| EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the log for the February 2nd, 2003 session. (1) DM Arkhandus: Alright then, to recap last session, the party entered Turo-Kojiri, a Unicorn Clan village on the edge of Unicorn and Scorpion territory, just north of the Shinomen Mori. The party sought out some information, rest, and supplies within the village, and discussed their findings at a teahouse as they supped. Nerfereti purchased supplies to last the group a while longer once their remaining supplies run out, and Shujo talked wtih heimin fishermen and sailors to learn the feasability of river travel to reach Otosan Uchi once more. Ultimately, the group decided that land travel would be simpler and only marginally slower at this point, so in the morning the party prepared to set forth again northward and then east. Beforehand however, some of the party members were healed of their recent wounds by Kiran and a young priest in the village. Now it is morning, and the party prepares to set out again. ** (3) Korishi gathers himself and heads downstairs to join the others. ** ** (6) Mai scampers out of the hotel in her fully feline form with Chaouji as they both leap up onto the carts, waiting for the others ** ** (3) Korishi walks outside, streaching a bit and walking around the carts while the others are getting loaded up. ** (1) DM Arkhandus: In the morning, Shujo asks the party "Well, will you take the route northwest around the mountains, or head back through the pass we came through to reach my Clan's lands? This is where I will have to leave you, but if you return to the pass we came here through, I will stay with you until there." ** (9) Kai Lyn packs up her meager belongings feeds the both of them then gently settles SS in her saddlebag and prepares for the journey ** (3) Korishi: "I have no problem with mountains, but I don't think it's up to me." (5) Aka: ::Gets ready for another fun filled day in the cart, her bpackhorse still pulled along behind it:: (1) DM Arkhandus: Shujo awaits a reply. (5) Aka: "Lets go through the same pass..ok I am a new one here and did not go through the pass once but safer to backtrack then to take a different direction entirely just for scenery." ** (9) Kai Lyn climbs into the saddle "I am ready when everyone else is." ** (3) Korishi: "Well, how difficult is the mountain path?" (11) Masato: "The pass is probably the quicker route." (3) Korishi: "What threats are on the pass?" (1) DM Arkhandus: Shujo says "Who knows? Last time we entered it, we met Shoko and fought off a vile humanoid creature called a buso........." (3) Korishi: "Well, what do we know about the mountain and it's threats?" (1) DM Arkhandus: "The mountains are not quite as safe as the path through Unicorn lands, but it would likely be swifter to a minor degree......." (1) DM Arkhandus: "Masato, are you and the others willing to risk the mountain pass again? You were poisoned or somesuch last time......but I haven't heard much about such creatures before, so I doubt they're common in the mountains......" (3) Korishi: "Well, if what I commented on yesterday is true, swifter would be better." (11) Masato: "It makes little difference to me. So long as the wagon can handle the terrain, we should take whichever path is quicker." (3) Korishi: "Thats what I'm thinking." (1) DM Arkhandus: Shujo nods. "Then I shall accompany you to the pass, then return to my daimyo and report. Please give my regards to Lord Akodo, and my regrets that I must report to Lord Bayushi first. I have already performed my primary function in this endeavor, so I hope and believe that Lord Akodo will understand." ** (3) Korishi heads for the wagons to get on, looking over towards the other wagon, "Everyone loaded?" ** (11) Masato: "The report will be made to Lord Akodo. Who gives the report is of no consequence." (5) Aka: "I'm loaded...got enough fruit to last me." (1) DM Arkhandus: Shujo and the others mount up and the servants look ready. ** (11) Masato urges his horse forward. ** ** (3) Korishi gets in the wagon as well. ** (3) Korishi: "Lets go." ** (6) Mai settles down as the wagons begin to move out, washing her fur gently* ** ** (9) Kai Lyn takes SS out of the saddlebag and drapes her around her shoulders. Perhaps she won't complain as much at night ** ** (3) Korishi settles into a meditation during the travel, the bouncy wagon being a good chance to train on centering his concentration. ** (1) DM Arkhandus: The party sets out, riding east along the road, Shujo leading. The party travels uneventfully for several days, riding to Shiro Iuchi and past, taking two days to get that far, at which point Shujo halts the party for a brief question. (1) DM Arkhandus: "We have two choices at this point," the Scorpion says, "we can cut through the hills ahead to save time, or follow the road south and past Kyuden Miya and Kyuden Bayushi, before heading northward again, as that is where the road leads. The hills will be faster, but I wished to ask first." (3) Korishi: "I think speed is best, I say the hills." ** (9) Kai Lyn asks "What are the advantages and disadvantages of both paths? Which is the safest path?" ** (11) Masato: "The hills, if the path is smooth enough for the wagon." (1) DM Arkhandus: "Safest is the road, of course, but going through the hills will save us roughly half a week. There are no paths, but there is enough clear ground for the wagons." (5) Aka: ::Lays in the back of the wagon::"All hills are is places that go up and down...why not go hills. (3) Korishi: "I see no reason not to go hills..." (9) Kai Lyn: "You haven't mentioned the dangers of the hills though?" (1) DM Arkhandus: Shujo nods, and says "Then let us camp here tonight, and we will head through the hills tomorrow. We should reach Pokau village again in another three days I think, then the pass in another day." (3) Korishi: "Probably more chance of encountering something hostile Kai, but then, the roads could easily have someone waiting to attack also." (3) Korishi: "I doubt anyone plans on people heading through the hills." (5) Aka: "Lets make sure someone stays up or stay up in shifts this night..no little creatures to interrupt us. I call dibs on NOT doing it..I already did that last time." (1) DM Arkhandus: "Some creatures live in the hills, yes, but I am unsure what. The only places near enough for any creatures of the hills to harass Rokugani is Shiro Iuchi behind us, Pokau village to the northeast, and Ryoko Owari to the east. Only Pokau is really vulnerable to them, but I haven't heard of any such attacks. Only attacks on travelers passing through the hills, and not very often." ** (9) Kai Lyn says "I can see well at night I will be happy to stand a watch. Being small has its advantages." ** (1) DM Arkhandus: "Whatever creatures live in the hills cannot be particularly numerous or dangerous." (3) Korishi: "If you don't mind Kai. I'm rather blind sight-wise once the sun goes down." ** (9) Kai Lyn says "I would be happy to watch, where would you prefer me to stand?" ** ** (3) Korishi nods. ** (3) Korishi: "The middle would probably be best if you think your sight can handle it." (11) Masato: "I'll take first watch." (1) DM Arkhandus: The party rests for the night, and encounters no dangers. In the morning, the party sets out again, and travels slowly as Shujo finds smooth ground for the wagons to ride over. The occasional strange sound is heard at night and in the day, but no creatures seem to make themselves apparent. ** (9) Kai Lyn says "I will stand that please some awaken me at the right time." ** (1) DM Arkhandus: The party reaches near the edges of the hills by the next evening, and Shujo finds a suitable camping spot. The party rests for another night, and luckily, no dangers are encountered again. The party again sets out slowly in the morning and exits the hills after a few hours. (3) Korishi: "Well, that was benign enough." (5) Aka: ::keeps riding in the wagon..almost lounging herself...::"Any chance we go near any elven lands..like elven folk...some of them live in trees ya know." (1) DM Arkhandus: The party rides northward for much of the day, and reaches Pokau village in the early evening. Heimin finish up their daily work and set about cleaning up and putting tools and such away. (6) Mai: "Why would you want to bother the Spirit folk?' (1) DM Arkhandus: Shujo replies "The nearest elven settlements are further to the east and to the south of here. We have not passed near any of them so far, given our fairly direct routes." (5) Aka: "Not bother them no...I would never be a bother..fit in more like it considering they live in trees...I can live in a tree....as a monkey....close enough...sort of..ah well...maybe some day." ** (3) Korishi climbs out of the wagon as they get to town, walking in with the others. ** (1) DM Arkhandus: The party files into Pokau once again, and set about finding teahouses, bath houses, and shops. Shujo speaks with some of the locals, and the heimin take the horses and carts to a stable while the party goes about their business. ** (6) Mai lifts Chaouji out of the cart, setting him on her shoulder as she walks the town, enjoying the quiet sights and sounds. ** ** (9) Kai Lyn places SS around her shoulders and walks in following the others ** (1) DM Arkhandus: The party rests, relaxes, and dines in Pokau this evening, and then spends the night at an inn. In the morning, the party prepares to head back to the pass a little further north. ** (3) Korishi tries to find a good place to meditate for a while, his interpretation of the last dream worrying him further as they get closer to the capitol. ** (1) DM Arkhandus: Before the party leaves in the morning, Aka, Kai Lyn, and Mai explore Pokau a little and buy some more fruits and such, then the party prepares to leave. (1) DM Arkhandus: Then the party heads northward to the Minami Toge, the Southern Pass, and Shujo converses briefly with the guards. They agree to let the party pass, and Shujo waves the group onward. (1) DM Arkhandus: The Scorpion samurai bows to the party and wishes them well. (3) Korishi: "What were the guards for?" (11) Masato: "Farewell Shujo." (1) DM Arkhandus: Shujo says "The Scorpion control this end of the pass to protect it from any Lions or others who might wish to invade......we have learned from the ruin of Beiden Pass........" (1) DM Arkhandus: "With Emperor Toturi's demise, it is quite likely the Clans could fall to war once again, so security is of great importance to my people again....." ** (9) Kai Lyn listens to their explanations and the chttering between her and SS plus an occasional chuckle gives you the idea of their opinion ** (3) Korishi: "It confuses me why the clans fight each other when they should all serve the same purpose." (1) DM Arkhandus: Shujo bows once more as the party rides into the pass, heading along the mountain path on their way to the Unicorn lands in the north, and the roads leading back east to Otosan Uchi. (1) DM Arkhandus: "I am afraid you simply cannot understand, monk, living in isolation from the Clans..." Shujo says irritably. ** (3) Korishi sighs, "perhaps not. Clan relations do seem confusing to me." ** ** (6) Mai shakes her head, letting the conversationw wash around her as she listens ** (1) DM Arkhandus: "Aye, as they should. Only courtiers and daimyos can understand it, so do not deign to try." the Scorpion says a little less irritably. ** (3) Korishi shakes his head, "Confusing though it may be, it is still best to try to learn and understand what you encounter. ** ** (9) Kai Lyn nods in agreement and SS's chuckle of agreement can be heard plainly ** (5) Aka: "You know...they name some clans after animals that are also Hengeyoki, so if Hengeyoki form clans..would they name them after people?" ** (9) Kai Lyn chuckles "No I know my people wouldn't we respect our human friends and love our independence too much." ** (1) DM Arkhandus: As the party finally enters the pass and heads northward through it, Shujo turns and leaves to return to Kyuden Bayushi. ** (6) Mai smirks at that ** (Hengey) "Kai. Don't tease the humans. Many of them need their structured lives" ** ** (9) Kai Lyn says "Farewell Shujo I enjoyed your company." ** (3) Korishi: "Until we meet again Shujo." ** (9) Kai Lyn answers (Hengey) "You are right their lives suit them but will never suit us." ** ** (11) Masato offers no explanation, knowing that he serves something that the others would not understand. ** (5) Aka: (Hengi))"Well just an interesting thought...I mean...if monkey Hengiyoki ever made a clan they can't call it Monkey Clan cause theres already a clan named Monkey." ** (6) Mai nods to Shujo as he parts, letting him go with that as he left them ** (1) DM Arkhandus: The party travels for a time through the pass, and at one point finds the remains of the destroyed caravan that they had found last time in the pass. It looks like the guards had sent in heimin and eta from Pokau to remove most of the remaining pieces of broken carts and such, and the corpses and such are gone, including the corpse of the buso. (1) DM Arkhandus: The party travels for two days through the pass uneventfully, making slow but steady progress through the rough pass. Based on their previous trek through the pass, the party figures that they will need another week or so to exit the pass and reach Toshi No Aida Ni Kawa or Shiranai, in the Unicorn lands. (5) Aka: ::Hopes her bananas hold for a week, thinking she'll have to..as she gasps to herself in supprise...ration them out:: (1) DM Arkhandus: The party sleeps, and the next day they continue onward. However, as the party rides past a patch of mountian scrub bushes and such, they hear something strange. ** (3) Korishi perks his ears from his meditation, and crawls to the back of the wagon to peek outside. ** ** (6) Mai looks up, reaching for her bow as she turns towards the strange sounds. whispering quietly to Chaouji ** (5) Aka: ::Aka opens her eyes she was keeping closed to relax..sseeing Mai go for her bow she slowly reaches for her onwn crossbow::What's that noise? (1) DM Arkhandus: Suddenly, three strange creatures appear before you and strike out! Each is roughly man-sized, and looks like a dark-furred lion with a human-like face, and colorfully-feathered wings...... One appears next to Satoru and strikes at him with with teeth and claws, while another appears beside Masato and likewise attacks, and the third shimmers into existence in front of Shoko, striking at her with teeth and claws! It bounds forward once and attacks Satoru again. She guides her hands in front of her as she speaks in a clear voice ** "This fight is not needed honorable Dragon. I ask you to stay your hand" ** (1) DM Arkhandus: ((Mai is in the 3rd rank of PCs, behind Kai Lyn, who is behind Masato. It is 20 feet to get within melee range, with the creature in front of Masato 25 feet away)) (6) Mai: ((I'll take the one hitting Shoko for now)) (6) Mai: ((Charm Person then.)) (1) DM Arkhandus: Mai speaks to the creatures, and then casts a spell upon the one before Shoko........to no effect. I can't do anything to these things...." (1) DM Arkhandus: ((recall Kai Lyn that you are in the second rank, behind masato, with 15 feet between you and the critter in front of him.)) ** (9) Kai Lyn concentrates on the creature attacking Satoru and sends a magic missile its way [1d4+1] -> [1,1] = (2) ** (1) DM Arkhandus: Kai Lyn's magical bolt strikes the creature before Satoru and Korishi, and seems to slightly wound it. Strangely, the creature's form melts and oozes, turning wispy and ghostly.......and it changes into the form of a bush...... (13) Korishi: "What the heck?" (1) DM Arkhandus: ************** NERFERETI ******** (1) DM Arkhandus: The Phoenix Clan sorceress gasps and stares briefly at the bush, then regains her senses and draws her crossbow, firing at the creature before Shoko. (13) Korishi: "Someone tell me what that means?" (1) DM Arkhandus: Nerfereti's crossbow shot goes too high unfortunately, as she tries too hard not to hit Shoko....... (6) Mai: "I thought so. It's some kind of illusion. Those are not the Li Lung!!" (1) DM Arkhandus: *************** THIRD CREATURE ******** (5) Aka: "Or they're deadly evil shrubbery that change shape?" (1) DM Arkhandus: The winged, man-faced leonine creature before Shoko snarls at seeing its companion fall, and hops 5 feet to the side to get within reach of Masato, striking at the samurai with tooth and claw. (6) Mai: "Dragons. These thigns are not them!!" (1) DM Arkhandus: The creature snaps at Masato, biting deeply into the samurai's arm, but misses with its claws. (1) DM Arkhandus: ((5 damage from the bite)) (1) DM Arkhandus: ************** KIRAN ********** (1) DM Arkhandus: Kiran gapes, but recovers and moves up just behind Masato and invokes his grandfather's blessing to heal Masato.
