King's Highway 402 |
Hwy 402 is a very important freeway link between Hwy 401 in London and the Bluewater Bridge from Canada into the United States, allowing traffic from Toronto to reach destinations such as Chicago via I-69. It also serves as a connection between Sarnia, Strathroy, and London. Hwy 402 is considered part of the southern part of London's proposed Ring Road, along with Hwy 401. |

Wonderland Road looking northbound at the entrance to Highway 402 eastbound. Although this section of Highway 402 was completed in 1981, this interchange was not built until 1997, when the "gap" of Wonderland Road between Exeter Road (formerly Highway 135) and Hamlyn Street was filled in, allowing for a new major gateway into the west part of the city from Highway 402. Currently there is a proposal to build another interchange on Wonderland Road at Highway 401 to the south of here, which would extend Wonderland Road into Elgin County, and ultimately, St. Thomas. (In my humble opinion, when and if Wonderland Rd is extended to St. Thomas, it should become a new route for Highway 4 through the City of London.) Photo taken 23 April 2004. |

The Bluewater Bridge in Sarnia, which marks the western terminus of Highway 402 in Sarnia. At the time this photo was taken, the second span of the bridge had been recently opened, and the original span, opened in 1938, was closed for repairs. The second span opened in July 1997. This photo was taken in June 1998, just a few months before the 60th anniversary of the opening of the original span of the bridge. This bridge is a key economic link between Canada with the United States, and is the fourth busiest international crossing in Ontario. |
