X/1999
Story & Art By Clamp

The millennium is approaching, and the Earth's last days are approaching with it. As foreseen by Japan's greatest prophetess, Hinoto, the entire Earth falls to a terrible cataclysm, beginning with the destruction of Tokyo...and at the center of her dreams is a young man named Kamui Shiro, who she has seen in her visions as both destroyer and angel. Surrounded by allies and enemies, Kamui is at the center of the prophecy that will finally decide the Earth's fate...ultimately, it will be his choice whether to save Earth, or to destroy it.... Story and art for X/1999 is by the four-woman artistic team Clamp, creators of Magic Knight Rayearth, RG Veda and Tokyo Babylon. X/1999 (the original Japanese title is simply "X") is one of the group's most ambitious since RG Veda, which gave a shôjo revamp to the Hindu legends of India. The story of X is at its core a saga of fate, and it has an appropriately huge scale, with amazing, graphically dramatic artwork. X has also been animated as a full-length theatrical feature in 1997, directed by Rin Taro (Galaxy Express 999) with character designs by Nobuteru Yuki (The Vision of Escaflowne). At this moment, a U.S. release date for the X movie (through Manga Entertainment) has yet to be announced, but we'll keep you posted! (In case you were wondering: the movie and the manga stories are not exactly the same, so even if you've seen the film, there's plenty in the manga that will surprise you.)
