Well, that's a good question. Since I am a firm believer that the more information you put out on the web about yourself, the bigger a target you become (I know, sounds paranoid, but hey, I've been burned before), I prefer to tell you why I have created this website.
Years ago, I had started another costume website, which I had enjoyed working on immensly. But for personal reasons, I had to stop working on my little site, much to my dismay. My love of costumes is a fairly new concept to me. I never remember playing dress up as a child, except for my BarbieŽ Doll. I do remember being in love with Dororthy's ruby slippers in The Wizard Of Oz, But other than that, I didn't sew, I wasn't much interested in makeup or anything particularly dressy.
Right around my early twenties, I began to feel a particular pull towards movie musicals and found myself becoming entranced by the dazzling array of costumes.
But in 1997, I went to see a movie called "Titanic" and for the first time, I felt my interest in costume making hit it's zenith.
I like everyone else, I fell in love with the gorgeous costumes Kate Winslet was lucky enough to wear and remember that the first time I saw the movie (yes, I saw it more than once.. but didn't everyone?) that all I remembered seeing were the costumes, and as Rose was standing on the back of the Titanic, contemplating jumping, I was silently saying to myself, "She had better not jump and ruin that beautiful dress!" I knew then that something new and exciting had just captured my interest.
Nothing like it had ever happened to me and it began a long love affair with movie costumes and costume making that I still have today.
After hours of searching the web, I decided that I couldn't find examples of particular costume designs that interested me, and I was tired of surfing around for websites of particular movies for that certain picture that I needed, hence, The Movie Manniquin was born.
I don't prefess to be any expert in the field of costume making, in fact, I never learned to sew until I was in my late 20's, and I was self taught. But I do know what I like. I love soft, romantic costumes. I love the Glass and Ruby slippers, the Heart Of The Ocean, Satine's red Satin gown from Moulin Rouge and I feel like the best use of a persons time is to share your passion with others.
So, I begin this journey as nothing more than a mere fan and lover of beautiful things, the same as you. Maybe I want to make a dress and can't find that picture, or that link that will help me with my creation, or maybe I've made a movie replica or have one in my possesion that I am dying to share with others. Well, this is where I will do it. I am really interested in your participation. I see so many sites on the web that feature beautiful creations and I would love to feature them on our site.
So get comfy, and prepare to do some serious surfing. We are not here to judge the worthiness or unworthiness of a particular film (and there are some really bad ones, with beautiful costumes) merely to show some pictures and share some knowledge. Make our home, your home and enjoy!
Sincerely,
A Fellow Costume Lover.... |
