GAME 1, Skyhawk Invitational at L.C. Bird.
No. 8-ranked Chiefs score four first-inning runs and Duty throws a no-hitter for 5-1/3 innings in leading Monacan to an easy first-round win.
Linville drives home a first-running run with a double (one of his two hits) and moments later, Mitchell adds a base-loaded, three-run double.
"We needed to get out swinging the bats and get runs on the board early," Linville tells the Petersburg Progress-Index afterward. "We've had trouble doing that the past couple of games. We wanted to stay back on their pitcher's off-speed stuff and drive the ball into the gap."
Meanwhile, Duty finishes with six innings of one-hit ball (with six strikeouts); Mitchell adds a hitless seventh.
"He was very good," Monacan coach Ben Bradford tells the paper of Duty's performance. "He was hitting his spots. He's coming back from an injury, and we're trying to get him some work on all of his pitches. We were really focused on making sure he could spot three of his pitches. He's a little rusty, but he's getting there."
Of Mitchell, he added: "That's his job," Bradford said. "Drive in runs and help us on the mound when we need him. If he can continue to do that, he's got some good hitters he's hitting behind. If he can pepper the right-field gap, that's what we're looking for."
Monacan's win sets up semifinal game with host team.
