In keeping with the Rotary theme Service Above Self
the club has devised a number of Projects Many of our projects have emphasis on young
people and the community around us.
Vision 2000,
the District Project
As part of the
Vision 2000 project, the Rotary Club of Alleppey and Alleppey East launched a School
Darsan Programme with a target of screening 20,000 students in and around
Alleppey. About 40 School teachers were given necessary expertise by Dr. P. Venugopal (Rtd. Prof. and Head of the Dept. of Ophthalmology,
Medical College Hospital, Kottayam) for eye-screening of the students. The teachers were given
Snellen's
Charts and Performa for examining and reporting the details of students
screened.
Our District Governor Viswanathan inaugurated the Vision Screening Programme in
our adopted school Lutheren High School, South Aryad on 31-8-1999.
The Screening was closely watched and
follow-up action taken by the Rotarians, as a result nearly 13,500 students were
already screened with in the last three months as shown below:

A workshop on Vision 2000 was conducted on 5-9-99 by Rtn K.P.
Ramachandran Nair (dist. Chairman) at Rotary East Charity hall which gave an
impetus to the programme.
An eye camp was conducted at Rotary Community hall Alleppey on 27-11-99.
Our beloved D.G. Viswanathan was kind enough to be present on that important
occasion. A team experts from Aravind Eye hospital examined the
participants. Nearly 600 people benefited from the camp. 83 persons
were found to have cataract out f which 79 patients were taken for operation to
Tirunelveli by special buses. After the successful surgery they were taken
back to Alleppey by Train on 2nd of December '99
December being the month of examination,
eye-screening in slow in many schools. so its is decided to complete the
screening in all the schools in the coming months and to re-examine all the students
by an ophthalmic assistant in the first week of February and to issue spectacles
to all the needy students.
