The Federation is in the middle of a war with the Dominion, led by a race of shapeshifters known as the Founders. It is unlikely that the Federation will survive. Captain Sisko led an attack on Cardassia itself to strike a blow for Starfleet, but while he was away from DS9, Gul Dukat, possessed by the Bajoran spirit of a Pah-Wraith, beamed on board the station, killed Jadzia Dax and released the alien entity into the wormhole, causing it to close, apparently permanently. Although the Dax symbiont survived, Jadzia died of her injuries, leaving Worf without a wife. Sisko, upset by this loss, and for not doing his duty as the Bajoran Emissary, left DS9 and went home to Earth to figure out what to do next. Meanwhile, he works at his father's restaurant.
