History:
The Samoyed comes from the north-eastern regions of Siberia where a nomadic tribe called Samoyeds lived; hence, the breed's name. The dogs, descended from the Spitz family, were used to protect and drive the herds of reindeer from one place to another as the tribe travelled. They were also used as freight and pack dogs. It wasn't until the late 1800's that a fur-trader discovered the breed and brought some back to England in 1889. Development of the breed took place shortly thereafter, and the breed's popularity grew. The "Sammy" makes an excellent family companion, which can live in the city or country. Providing it still gets exercise and family love they deserve.

Temperament:

The Samoyed also known as the smiling dog, is intelligent, alert and full of action. This breed is dependable, happy and extremely loyal to their master. This friendly dog loves the company of children and to be included in all family activities. Samoyeds display affection towards all mankind, making them much too friendly to be guard dogs, although some will bark to alert their master of anything unusual.

The Samoyed being essentially a working dog, are strong and active yet graceful. They have what’s called a double coat, which the body should be covered with a thick soft short undercoat that keeps them warm, and a more corse topcoat to keep out the rain and snow.  The colour of their coat can be Pure white; white and biscuit; cream.

Their Lips black, nose also black, but may be brown or flesh-coloured.(Known as a snow nose). Having thick ears not too long and slightly rounded at the tips sitting well apart and covered with soft fluffy hair, fully erect once the dog is grown. Finishing off this beautiful dog is their luxurious Tail which they carry over their backs although tend to drop it when at rest or feeling hot. Dogs size average being between 50.8 - 55.8 cm (20 - 22 in) at the shoulder. As Bitches average being between 45.7 - 50.8 cm (18 - 20 in) at the shoulder. Weight in proportion to size.

The Samoyed is active and needs a good workout every day, either in the form of a long walk or jog or a vigorous play session. They like to pull and herd being their instinct. They can live outdoors in temperate to cold climates, but  much prefers to live indoors with their human family. Their thick coat needs brushing and combing two to three times a week, daily when shedding. Males shed once a year and bitches about two to three times a year.
