Chapter 7

The blue-haired ferry girl hurried down the hallway. What does Koenma-sama want with me now? she thought, annoyed. But in a way, too, she felt glad for an excuse to see him again. She blushed, thinking of that, but she then shook her head.

“Silly girl,” she said quietly to herself. He’s the Reikai prince while I am just a ferrygirl…

She knocked on his door, and announced, “Koenma-sama? It’s me, Botan.”

“Come in, Botan.”

She opened the door, and let herself in. “What is it, Koenma-sama?”

“There has been news of an attack in the Ningen Kai. Her name is Mishina, once the member of a notorious group of thieves in the Ma Kai, and--”

Botan felt fairly surprised when she saw Koenma in his teenaged form. She couldn’t help but note that he was remarkably good-looking, what with his fine, brown hair and those hazel eyes of his…

“Botan? Have you been listening to anything I just said?”

Botan started. Snap out of it! she mentally ordered herself. “Uh,yeah.”

“Good.” Koenma handed her some papers. “Here is a list of all the information we have gathered about her and her former partners so far.”

“Hmmm...Botan said, scanning the paper. "A group of seven thieves once feared for their extraordinary abilities…”

She started to read some more, when a name caught her eye. "Kurama!" she exclaimed. “One of the people in her original group of thieves was a fire demon by the name of Naomi, who was once a close friend of a youko named Kurama!”

“Yes,” Koenma said, nodding. “I don't know what happened to Mishina’s group, but one way or the other, they broke up. This Naomi must have fled to the Ningen Kai since she's not on the death list, although I received word that she already died in the Ma Kai.”

“Just like Kurama's case,” Botan said thoughtfully.

“Yes, and perhaps Kurama may know something about Naomi's whereabouts,” Koenma said. “We have question him. Let us go to the Ningen Kai now.”

Botan started to go out the door , when Saotome George came running into the office. “Koenma-sama! Koenma-sam—” he shouted, and tripped on the table, throwing Koenma's papers in a disarray.

Koenma punched him on the head furiously. “Now look at what you've done!” he yelled. “Why don't you watch where you're going, IDIOT!!!!”

“Gomen, gomen, Koenma-sama!” George said apologetically. “I just have some terrible news. Please look at your TV screen.”

“What?!?!” Koenma said. He started looking for the remote, but it was nowhere to be found. “Where is that remote?!?!?!?!?!

Botan got it from under the pile of papers, and turned the TV on. It showed Yusuke firing his rei gun at Yukina. It hit the poor Koorime, and she crashed on the wall.

“Yukina-chan!!!” Botan said in horror. “What in the world is Yusuke doing?!

“He's acting really weird,” Koenma observed in alarm. “He's not himself!”

Yusuke then formed a ball of red energy in his hand, and threw it at Yukina. Yukina's scream rang through the TV screen.

“Yukina!” Botan screamed. She pulled Koenma's hand. “Come on, Koenma-sama, we have to go to the Ningen Kai now!!!”

“Yes, I agree!” Koenma said. “Yusuke has a lot of explaining to do.” He turned to follow Botan, when suddenly, another oni came charging through the room, yelling, “Koenma-sama! KOENMA-SAMA!!! KOENMA-SA—” and he tripped on the table, and landed on Koenma. Koenma flew into a rage. “IDIOOOOOOOTTTT!!!!!!!” he shouted, and started to wrestle with the unfortunate oni. Botan sweatdropped, and tried to see through the cloud of dust on the floor.

Finally, Koenma managed to go on top of the oni.

“Gomen nasai! Gomen nasai! Koenma-sama, please, gomen!!!!” the oni said, panting. “I just have terrible news. A large group of youkais are attacking the castle—”

“Why didn't you say so sooner, baka?” Koenma said angrily.

“I tried, but you wouldn’t listen—” the oni said.

“Never mind," Koenma said, getting up, infuriated.. "Have they entered the palace gates?”

“Yes, Koenma sama,” the oni said.

“Well then, hold them off as long as you can,” Koenma said.

He turned to Botan. "Botan, you have to go,now!"'

“But Koenma-sama, what about you?” Botan said worriedly.

“I have to stay here and defend the castle,” Koenma said. “Ask help from Hiei, Kurama, or whomever. Just tell them to come to the Rei Kai right away!” He heard voices from a distance. The enemy was coming.

“But what if they hurt you?” Botan said, fighting tears in her eyes.

Koenma held her shoulders, and gazed at her pinkish eyes. “Better me than you!” he said gravely.

Botan looked at him, and suddenly her tears started falling. “Koenma-sama…” She nodded, and hurried outside.

“Botan-chan…” Koenma whispered, watching her leave. “I…I care for you more than you know…” He exhaled slowly, and clenched his fists, ready to fight.

Suddenly, Mishina banged open the door, a great number of youkais following her. “At last, Koenma,” she said cruelly, “The Rei Kai is mine.” Koenma exhaled in relief. At least they didn't have Botan with them. She probably got away in time.

“You’ll never get the Rei Kai for I'm still here!” he said coldly.

“True, true,” Mishina said replied. “And how do you suppose we would be defeated by you? I still have many youkais waiting outside. You're outnumbered. Give it up!”

“Never!” Koenma said. “Don't underestimate me.”

“Oh, I'm scared,” Mishina said sarcastically. “Do you think I would be easily defeated by a young man who still wears a pacifier? You're pathetic!” She laughed.

This angered Koenma. “I said, never underestimate me!!!” he yelled, and removed his pacifier. “FUUMAKAN POWER!!!” he yelled, and a flash of blue energy started towards Mishina. She glanced at it coldly, and even smiled in satisfaction.

A green flash of energy collided with the Fuumaken’s power. It was able to overcome Koenma’s ki, and suddenly exploded, throwing Koenma backwards into the wall. His pacifier was vaporized in the explosion.

He blinked in confusion at Mishina. “But how…? Youkais are supposed to be defenseless against my Fuumaken…”

She gave him a sly smile. She nodded at the blonde haired boy beside her. “Toki here is the most powerful member of my troops. He has the powers of a class-S demon, and yet he’s human.”

“You…you trained him!”

“Right,” Mishina agreed. “You’re not as stupid as you look, then. Anyway, he got lost in the Ma Kai three years ago, and I found him. Trained him ‘til he was strong enough. Guess my hard work paid off, ne?”

“You will never get away with this!!!”

“You think so?”

Mishina leered at the prince. Behind her, one of her soldiers called her attention. “Mishina-sama.”

Mishina turned to the soldier. “Have you got those treasures yet?”

“Hai.” The soldier handed to her the three treasures of the Spirit World.

Mishina smiled, and walked over to Koenma. She grabbed his collar.“Too bad, prince. I got the treasures now, and no one can stop me.”

“Don’t bet on it,” Koenma glared at her.

She let him drop to the ground hard. “Genei,” she called out. “See to it that Koenma is given a nice, enjoyable beating. Enjoyable for me, of course. But make him suffer, ne?”

She is so cruel, Koenma thought, as Genei punched him in the stomach, hard. I cannot let her become the new ruler of the Rei Kai…never…

And that was the last thing that came into his head, before finally blacking out.

Shizuru hurried along the streets, her breath coming into short gasps. She carried Keiko in her arms, who she found in the Urameshi residence not long ago.

Please let them be all right…she thought, worry etched on her pleasant features. Darn those drunken men anyway! I could have still saved Keiko then…it’s a good thing I managed to beat up those men anyway, they deserved it!

She arrived at her own house, and stopped to catch her breath.

“Yukina-chan!!! Kazuma!!!” she shouted, hoping against hope that they were all right.

But no, they were not.  With a cry, she ran towards Yukina, who lay unmoving on the floor.

Thank goodness. She’s still breathing. She sighed in relief, and put Keiko down on the sofa. She turned to check up on Kuwabara, who was also out cold on the living room floor, a few inches away from Yukina.

She suddenly sensed a presence behind her. She turned around, a good-natured smile on her lips. “You could knock, you know.”

“There was no door to knock on,” the crimson haired young man replied, quite sheepishly. “Hiei destroyed it a while ago.”

“Hn,” was the only reply of the said fire demon.

“Hello, Kurama, Hiei,” Shizuru said. “Oh, and Seiko-chan, you’re here too. Although…” she frowned a little, “Seiko’s not your real name, is it?”

Naomi looked at her, quite surprised. “Let me guess—you have strong rei ki too, ne? That’s why you know.”

Shizuru nodded. “I’m psychic.”

Naomi smiled, and gave Shizuru a brief introduction on her true identity.

“I see,” Shizuru said, and gave her a friendly smile.

She turned to Kurama. “What are you guys planning then? And how do we help them?”

“We can’t leave Keiko and the others like this.” Kurama replied pensively.  “You see, they will use up all of their remaining spiritual power just to live. But after some time, it will all be used up. The thing with this spirit ball Yusuke used on them is that if it hits them, it will take even their ability to replace their ki.”

“You mean…” Shizuru’s voice trailed off on the sudden realization.

“Yes,” Kurama said gravely. “They will die.”
