Christine Elliott's Site Devoted to Rabbits Indoors & Outdoors
I really try hard not to get rabbits from pet shops (only Poppy, George & Ragwort came from pet shops), as baby bunnies will always find a home.  However, I came across Basil in a pet shop and fell in love with his little lamb face straight away.  He had actually been bought, but the owners had returned him to the shop as they were concerned at how big he was growing!  I’ve always wanted a big bunny, and the fact that he had been rejected made me adopt him at once!  I think of Basil as the baby of the gang, although a big one at that!  He is a very muscular and strong buck, although I have been worried that his ‘muscle’ may actually be fat!  He has been on diet food, but this didn’t make a lot of difference.  At his most recent check up he was weighed, and has not put any weight on since last year.  Basil is a real darling, and hates any confrontation.  He will jump out of the run if he thinks any trouble is in the air.  I never thought it was possible to have a bunny group all living together, but Basil has lead the way in living peacefully, and is a big softie!  His health is very good, although being slightly on the larger side, he does sometimes have difficulty cleaning himself, and so does need bathing from time to time, especially in warmer weather when flies are around!  He also has a problem with one of his eyes, in that it can get crusted over.  Poppy groomed Basil well, and kept this problem under control, however within a week of Poppy’s passing, Basil’s eye was totally covered over.  Hence our decision to get Tulip as a new bunny companion for him.
