Chapter 1
Reikuyo
Kurama looks up from his biology textbook and rests his head on his palm. The teacher mumbled on monotonously about advance plant science. The lesson was boring and of no use for Kurama. He could memorize even the university biology textbook from the back to front.
He
tapped the back of his pencil on the table, rhyming along with his favorite
song. He turned his head to face the window, the blue sky with fluffy white
clouds reflecting in his emerald eyes. He liked the sky, even though knowing
that there are more hidden in these air layers then you know, he likes to think
of it as just an empty field with no weeds poking your butt.
The
bell rang and the teacher left the class. The form teacher was taking the next
lesson. Kurama piled his textbook neatly under the table and reached for
Elementary Math. A head popped out from the backdoor and Kurama raised an
eyebrow. The head checked for any teachers and then, with hyper speed, slam
herself into the seat beside Kurama. Kurama looked at her questioningly.
It
was a girl. She had fringeless chin-length hair that went straight down to the
bottom. However, at the back of her head was a braid that went to her waist.
Their ruby red shone in the light. She quickly settled herself and she slid in a
pile of books under her table. Taking out her Elementary Math and Notebook, she
then answered to Kurama’s look.
“Hey!
Don’t tell the teacher that I was late, okay?” She whispered to Kurama, her
violet eyes sparkling mischievously in the bright classroom light. Kurama
shrugged and smiled. He didn’t mind being an accomplice in someone’s little
lies. Well, he often did that to tease Yusuke. The form teacher stepped in at
this point, hushing the class to silence.
“Today
we have a last-minute entry to our school. Sakyou Reikuyo. She is sitting beside
Minamino-san.” The class turns to look at her. She simply replied with some
sort of gesture shown by raising her hand. The guys in the class gleamed at each
other, while the girls whispered among themselves. Kurama gave a small smile,
eyes in a half-opened state.

The bell rang in a blast of rings and in each class, pupils filed out in groups or individuals, heading out after school. Before long, the passageways were packed with different colored bags in disarray. Kurama picked up his bag and prepared himself for the Biology Club meeting. He swept some of his scarlet hair away from his face, making almost every girl present blush.
However,
a certain noise interrupted this supposedly perfect filming of a bishounen.
Kurama looked down in amusement to find Reikuyo snoring away, face plastered on
her History textbook. She had fallen asleep halfway through the last period. The
teacher noticed that, but shut an eye for the newcomer’s first day. And now,
Kurama wondered if he should wake her up, for she might have something to do
after school.
“Sakyou-san?”
Kurama asked gently. He offered a tap on the shoulder. No reaction. And the
snoring seems to get louder. For those who never seen a teenage girl snore, it
was a rather unpleasant sight. Kurama bumped his hand against her face. The
ignorant girl snuggled closer against her textbook. Giving a sigh, Kurama
resulted to using the more impolite way to awake someone. He grabbed her
shoulders and shook it vigorously. This finally worked.
“Nani…?”
Reikuyo groaned, pushing her hair away from her face. She blinked twice, and
then she glanced at the clock. Mumbling her thanks, she picked up her school bag
and was out in a minute. Kurama took his leave too, and the room was empty.
Except for a dark figure that stood in the shadows.

Kurama walked in the glorious sunset, bag swung onto his shoulder. He gazed fondly at his surroundings. Everything looked so calm and beautiful. The sky looked as if it was going through autumn. As he walked past a deserted field, a group of people caught his attention. There was a gang of five girls against one dark blue haired girl. So being the busybody that he was, he paced closer to have a better view.
Getting
close, Kurama recognized Reikuyo as the girl who got outnumbered, yet there was
life in her eyes. Confidence danced in her eyes and she was smirking at the
other girls. She twirled her long braid with her fingers threw her bag on the
grass.
“Now,
now, girls. You think that you can defeat me? Next time, do me a favor and wear
paper bags on your head when you go out. All of ya look disgusting!” Reikuyo
sneered at them. The five girls exploded with anger and they rushed up to
Reikuyo, each throwing an attack at her.
Reikuyo
twirled away in graceful steps, portraying the same grace Kurama has. Then, she
picked up a ball of dirt and threw it at the girls, hitting one of them face-on.
Reikuyo guffawed, as she rolled more earth balls and threw them at her rivals.
Within eight earth balls, Reikuyo had smashed soil on all their faces. Those
girls now flared up, fire rising up from their back. Reikuyo noticed this and in
quick reflexes, she picked up her bag, flipped herself up and ran away quickly.
“Every
heard of mud-masks? Heehe…Yeow!!” Reikuyo exclaimed, bumping into Kurama and
falling onto him. “Baka!” Reikuyo scolded, rolling onto the road before
looking at the red-haired youko. Kurama pulled himself up, rubbing his sore
head.
“Oh,
it’s you, Mr. Goody.” Reikuyo said, reaching for her bag. Kurama nodded,
then point at five mud monsters that were approaching. Reikuyo gave a yelp and
grabbed Kurama’s arm before speeding down the street.
And so, Reikuyo and Kurama ended up hiding in a flower shop three blocks away while five horrendous muddy girls raced past. Breathing a sigh of relief, Reikuyo inspected the shop. Bunches of flowers were placed in racks inside the fridge while others were out in the open.
Subconsciously,
Reikuyo opened one of the fridge’s glass doors. She picked out a single dark
red rose, which glowed beautifully like a ruby in the bright lights. Kurama
looked on fondly at this rose.
“Dark
red rose…its flower code is shyness.” Kurama said, gently touching the
petals. Reikuyo paid for the rose and started out, letting the store’s door
close with its bells ringing noisily. Kurama walked beside her, a sheepish grin
hanging from his face.
“You
like roses?” Kurama asked, swinging his schoolbag over one shoulder. Reikuyo
nodded, tearing her gaze from the rose. She looked at the dark blue sky,
eyebrows locking as she thought of something. Then, she looked around at the
street of shops.
“Minamino-san,”
Reikuyo started, looking intently into Kurama’s eyes with her own violet ones.
“Erm…I was thinking…could you…could you like…” Reikuyo bit her lower
lip, stopping in her steps and looking down onto the pavement.
“Yes?”
Kurama answered softly. His eyebrows concentrated in a concerned frown. Reikuyo
looked up at him and opened her mouth to say something, closed it again,
before…
“Could
you show me somewhere to EAT? I’m famished!!!” Reikuyo moaned, pouting with
a mouth in a downward turn. Kurama chuckled at this sight and nodded, for his
stomach was growling too.

At
the top of Mieou High School’s building, a dark figure stood, eyes wandering
over the city. Enormous wings lay still behind him, pure white feathers
prickling along with the cold night wind. One of the feathers fell off, drifting
away gently with the wind. A dainty hand flipped out of nowhere, its long
fingers wrapping around the feather.
“Tamayi,
Tamayi, Tamayi-san…” A coaxing voice called out as she waved the feather
around, her coloured fingernails shimmering in the moonlight. “It’s been so
long since I’ve seen you. What are you doing here?” The dark figure slowly
turned to the woman clad in a mini-skirt. In the little bit of light available,
a fair, handsome face became visible, with short unkempt dark blue hair framing
it. His beauty made people think that he was God’s son. White shimmering wings
were fixed onto his back. He was --- an angel.
“Kaenorai.
You have another project up on your sleeves again, don’t you?” Tamayi said
coldly, his eyes lighting up with ice. Kaenorai turned her mouth up into a dark
smile. She flipped some loose magenta hair that had fell from the bun at the
back of her head.
“Tamayi-chan~
Didn’t you benefit from the same project sensei had conducted eight years
ago?” Kaenorai cooed, her palm tracing down Tamayi’s cheek. Tamayi’s eyes
flashed with anger and a silver sword-like ray shot out from his hand and
flipped it in a process to kill Kaenorai. He stopped at her neck, eyes fixed
onto Kaenorai. She looked up at him indignantly, with a taunting expression on
her face. Tamayi removed his hand and with a flip of his wings, he soared into
the sky.
“Sensei…you
should have lived to see this. This time, it’s my turn.” Kaenorai whispered
at the disappearing angel.

“So…what were you doing with those girls just now?” Kurama asked, taking a sip of coke from his glass. Reikuyo pushed her spoon through her ice cream and sighed.
“I
can’t help it to be a transferee. Those girls thought that they would teach me
who’s the biggest.” Reikuyo answered, shoving the spoon into her mouth. She
had just left school to return home for a good nap, but ended up having a
mud-fight with the group of girls. Placing her elbow onto the table, she rested
her cheek on her palm and yawned lazily.
Kurama
stared at her. She looked so restless and lazy. It was a kind of laziness in
which you’ll never find in a teenage girl. They were usually so bubbly and
cheery. You’ll never find them sloughing in front of a guy or in a restaurant.
Reikuyo was sloughing totally. She
looked as if she was going to fall asleep right away on the table. Kurama copied
her sitting position and grinned at her.
“What?”
Reikuyo asked tonelessly. She read Kurama’s eyes and leaned back on her seat,
trying to look angry but with a smile on her face. Kurama chuckled at her
expression and returned to his refined sitting.
“Sakyou-san,
why didn’t you finish off those girls?” Kurama questioned, for he had being
wanting to ask for an answer. It was odvious that Reikuyo could easily take
those girls on. From the very first move she made, Kurama knew that she was just
fooling around. Reikuyo took another yawn.
“Nah,
they are not worth it. I’m too lazy.” Reikuyo replied, stretching out.
“And I never knew that Mr. Goody knows about combat, neh?” She raised an
eyebrow at Kurama and peered at him through half opened eyes. ‘Sharp.’
Kurama thought, avoiding the inquire by looking somewhere else.
“It’s
late. I got to go. Bye, Minamino-san.” Reikuyo said, giving up on getting an
answer and she picked up her bag. “Thanks for the treat, ja neh!” Before he
knew it, she was out of the restaurant and away. Kurama had never promised to
treat her. He shrugged; the bill wasn’t too much anyway.
-+-
After
spending a week sitting beside Reikuyo, Kurama found himself getting more and
more interested in her. The ‘I-can’t care less’ look on her face and the
way she always looks restless made him curious for there was just this line
between her and a typical girl. Kurama often found Reikuyo dozing off behind a
book. Fortunately, he was usually able to wake her up before the teacher
noticed.
And
so, on the Tuesday of the second week, Kurama found himself with a sleeping
beauty again. Reikuyo’s head plopped onto the wooden table and the gigantic
Chemistry book she was holding fell and revealed a manga that she hid in between
the book.
“Oh,
oh…double offense…” Kurama thought, as Reikuyo drifted off to dreamland.
Kurama picked up his eraser and waited for the teacher to turn around. Then, he
flipped the eraser into the air and it hit Reikuyo on the back. Unfortunately,
Reikuyo didn’t wake up, and unfortunately again, the teacher happened to have
super sharp eyes and before you know it, the duo was sent outside the class.
“Okasan
wouldn’t be happy to hear about this…” Kurama muttered to himself and
leaned against the school’s white coloured walls. Reikuyo raised an eyebrow
from behind the manga she had managed to smuggle out.
“Sorry,
mummy’s boy. You shouldn’t have bothered to wake me up. I expected myself to
get caught.” Reikuyo apologized, eyes still fixed on her manga. She then
proceeded to slough against the wall.
Kurama sighed.
