In recent years, Subaru's sales have largely come from the fact that their entire lineup of cars features AWD as a standard feature. However, before this was the case, there were few characteristics to distinguish these blandly styled compact cars from the competition. Subaru's first attempt to change this image came with the introduction of their Outback line of cars and wagons. The Outback models of the Impreza and Legacy were aimed at buyers interested in the higher seating positon and aggressive looks of an SUV, but the driving dynamics and fuel consumption of a car. With big tires, a slightly raised suspension and fender flares, these cars were successful in satisfying their objective and continue to sell well today. Much like the Mitsubishi Evolution, Subaru has offered an AWD, turbocharged car, called the WRX, for many years in foreign markets, but decided against bringing the car to the US. In an effort to further expand their presence in the US market and create a halo for the entire Subaru brand, the company decided to import their much acclaimed WRX to American shores in 2002. Powered by a 227hp, flat 4-cylinder engine, the WRX is capable of going 0-60mph in 5.4 seconds, quite an impressive feat for a four door vehicle costing less than $25,000. Due to their cheap price and incredible performance potential straight from the factory, the WRX is possibly the best value to be had for individuals searching for a compact performance car. |
