I Love the 70's and I Love the 80's! For being most excellent documentaries |
You keep your PBS and History channel (just give them back to me for Mystery and Conquest). As far as I'm concerned, the best documentary series (if you could call it that) are these VH1 gems. After I got done watching them, I totally felt like I lived these two decades that I either wasn't alive for or don't remember. The presentation--not using a narrator and relying completely on the comments of assorted B-list celebrities--makes it so fun that you don't care that they stick to pop culture, ignoring most world events, politics, and other "serious" stuff. Actually, the lack of serious topics makes it all the more amusing. The closest they get is covering Jimmy Carter's Killer Rabbit attack. The Wellies give special recognition to som of my favorite commentators: Hal Sparks (for his disturbing accuracy, even when he wasn't alive for 1970), Michael Ian Black (for his remarkable deadpan), Mo Rocca (for cuddling a Pet Rock), Ellen Cleghorne (for her comments on Roots and Tony Orlando), and Kermit the Frog (because I love him). There are others, but they weren't as funny :) This is definitely one of those things that I can watch over and over and over again, but never quite get sick of. I can't get enough. In fact, I'm so very excited for I Love the 80's Strikes Back, with more footage than before. Hurrah! You know, VH1 should pay me for this. They should pay me by letting me be on I Love the 90's.
