Three girls trying to get a prom date by witchcraft believe they’ve summoned up a man, but an explosion in a hotel leads them to another conclusion. The explosion is reason enough for a backstep, so Frank must stop the explosion happening again, and he needs the girls’ help.

A mixture of good and bad, this episode at least comes out on the good side. The witches come straight out of The Craft, but thankfully they turn out to not have any real powers (possibly), which makes the whole thing more believable. They make good if one-track characters, present as they are mainly to exclaim how gorgeous Parker is. The way they fit in is quite clever, and although their reaction to a man being shot dead is unlikely, they do have an important and fun role to fill.

The whole Ramsey sub-plot is totally unexpected and all the better for it; it’s something of a shame that Frank beats him to Olga through time travel, if only because it humanizes the character a lot more than has previously been the case. Once Olga is out in the field, however, she is allowed nowhere near enough screen time before she is incapacitated. It’s a shame, as the writers are refusing to play to the series’ strengths.

The only major objection I have is the depiction of Irish people and the IRA in the story. The IRA are a lot cleverer than this episode suggests and do have a tendency to only bomb places in Ireland. What’s most painful, however, is the horribly intentional Irish names and the fact that the meeting takes place at the Shamrock Hotel. Dreadfully inept and probably someone thinking they were being clever. Still, at least we’re spared dodgy Irish accents.

Once again, there’s enough action and fun to keep most viewers happy, but there’s not been much thought put into this.
