Advanced Power Standard

Do you realize how long the US has been been on the 60-Hz power standard?

Ours is an
old power systems paradigm - I'm sure everyone knows that, but do you have any idea how old it really is? This power system was first proposed at the turn of the century (and by that, I don't mean, THIS century). The system we have now was originally devised in the days before computer electronics, or even television. In fact, our power system pre-dates radio. Is there any good reason to be complacent about that, or believe that its support for future electronics systems will be fully adequate? Have you ever wondered whether there could be something better?

I have an idea for a brand new paradigm for the distribution of AC power. I propose a fairly radical shift in paradigm, using an approach that makes it possible to produce from a single pair of wires a rather wide variety of useful power products, including

(1) high-frequency AC (which requires smaller power supply capacitors for home & office electronic devices, like computers);
(2) 5 volt DC;
(3) 3-phase, 230-volt, 50-cycle AC;
(4) 3-phase, 115 volt, 60-cycle AC; and
(5) 5-phase, 115 volt, 60-cycle AC (which runs motors with smoother torque curves) ... even,
(6)
15-phase AC power ....

all from a single pair of wires - not integrated, or even in the least interconnected with our fault-prone wide-area "power grid".

I know my approach could be useful in airplanes, and cruise ships, but I also think it would be good for international markets (say, idyllic
BERMUDA), where they need power systems sufficiently flexible or adaptable to run electrical products from the US, but also those from Europe.

Of course, I'd also like to see this approach adopted here in America, beginning with hotels, and other commercial users. I'd like to start power companies in major cities, to compete with the established power companies for their downtown commercial customers, offering a considerable variety of value-based power-product services - and after last year's power blackout, I'd strongly advise business leaders to get themselves off our extensive, but vulnerable power grid.

On that score, of course, I offer a tempered opinion. Still, I'd insist that we would be better off with a new, high-tech, independent, alternative power grid. I'm arguing, then, for further power-industry de-regulation, and for government/industry conferences for the establishment of new standards. For a number of reasons, by the way, I think these new power systems should be run by
telephone companies.

As for the 5-phase motors - they may be the best sort of powerplants for electric cars.
