I have read an awful lot of fiction, and non-fiction as well I'd say. The problem with authors that spit out book after book is they often end up telling the same story time and again. I have read quite a few books by Stephen King and Dean Koontz who are supposedly authors of incredible talent. I do agree they write well but is there anything beyond the tale? If you like authors who are really well read in the fact behind their tales I would recommend an author best known for movies about dinosaurs. He is Michael Crichton. This guy is smart. Not just book smart but people savvy. He has written about things that range from big scary lizards to corporate corruption, time travel and airplane disasters. He does have an underlying theme. He seems to me to have a fascination with the 'order' (or lack there of) of the Universe. He is well versed in things like mathematics and Quantum Physics. Don't let that scare you. He speaks in laymans terms. He has a way of looking at things that make you say 'Hmmm...'. He sticks up for the good guy and the rat bag, bad guy ALWAYS gets it in the end! He writes in such a way that you think, not just about the subject he is writing on but your place in the world as well. |
