The Henry J. Wellard Award is presented to...
THE CAST OF THE RETURN OF THE KING!
For excellence in EVERYTHING IMAGINABLE.
A message for the Academy:  WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?

To save myself some trouble, I'm just sticking them all under one award, though I assure you, each actor will be recognized for his or her accomplishments.  Allow me to begin with the Big One:

Sean Astin. This was the biggest shafting of them all.  Of any character, he gave me the most sniffle moments.  His portrayal of Sam is exactly what it should have been.  So Sam didn't have as much depth as some of the other characters; but that's because Sam doesn't need depth!  He has one purpose, and that's to save his Mr. Frodo, and darnit, that's what he did.  Sean's performance was so incredible, and I honestly can't see why he wasn't even nominated for an Oscar.  I've got six words for those people: "Don't go where I can't follow!"  But to hell with them!  Sean's getting a Wellie instead.

Elijah Wood.  Come on, people.  Those eyes.  I can't think of one other actor who can say so much with just a set of baby blues like our Lij.  He was a perfect Frodo, even though he screams like a girl.  I can't think of any other actor who could have done what Elijah did.  He so perfectly sank into the corruption of the ring, and you can always see that behind his reluctant smiles to Sam, there's some serious shit going on.  Screw those high-falutin' awards.  You're getting a Wellie, Mr. Wood.

Viggo Mortensen. How could they have even thought about casting someone else.  Viggo deserves an award for his sheer dedication alone.  This man slept in his costume for cripe's sake! He became Aragorn in such a way that sometimes it's hard to delineate between the two.  (The only difference is that Aragorn doesn't mumble like Viggo!)  He's a prince among actors and a king among men.  It's incredibly refreshing to find an actor whose main concern is art, not image.  Go Viggo!

Billy Boyd: No, he's not just the cute background hobbit!  Just as Sam and Frodo grow up as they move closer to Mordor, Pippin and Merry grow up in their own right.  Pippin especially goes through an extraordinary transformation through the story.  And while he's not the brightest crayon in the box, his heart is always where it should be: in the fight for Frodo.  Billy was especially good in film 3, where you could really see that he's not just comic relief anymore.  The look in his eyes when he's forced to leave Merry...oh man, tears all over the place.  And his girly screams when they're trying for a Faramir barbecue.  Perfect.  Billy really is a gifted man, not just as an actor, but as a musician too!  He has a gorgeous voice.  So Billy, have a Wellie!

Dominic Monaghan:
Isn't it the cutest thing ever when he screams DEATH!  That's right, this midget can kick ass, and gets to share a saddle with Eowyn (the little hobbit's got skill with the ladies!).  Can't get much better than that.  He kneecapped the Witch-King, people--how could he not be critically acclaimed for that?  That, and all of his "we will see the Shire again" and tear-jerky moments.  Love 'im.  Wellie for you too!

Miranda Otto: Love.  Her.  She so totally rules.  I seriously can't wait until the EE DVD so I can see her in the Houses of Healing.  She's amazingly talented.  There are too many things I can say about her.  Eowyn was one of the first characters I read about before seeing onscreen, and I can honestly tell you that Miranda is the perfect Eowyn, and she's done so much with the character that I am eternally thankful for.  She really should have gotten some kind of official award for her work.  I hope that she maintains popularity on this side of the Pacific so that I can see her in more.  Miranda, a Wellie for the coolest woman in acting!

THE REST OF THE CAST:  There's not one actor who didn't pull his weight, no matter how OOC they might have gotten (coughElrondcough).  So everyone else: Bernard, Orlando, John R-D, John N., David, Beanie, Sala, Lawrence, Liv, Hugo, the Ians...everyone--you're all the best!
