15 at Dinwiddie W 7-2 Chiefs fall behind 2-0 in season opener on a fourth-inning Dinwiddie home run (of nearly 200 feet) by Lauren Hicks. But Duncan otherwise stops Dinwiddie and Monacan's bats finally awake in the sixth inning. Aided by three Dinwiddie errors, Chiefs send 10 batters to the plate and score 6 runs. Big blow is Beadles' 2-run triple. Young Chiefs start four freshmen and two sophomores.
Monacan ---------- 000 006 1 -- 7 10 0
Dinwiddie --------- 000 200 0 -- 2   3 6
18 at Atlee W 8-2 Chiefs get two inside-the-park home runs in turning close game into easy win. Beadles hits a third-inning triple and a fifth-inning HR. Young drives in three runs with a pair of singles. McMurray ices the cake with a two-run HR in the final inning. Duncan throws another three-hitter and doesn't allow an earned run. Chiefs get two dramatic outfield plays as well: centerfield McAllister's long running catch of a line drive in the right-center gap, and leftfielder McMurray's diving grab of a short fly ball.
Monacan (2-0) ---------- 003 030 2 - 8 10 4
Atlee (0-2) ---------------- 000 200 0 -- 2   3 2
22 at Thomas Dale W 2-1 Monacan, getting two clutch plays by Bertovich in the final inning, wins dramatic game that literally could go either way until the game's final second.
Undefeated Chiefs, facing their toughest opponent so far, get only five hits but most come at opportune times. McMurray singles, Staten walks, and Duncan gets an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. McAllister singles in the fifth and reaches third before the inning ends. Chiefs' final two hits come in the top of the 7th: Young singles and reaches second on a fielder's choice, then is brought home by Bertovich's game-winning single. "I was just praying for the hit," Bertovich tells the Petersburg Progerss Index afterward.
But Chiefs have to wait before celebrating: Thomas Dale puts runners on second and third with two outs in the final inning. Next batter hits a pop-up behind second base, and second-baseman Bertovich and shortstop Loftis collide while chasing it. If the ball is caught, Monacan wins; if it falls, Dale wins. Bertovich holds on for the victory. "We had called for an intentional walk on the last batter," Coach Starr tells the Progress-Index. "We just didn't get it far enough outside. ... We've been working on who has authority to call for a fly ball. Brianna is the last one. They all called her off, but she didn't pick up on it."
Duncan's pitching and Chiefs defense had kept Thomas Dale at bay most of the game; Knights' only run was unearned. Chiefs' cause was helped by first two double-plays of the season: in the third inning, third-baseman Young fields a ball and throws to first-baseman Milton, who throws home as catcher Staten makes the tag on a sliding runner; in the fourth, centerfielder McAllister makes a running catch and throws to Staten to double-up a runner. "Both teams played very good defense," Starr tells the Petersburg paper. "You just hope you can scratch out a run."

      1 PRINCE GEORGE
    (No. 7 in Metro)
L 2-7      No. 7-ranked Royals hand Chiefs first loss of season. Five Prince George doubles, some poor Monacan decisions in the field, and wild pitches and passed balls do in Monacan.
Hosner (2-for-3) and McMurray (double) are Monacan's hitting stars. Chiefs get two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to avoid shutout. Duncan, Young (6th, 7th innings) handle Monacan's pitching in final outing before district play begins.

    Prince George (2-0) ------ 210 031 0 - 7 12 3
    Monacan (3-1) ------------- 000 000 2 - 2   3 2
      5 at L.C. Bird
    (No. 6 in Metro/Region)
L 1-6 No. 6-ranked Skyhawks score five runs in the third inning to take control of an otherwise-low-scoring game in Dominion District opener.
Chiefs get a chance to take an early lead when Bird errors put runners on first and third with one out in the third inning, but a baserunning error shortcircuits the inning. Meanwhile, Bird gets the most of four hits and shaky Monacan defense to score five runs in the bottom of the inning. Monacan pitcher Duncan allows only three hits in the remaining innings.
Chiefs only run comes in the fourth on their only hit. McMurray triples to deep left-center, becoming one of only three Monacan baserunners for the game, and scores on Staton's run-scoring groundout.

    Monacan (0-1, 3-2) ------ 000 100 0 - 1 1 3
    L.C. Bird (1-0, 2-1) ----- 005 001 0 - 6 7 2
7 JAMES RIVER W 3-1 Chiefs even their district record at 1-1 by taking better advantage of opportunities than the Rapids. Both teams rap out seven hits and both teams contribute errors to the other gteam's cause. In fact, James River and Monacan draw two errors apiece on force plays when players either do not cover bases or do not have their feet on them.
But Rapids leave a total of 5 runners on base in the third and fourth innings. Meanwhile Bertovich, who goes 2-for-2, drives home a second-inning run for an early 1-0 lead. James River ties the game in the third. But McMurray, who goes 2-for-4, drives home two runs with a fourth-inning single that prove the game-winner.
Duncan gets the win with a complete game.

    James River (0-2, 3-2) ---- 001 000 0 - 1 7 4
    Monacan (1-1, 4-2) -------- 010 200 x - 3 7 5
8 at Collegiate W 6-2 Chiefs rap out 12 hits in winning more easily than score suggests. Duncan (4 innings, plus returning to finish the 7th) and Young combine on one-hitter. Collegiate's runs are set up by walks in the final inning.
Everyone plays for the Chiefs. Staten goes 4 for 4 with a double. Milton goes 2 for 4, with an inside-the-park home run to center field.
Game with private school filled in one of the holes from rained-out four-game tournament. Teams play again in two weeks.

    Monacan (5-2) ------- 100 400 1 - 6 12 0
    Collegiate (6-4) ------ 000 000 2 - 2   1 0
12 at Clover Hill W 3-1 Chiefs score twice in top of the final inning, then hold off Clover Hill's bases-loaded, one-out threat in the bottom for dramatic win.
Monacan strikes first on Loftis' infield single, McAllister's sacrifice bunt, McMurray's walk, a double steal (aided by a passed ball) and Staton's run-scoring ground out. Clover Hill comes back in the bottom of the first inning to tie on a single, two walks and a wild pitch.
Game then settles into a pitching duel with Duncan keeping the Cavaliers at bay, aided by McMurray's running catch in the fourth inning and Staton's throwing out a would-be base stealer in the fifth. Chiefs can get going offensively, either.
Last two innings are played in rain. Monacan finally breaks through in the seventh, scoring two runs on Duncan's walk, a stolen base by pinch-runner Pennington, Loftis' run-scoring bloop to center (her third hit of the game), and McAllister's run-scoring bloop to center. Clover Hill uses its own bloop hits to load the bases, but Duncan induces ground-outs to Young and to herself to end the game.

    Monacan (2-1, 6-2) ----- 100 000 2 - 3 5 2
    Clover Hill (0-2, 1-4) --- 100 000 0 - 1 7 1
15 DINWIDDIE W 12-1 Newly ranked Chiefs (No. 9) win an easy one, rapping out 15 hits and scoring in each of their six innings.
    Highlights: Hosner 2 for 3, 4 RBI. Beadles 2 for 3, 2 RBI. McAllister 1 for 3, 3 RBI. Milton 2 for 3. Duncan pitches complete game.

    Dinwiddie (3-4) ----- 100 000 1 -   2   6 3
    Monacan (8-1) ------- 131 133 x - 12 15 3
19 MIDLOTHIAN L 0-4 No. 2-ranked Midlothian puts its first six runners on base -- four singles and two walks -- and effectively wins the game right there.
From then on, the game is almost a toss-up. Duncan holds Midlo to one run on six hits the rest of the way.
But the Trojans' 3-0 lead proves more than enough. Monacan bats never get going: Loftis, McMurray, Staten and Beadles get the only hits, a single apiece.

    Midlothian (3-1, 6-1) ----- 301 000 0 - 4 10 1
    Monacan (2-2, 7-3) ------ 000 000 0 - 0 4 1
21 at Manchester ppd Postponed by rain to April 29. Score was 3-2, Manchester, when rain came. Monacan's runs came on Staten's single off the centerfield fence.
    22 COLLEGIATE canc rain.
    28 L.C. BIRD W 1-0
    (8 innings)
No. 9-ranked Chiefs get a dramatic win in extra innings when McAllister's third hit of the game -- a two-strike squeeze bunt -- brings home the game's only run.
Duncan's best-pitched game of the year, an eight-inning one-hitter with six strikeouts and four walks, shuts out the unranked Skyhawks, who had been No. 6 the week before. Good team defense helps, as does catcher Staten, who throws out a would-be base stealer.
But Chiefs can't get anything much going offensively, either, striking out 10 times against Bird's Meghan Cobb.
In the home half of the first extra inning, Redfearn opens with a pinch-hit single to right. Pinch-runner Pennington is sacrificed to second base. Lead-off hitter Loftis bunts the ball in the air -- but it goes over the head of the charging pitcher and falls for a clean single. McAllister's squeeze bunt, coming with two strikes, catches the Skyhawks unaware as Pennington crosses the plate with the game-winner.
Hitting highlights: McAllister 3-for-3,RBI. Redfearn 1-for-1. McMurray, Staten, Loftis all have singles.

    L.C. Bird (2-4, 6-5) ------- 000 000 00 - 0 1 2

      2 at Manchester
    (No. 6 in Metro/Region)
L 3-11 Tough loss for the No. 9-ranked Chiefs, who take a 3-0 lead before the roof falls in. No. 6-ranked Lancers score seven times in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by Erica Skinner's grand-slam home run on Manchester's short (180-foot-fence) field.
Monacan highlights: Beadles 2 for 3, RBI. McMurray 2 for 4. Duncan pitches complete game.

    Monacan (3-3, 8-4) -------- 002 10 0 -   3   5 0
    Manchester (5-1, 7-3) ----- 000 722 x - 11 13 2
3 JAMES RIVER L 0-4 Overachieving Chiefs finally come up against a team they should beat -- and lose.
Duncan pitches complete-game seven-hitter and gives up two earned runs, but Monacan errors lead to two unearned runs. Bigger Monacan woes are at bat. Ineffective Chiefs get only two hits: McMurray's clean single through the left side of the infield, and Young's bunt single (she narrowly misses beating out a second bunt.)

    Monacan (3-4, 8-5) ------ 000 000 0 - 0 2 4
    James River (2-4, 6-4) --- 012 001 x - 4 7 0
      5 CLOVER HILL T 2-2
    (15 innings)
Marathon game finally called for darkness, ending in a tie after 15 innings.
Unranked Cavaliers jump to 2-0 lead over the newly unranked Chiefs; Monacan gives up the second run on a botched defensive play against the steal. Chiefs tie the game up, though, on RBI singles by Staten in the third and fifth innings. Neither team scores after the fifth on a cold, blustery day.
Chiefs get solid pitching for all 15 innings from Duncan, including one inning that ends on just three pitches. Chiefs get a double play, when shortstop Loftis throw home with the bases loaded; Staten throws on to first to end the inning. McAllister makes two running catches on bloops into short center field; one comes after an inning-opening triple and helps the Chiefs get out of the inning unscathed.
Monacan hitting stars include Staten, McMurray 3 for 7, Loftis 2 for 7, Beadles 2 for 7.

NOTE: Game followed field dedication for former coach J. Keith Daniels. (See "Notes & Achievements" at right.)
    Clover Hill (2-3-1, 5-6-1) -- 020 000 000 000 000 - 2 13 1

10 VARINA canc Game canceled at request of Varina, which had several district make-up games.
    12 at Midlothian
    (No. 6 in Metro/Region)
L 0-4 Sloppy defense and weak hitting do in the Chiefs, who give up three unearned runs. Loss hurts Monacan's bid to sew up one of the playoff spots in the very tight Dominion District.
Chiefs continue habit of falling behind early, then playing tough ball, by trailing 3-0 after two innings. Duncan pitches complete-game six-hitter with only the one earned run.
Offensive highlights: McAllister 1-for-3; her single in the final inning is Chiefs' only hit. McMurray 2 walks.

    Monacan (3-5-1, 8-6-1) ----- 000 000 0 - 0 1 3
    Midlothian (6-3, 10-7) ----- 210 001 x - 4 6 1
    17 MANCHESTER
    (No. 8 in Metro/Region)
W 7-0 Huge win for the Chiefs, which comes following Senior Day ceremonies for Sara Gibson, Lindsay Hosner, Jamie McAllister, Kali McMurray, Cali Pennington and manager Becca Greene.
Faced with a must-win situation to qualify for district playoffs, Chiefs play perhaps their best game of the season against the district's first-place team.
Monacan scores three runs apiece in the third and fourth innings, combining base hits, walks and Manchester errors to take control. Big hits are Beadles' 2-RBI single and Staton's run-scoring double to the fence in right-center field.
For the game, Monacan raps out 10 hits. Highlights: Loftis 3 for 4, run. Beadles 2 for 2, 2 RBI. Staton 2 for 3, double, RBI. Bertovich 1 for 2, RBI. McAllister 2 runs, stolen base. McMurray 2 runs.
Young is 1 for 1 but has to leave game with a broken finger in the bottom of the second inning after diving back to third base.
Meanwhile, defensively, the Chiefs also play well, despite three throwing errors. Duncan pitches a complete-game four-hit shutout. McAllister catches two line drives in centerfield, McMurray catches a deep ball down the leftfield line, shortstop Loftis handles several hot ground balls, and catcher Staton makes a terrific catch of a foul pop near the backstop.
Win assures the Chiefs of qualifying for four-team playoffs in hotly contested six-team district. Records: Manchester 6-3, Midlothian 6-3, Clover Hill 4-4-1, Monacan 4-5-1, James River 4-6, Bird 3-6.

    Manchester (6-3, 9-6) ------ 000 000 0 - 0   4 3

    Dominion District semifinals
0-6 Chiefs fall in semifinals of Dominion District tournament at L.C. Bird, ending their season.
For the third time in as many games, Midlo scores enough to defeat Monacan in the first inning, then is shut down the rest of the way. This time, Midlothian (the tournament's No. 2 seed) gets five hits and five runs in the first, and only three hits and one run the rest of the way. (For the season, Midlo wins all three games by a combined 14-0 score, with 10 runs coming in the first innings. Monacan beat every other team in the district.)
Chiefs' best chance this time comes with one out in the fifth inning, when they sandwich a pair of walks around Staton's double (one of her two hits) to the right-field fence. But next two batters ground out.
Duncan pitches a complete-game for the Chiefs.

15 DINWIDDIE W 12-6 Dinwiddie scores first run of the new season in the top of the first but Chiefs respond in their half to knot the score at 1-1. Monacan holds Dinwiddie scoreless in the second and then erupts for 9 runs in the bottom of the inning to take a commanding 10-1 lead. Although Dinwiddie is able to push five more runs across the plate, Chiefs are never really challenged, scoring two more runs in the 4-1/2-inning game, shortened due to darkness. Linville pitches three innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5 Dinwiddie batters. Redfern comes on in relief and allows 1 hit and 2 walks, striking out 4. Offensively: Gray 3 for 3, Douglas 2 for 2, Norton 2 for 2, Linville 2 for 3, Gorham 1 for 2.

15 at Dinwiddie W 15-3 Chiefs lead only 4-3 going into sixth inning but promptly score five runs on numerous Dinwiddie errors, followed by six runs in the seventh.
