THE CAR WAS SOLD ON SEPTEMBER 23 2007
The amount of money spent on getting Smurfie together costed
$6,000.00 according to the original owner who sold it to me back
in the mid 90's. Since then, the car had been driven only to the
local car shows and on occasions only when the weather was clear
The car was never driven in the snow or rain - only one time when
I had to drive it back home after I purchased it. The car had been
sitting in the barn for almost 1 1/2 years which most likely caused
some of the problems listed below.
INFORMATION ABOUT SMURFIE
(BEFORE HE WAS SOLD)
The car was purchased at a Litchfield VW show in 1997.
I am not a mechanic so I won't be able to answer your questions about
the engine. I know at the time of the purchase, it had a new engine
with oversize valves for better speed, a new carb, 12v alternator.
The engine alone was about $1500.
The car was parked in the barn with a car cover (a lot of hay and dust) so
the car may look dirty in some photos. (It will need a good bath)
The car started with a jump but will need a new battery
The car may need a master cylinder (no brakes)
The interior had been replaced and is not original

The running boards had been replaced and are not original

The handle for the sunroof which is metal, has been broken at the time
I bought it and had been using a screwdriver to open it. Worked perfectly
this way. Opened and closed smoothly. Half of the handle was still there and
the other half was saved, maybe can be welded together?
There was a little rust build-up near the running board where it meets
the drivers side front fender. There was also some rust build-up in the 2 front
fenders (click here for the photos page).
The rear bumper had some rust as well (click here for the photos page)
The speedometer didn't work.

Had VW splash guards (rear only)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
"SMURFIE THE CELEBRITY"
I was told that Smurfie was once
in a Taco Bell commercial.*
*Smurfie was also featured in a 1996 Credit Suisse
commercial that was filmed in Greenwich, Connecticut.
That commercial was shown throughout Germany &
Switzerland, and advertised Credit Suisse's personal
banking products. The actors spoke German, and was filmed
outside of a modern Greenwich mansion. Smurfie's previous owner
had registered the car with:
Cooper's Film Cars
137 Perry St
New York, NY 10014
Phone 212-9293909
He had calls for many other commercials but he was working
full time and could not always get to the city. The daily rate
for the car was $150-200 in 1996.
