Decision making having long term implications are termed strategic and tactical.These decisions are for the most part global and they encompass both quantitative and qualitative issues. The decision making for such a model integrates various aspects of the supply chain. Consequently, the models that describe these decisions are huge, and requires handling huge data.

Decision making having short term implications are termed opertional. These decisions address the day to day operations of the supply chain and pertain to issues such as inventory control, production planning and scheduling, safety stock issues, logistics and forecasting modules. The models that describe them are often very specific and generally objective in nature. These models use linear and integer programming, heuristics and genetic algorithms to provide very good solutions to the decision maker.
