Hope

Hope, a word used all too commonly but not defined very clearly. When someone hopes for something, they wish for it, but they have some idea it might happen. Many things have been accomplished because of hope, people resort to hope when they have nothing else to go to. People hope their mother gets better, people hope they get the job, they hope for many things and don’t even realize that they make these things happen. People are hope, they determine the outcome of their wishes most of the time, they just have to go out and do something.

There are many connotations that go along with the word hope, most people think of hope as somewhat of a wish. This is about as far from the truth as you can get. People may say “I hope everything goes ok” or “I really hope I get this promotion”, but in order for these things to happen the person needs to do something about it. In most cases the person who is hoping for something actually goes and does something to help his/her situation. For instance, I hope my mom stops smoking, to help the situation I try and tell her at least once a day. This is my way to influence what I “hope” is going to happen. This may take awhile or it may not even, even though I am actively trying to influence the outcome, everything doesn’t always go the way I want.

The word hope paints a different picture in everyone’s mind. Most people thing on angels or something spiritual, not me, I think of people working together to get something done. There are also many synonyms people think of when they think hope, promise, trust, desire, go for, and faith to name a few. The only synonym that fits my definition of hope is desire and still, that doesn’t fit it very well. To me everyone has a skewed vision of hope, they view and angel coming down from the heavens to grant their wish and save a loved one or make their business flourish. They look for hope in times of despair, but in times of despair they also work had to get things they need done.

Hope is viewed as a battery for the spirit, but it isn’t hope that gives people this feeling, it’s the people around them and even the person themselves who creates this sense of “hope”. Hope is often also viewed as a child, and this is true, but not the child just because it can choose its own path in life, not because the child has a new beginning, because the child will grow up to do things to help others, even if it is only in a miniscule way on the large scale of things.
