When did front porches go out of style? They haven't been used in quite a while. Oh, we decorate and make them pretty, Then don't use them, what a pity. I remember evenings, Mom and Dad in the swing, Quietly discussing what tomorrow might bring. They watched us kids as we ran quickly around, Chasing lightening bugs that flew close to the ground. We played marbles and jacks on the concrete floor, At Christmas we hung lights around the front door. Sitting on the steps, sparklers in hand, We celebrated the birth of our great land. It was on this front porch, where I was first kissed, Then Mom flicked the porch light and he was dismissed. I remember two years later, I'd sit there and pray, Hoping for a letter from Nam to arrive that day. I ran across that porch, tears streaming down my face, My soldier was home, my world back in place. When I go home to visit, I paint the porch with care, So it will be there for the next generation to share. |
