Maria was fuming. Today she was supposed to be going to the movies with Isabel and Liz, but her mom asked her to paint the upstairs of their little apartment house. She tried to get Isabel and Liz to help her, but since she was not going, they had invited Max and Alex to go. She looked around her mom’s room, the first room she was going to paint. She looked down at the paint her mother picked and sighed. Her mother was going through one of her many stages. This one was one where she wanted to act like a teenager and paint the whole house a variety of colors. On the floor was bright blue, red, white, yellow, green, orange and purple. She had told Maria that she did not care how she painted it, just as long as she was creative.
This would take her all day! “Forget it!” Maria muttered, “I’m not doing this alone.” She went to the phone and dialed Michael’s number.
“Ello?” Someone answered.
“Um, hi. is Michael there?”
“Micky!” he yelled so loud Maria had to hold the phone away from her ear, “Phone! And make it quick. I’m watching TV.”
“Calm down Hank.” She heard Michael say in the background.
“Don’t talk back to me! I am your father! Respect me!” Hank yelled. Maria could tell he was drunk by the way he was talking.
There was a fumble as Michael picked up the phone. “Max?” Michael said into the phone.
“No. It’s Maria.”
“Oh! Um, hi. What’s up?”
“Oh, nothing. It’s just, my mom’s making me paint the whole upstairs, and I was wondering if you wanted to help.” She tried not to sound too desperate.
“Why didn’t you ask Liz?”
“Oh, her and Isabel are going to the movies. I was supposed to go, but, you know, I got stuck doing this, so..”
“I would, but Max and I are supposed to meet up with Alex at the mall. Sorry.”
“Have fun trying to get them to go with you. Liz and Isabel invited them to go to the movies, and we both know they’re not going to say no to that.”
“Oh. Wonder why he didn’t tell me?”
“Well, it was kinda a last minute thing. So, do you want to help or not.?”
“Well, I have nothing better to do. I’ll be over in a while.”
“Okay. See ya soon.”
They hung up.
