12/22/00 - MAX e-mail from Jeannie - "Max is a 5 year old Huskie/Australian Husky mix. We adopted him from a shelter 4 years ago. I had never had a dog as an adult and really wanted one. Bruce thought it wasn't a good idea. Well, now I refer to Max as my first and last dog. He is a wonderful pet, but, lots of work. He needs lots of walking and I am only a fair weather walker. Our recent snow has not pleased me, but Max wants to go anyway. Max never barks unless he has a raccoon trapped. He has killed 11 raccoons, innumerable smaller rodents. Because he doesn't bark, he would tap on the door to go out and tap on the screen door to come inside. This didn't help the screen door so Bruce installed a doorbell on our back screen oor and taught Max to ring the bell. It is always funny when we have company and the doorbell rings and we have to tell them, 'it's just the dog'. Of course, if we don't respond quickly, he rings the bell again."
12/22/00 - PEPSI from Moli - "I really thought it was funny when I read your email about Max. When mom and I first got Pepsi she was only 6 weeks old. It was the first time we lived in a place where we could have a dog, although they did give us size limitations. We weren't really happy with our new townhouse, but were concerned about the next place (which turned out to be Las Vegas) and if we'd be allowed to have a dog, so we taught her not to bark immediately. We got a large bird bell, and hung it from a chord from the back door knob. In less than a week's time, Pepsi associated the bell with opening the door, and would bump it with her little nose. When she tried to paw it, she'd fall as a clumsy little pup. Although the bell became her favorite "toy", and she loved to ring it to go outdoors, it worked well with both the no barking as well as very quick housebreaking. And here I thought we were so clever ... great minds think alike." Her home page and pictures are

12/22 CHURCH by Jessica (recounted as told to Vicki) First of all, he is really a she, and her name isn't Church, it's PRECIOUS. My mom and Patrick call her Church and they say she is full of the devil, but SHE is really a very loving cat, and her name has always been Precious. (Vicki noticed everyone called her Church). There's a picture of Church on Pepsi's home page, and it shows why the rest of the family know she's Church!
