales upon it, making you more resistant to attack))

(1) DM Arkhandus: ((as a note Shoko, if you want to waste time mounting up, yer horse is going to be about 30 feet away at the edge of camp, with the rest of the animals and heimin.))

(1) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi near Korishi grasps his battleaxe in both hands and charges at the young monk, shouting out a battlecry in the tasloi language, and rage fills his eyes as he moves in to attack.
** (6) Korishi sets himself quickly. **
(6) Korishi: "What are these things doing here?"
(1) DM Arkhandus: Third tasloi raging battleaxe attack [1d20+4] -> [8,4] = (12) and damage [1d8+4] -> [8,4] = (12)
(11) Shoko: "Ambushing us, what does it look like?"
(1) DM Arkhandus: Luckily for the young monk, in the tasloi's self-invoked rage, it swings too far to the left and the monk dodges.
(1) DM Arkhandus: ****************** FOURTH TASLOI ****************
(6) Korishi: "I thought we were too far from the shadowlands for them to normally come..."
(11) Shoko: "Why don't you ask them why they are here, I'm in the middle of negotiating a "piece" settlement with them?"
(1) DM Arkhandus: Meanwhile, the tasloi nearest Kai Lyn hurls a halfspear at the hengeyokai magic-user, then draws another halfspear.

(1) DM Arkhandus: Luckily again, the tasloi misses, and it curses in its savage language.

(1) DM Arkhandus: Mai fires at the tasloi nearest her, but misses...... It seems to you all that the Fortunes seem to favor no one in this battle at all.......

(1) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi nearest Shoko throws a halfspear at her, then draws another.

(1) DM Arkhandus: Again, a missed shot.

(1) DM Arkhandus: The Daidoji samurai struggles to move through the sticky strands of webbing that have caught him, and the tasloi spellcaster Lurnak laughs again at the sight.

(1) DM Arkhandus: However, the samurai realizes that he is stuck, spending the entire round struggling futilely to free himself.

(1) DM Arkhandus: The Scorpion samurai also tries to free himself, realizing that he is of no use in this battle if he cannot free himself from the accursed webs.

(1) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi nearest Mai tries to throw a halfspear at her as well, as its companions have been trying to do to the other humans.

(1) DM Arkhandus: Luckily, he too misses.

(1) DM Arkhandus: The Phoenix Clan sorceress attempts to use her magics against the tasloi near Shoko.
(1) DM Arkhandus: Tasloi Will save [1d20+0] -> [3,0] = (3)
(1) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi near Shoko suddenly pauses as it waves its small spear menacingly at Shoko, and looks at Nerfereti. The sorceress shouts out "My friend! Please stop your fellows from hurting us! They must be under some sort of magic to be attacking us, your friends!"
(1) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi, strangely, complies and starts shouting at its fellows in the tasloi language, waving its spear at them. The sorceress smiles slyly.
** (6) Korishi raises an eyebrow at Nerfereti. **
(1) DM Arkhandus: ******************** KORISHI ************
** (6) Korishi begins pummelling the tasloi that attacked him, striking with a double punch. [1d20-3] -> [10,-3] = (7) [1d20-3] -> [11,-3] = (8) **
(1) DM Arkhandus: The furious tasloi deflects korishi's blows, and snarls at him as it prepares to swing its worn battleaxe at him again.
(1) DM Arkhandus: ************** KIRAN ***************
(1) DM Arkhandus: The Vanara tries to think of something helpful to do, and he begins casting a spell.
(6) Korishi: ":Dang...."
(1) DM Arkhandus: Kiran chants and points at Satoru, and the Crane samurai's muscles bulge a little noticeably beneath his kimono.

(1) DM Arkhandus: Satoru glances at himself, then at Kiran, and nods to the Vanara as he continues trying to struggle free of the webs with his empowered strength.

(1) DM Arkhandus: The Unicorn samurai looks about, glancing at Kari, who nods to him for some reason, and he draws his katana.
(1) DM Arkhandus: He looks around at his enemies and picks a target, preparing himself to attack in a few moments.
(1) DM Arkhandus: ************** KIRAN'S WOLF ************
(1) DM Arkhandus: The wolf, at Kiran's quick command, attempts to dash towards the spellcasting tasloi, but it struggles to leap past each strand of webbing between them.
(1) DM Arkhandus: Wolf strength check [1d20+1] -> [19,1] = (20)
(1) DM Arkhandus: The wolf manages to leap a few times and close half the distance between itself and the spellcasting tasloi.

(1) DM Arkhandus: The spellcasting tasloi, Lurnak, growls out a spell and glares at Masato, shouting "Flee with terror, ugly human!"

(1) DM Arkhandus: Masato shudders briefly, but shrugs off the feeling and just glares back at the tasloi briefly before turning his gaze back to the tasloi before him.

(1) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi before Masato curses in the tasloi tongue at the failure of Lurnak's spell, and hacks at Masato with a handaxe.
(1) DM Arkhandus: Axe [1d20+4] -> [13,4] = (17) and damage [1d4+1] -> [4,1] = (5)
(1) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi manages to take advantage of Masato's brief distraction at Lurnak's spell, and manages to make a gash in Masato's belly before the samurai can retaliate or dodge.

** (4) Masato grits his teeth as he retaliates with a swipe from his katana. **

(1) DM Arkhandus: Masato swipes at the little axe-wielding tasloi, and the creature actually manages to nearly dodge it, but fails and the katana digs into its cord armor and past its small shield, making the creature shriek with pain as it's shieldarm shoulder is maimed.
(1) DM Arkhandus: Amazingly however, it manages to stay standing, gritting its teeth and cursing at the samurai.
(1) DM Arkhandus: **************** SHINJO KARI **************
(1) DM Arkhandus: The Unicorn samurai-ko grimaces, then decides on a course of action. She glances briefly at her brother Kiro, then moves in upon Shoko, grinning ferally and lashing out at her with a Katana!

(1) DM Arkhandus: Luckily, despite Kari's devastating and unexpected attack, Shoko hears footsteps behind her and jukes to the right just in time to avoid a mortal injury.

(8) Aka: ::With her spell completed and the skin under her fur a mishmash of small amber reptilian scales, Aka reaches down under her pack beside her and swings back up with a laoded crossbow, aiming for the Tasloi tossing spears at Mai and a snap of string, fires::((attack [1d20+2] -> [5,2] = (7)
(1) DM Arkhandus: Kari curses at failing to slay Shoko, and Kiro glances at her, hissing......
(1) DM Arkhandus: Unfortunately, Aka's crossbow shot misses the tasloi near Mai.

** (11) Shoko looks at the cut she just recieved from Kari and then looks Kari, "Why?" **
(1) DM Arkhandus: Kari just sneers at Shoko and hisses like a snake.......
(6) Korishi: "Betraying us?" he glances towards Kari and Kiro.

(1) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi in front of Korishi attempts again to eviscerate the young monk, now frothing at the mouth (or is it drooling?) as it swings the axe at Korishi.....

(1) DM Arkhandus: Lucky again, Korishi evades the tasloi's attack.
(6) Korishi: "Too slow." he says as he slips aside.

(1) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi nearest Kai Lyn now attacks with another thrown halfspear.....

(1) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi manages to hurl its halfspear accurately this time, its halfspear imbedding itself slightly in Kai Lyn's ribs, seemingly stricken a bone though and not driving deep.

** (13) Mai, seeing the tide of mattle turning into a tsunami, decides to protect herself first and foremost, drawing a large oval before her that shimmers like water ((casting Shield in front of me, upping my AC to 21)) **

(1) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi nearest Shoko, charmed by Nerfereti's spell, growls as it sees its allies still attacking, and it tries to move in and attack Kari, the nearest foe as far as it can tell, realizing that it can't free Nerfereti from the webs yet.

(1) DM Arkhandus: Unfortunately, while the little creature stabs at Kari and strikes, her armor absorbs the blow.

(1) DM Arkhandus: The Scorpion samurai attempts the same thing, cursing whatever must have put tasloi on this world as he tries to free himself.

(1) DM Arkhandus: He grunts in triumph as he tears the webs off of himself and tosses them aside.

(1) DM Arkhandus: Meanwhile, the tasloi near Mai draws out another halfspear, but after seeing Mai do some kind of spellcasting like what it had seen Lurnak use before, chooses a new target after its attacks were already missing when she didn't use magic. instead, it hurls a halfspear at Shoko, not seeing anyone else reasonably close.

(1) DM Arkhandus: The sorceress, after seeing the success of her previous spell, decides to cast another one. She focuses her sight upon the tasloi near Kai Lyn, and casts.

(1) DM Arkhandus: Yet another tasloi succumbs to Nerfereti's spell, and she shouts "Please, my tasloi friend, help us! Your friends are trying to kill me and my friends! Please don't let them!"
(1) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi turns from facing Kai Lyn to facing Lurnak, and starts shouting at Lurnak ineffectively.
(1) DM Arkhandus: ************ KORISHI ***********
** (6) Korishi retaliates on his attacker, spining with a roundhouse kick and following with a straight Stunning punch. 1st attack [1d20-3] -> [18,-3] = (15) 2nd attack - stunning attack [1d20-3] -> [6,-3] = (3) **
(1) DM Arkhandus: Korishi manages to strike the raging tasloi in front of him once, but his second strike is deflected.

(1) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi just grunts as Korishi punches it, and it continues its assault.

(6) Korishi: "gonna have to try harder..."

(1) DM Arkhandus: Kiran frowns at how the battle is turning out, and decides to try and encourage his allies under the circumstances. He chants and invokes his grandfather's spirit to bless the party.

(1) DM Arkhandus: Kiro turns to look at Masato and charges the samurai with his katana.

(1) DM Arkhandus: The wolf bounds the rest of the way through the webbing, leaping out onto the ground before Lurnak! it prepares to snap at Lurnak......

(1) DM Arkhandus: Kai Lyn attempts to cast a spell to smite Lurnak, struggling with the webs to cast it.

(1) DM Arkhandus: He spell strikes Lurnak lightly with a small mystic bolt, but nothing more.

(1) DM Arkhandus: Lurnak steps forward and strikes at the wolf before him with his club.

(1) DM Arkhandus: Lurnak fails to strike the wolf with his attack, and snarls.

(1) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi fighting Masato grimaces and makes a quick decision, taking a quick 5-foot step and then pulling a small cask from his belt, uncorking it and quickly quaffing it.......

(1) DM Arkhandus: Masato stares in shock as the tasloi steps away and gulps down something, and the wound Masato just dealt it heals almost completely to just a scratch!

(1) DM Arkhandus: ((btw, the tasloi had to drop its shield to quaff the potion))
** (14) Masato slashes Kiro. **

(1) DM Arkhandus: Kari hisses at Shoko once more, deciding on a different tactic. Her neck suddenly extends outward as she snaps out to bite at Shoko!

(17) Korishi: "If anyone has been holding back...now might be a good time to throw out everything you've got......."

(1) DM Arkhandus: The tasloi that had been hurling halfspears at Kai Lyn now dashes at Lurnak for not ceasing the attack, and strikes at its leader wtih a halfspear.

(1) DM Arkhandus: Mai's arrow passes by Lurnak's arm, but fails to strike.
(1) DM Arkhandus: The first tasloi to be charmed by Nerfereti's magicks now attempts again to stab Kari with its halfspear.

(1) DM Arkhandus: Amazingly, the tasloi enchanted by Nerfereti charges in and delivers a viscious jab to Lurnak with his halfspear! Lurnak staggers and gawks at his rebelling warrior.

(1) DM Arkhandus: The Crane samurai tries again to burst free from his bonds.......

(1) DM Arkhandus: Unfortunately, the supernaturally strong threads barely resist snapping under Satoru's enhanced strength.........

(1) DM Arkhandus: Servants gather some gear from the fallen foes at Shujo's insistance, and Shujo tells the party that the tasloi seemed to have a few potions or something, so he tells the servants to keep them until the party can get them identified.
