The Southern Harmony

Good Old Way

To Go Home

In September, 1835 a Philadelphia publisher, E. W. Miller, brought out William Walker's songbook The Southern Harmony, and Musical Companion. Walker edited three editions of the Southern Harmony: first in 1835, then with an additional 40 pages in 1847, then the 3rd and final edition in 1854. It is his 3rd edition that exists to this day in edited facsimile, currently a product of the University Press of Kentucky, with editorial material  by Glenn C. Wilcox. For many years singing from The Southern Harmony took place only in Benton, Kentucky each May, but SoH singings are again on the rise, and its many unique and interesting tunes joining those from The Sacred Harp in our consciousness.
