The Corolla, unlike its competitor, the Civic, has been slow to catch on with enthusiasts until recently. Regardless of generation, Corollas hold plenty of untapped potential after a little work is performed. Toyota has always been quite conservative when it comes to their offerings in the US market. As a result, high performance engines were often available in versions of Toyota vehicles sold in Asia, Austraila and Europe, but for whatever reason, were never brought to the US. American enthusiasts are finally realizing this fact and as seen in the first two puictures below, have begun importing engines from overseas to swap into their Toyotas. More recently, Toyota has identified this hole in their model lineup and has addressed it by creating two new sport models of the Corolla, the Corolla S and the Corolla XRS, the latter of which features a 170hp engine taken from the Celica. In addition, they have introduced an entire brand targeted at young people, called Scion, which undoubtedly will have something to offer for driving enthusiasts.
