W 58-55 (OT) |
At almost exactly the same time the girls team was winning in the final seconds of overtime at Henrico, the boys team did it at James River. Comeback win, capped off by Ryan McAllister's 3-pointer, kept the Chiefs alive for the Dominion District title with a 4-1 district record. Cold-shooting Chiefs fell behind early to James River's methodical offense and sometimes-hot outside shooting. But Monacan rallied with tough defense and some key shots down the stretch, including a Doren Brown three-pointer and a Matt Hinshaw layup off a Lewis Carter pass. McAllister scored five in OT, Jamel Carrington added four. Win keeps Monacan in a virtual tie for second with Manchester (which they play Jan. 23 and Feb. 15), a game behind George Wythe (Feb. 1). L.C. Bird (Jan. 18 and Feb. 6) is right behind in the four-team race. From the Times-Dispatch:

Both led their teams in scoring, too. Ryan logged 13 points, and Jamie 14, including 8 for 8 from the foul line.

at Huguenot |
L 47-61 |
Rapidly improving Huguenot jumped to a 34-11 halftime lead with tenacious defense and Monacan's cold shooting. Chiefs did a better job of running with the quick Falcons and played hard in the second half, cutting the eficit to as little as 11 before falling. Falcons had seven dunks in this physical contest, but a Hugenot player marred the final seconds by (as videotapes show) throwing an elbow to the head of unsuspecting Doren Brown, dropping him to the floor and leaving him temporarily dazed; action was behind the play and no foul was seen by officials. Falcons' win jumped them over Monacan into third place; Chiefs held on to fourth by themselves, thanks to James River's upset of Clover Hill. Top four tams will have home games in the district tournament. Standings, heading into the final week: Wythe 10-1. Manchester 9-3. Huguenot 6-5. Monacan 6-6. Clover Hill 5-7. L.C. Bird 5-7. James River 4-7. Midlothian 1-10. (NOTE: Standings do not reflect Jan. 30 forfeit to Midlothian.) From the Times-Dispatch:
Alvin Harris scored a game-high 19 points, Marshawn Harvey had 13 and Chris Jones added 10 as Huguenot defeated Monacan in a Dominion District matchup. Louis Carter led the Chiefs with 13 points.

JAMES RIVER |
W 61-58 |
James River took an early lead. But Monacan took the upper hand with a sizzling 24-11 second quarter, then held off several Rapids' comeback attempts with late-game free throw shooting. Win was important for the Chiefs, who had dropped seven of their last eight (including a Jan. 30 forfeited win to Midlothian), putting them in a three-way tie for third place; four teams get home games in next week's Dominion District tournament. Standings with one game to go: Wythe 12-1. Manchester 10-3. Monacan 6-7. Huguenot 6-7. Clover Hill 6-7. Bird 5-8. James River 4-9. Midlothian 3-10. From the Times-Dispatch:

MANCHESTER |
L 72-79 |
Monacan came out fired up on Senior Night, taking 21-13 lead after one quarter against the district's No. 2 team. Chiefs still led at halftime. But an inability to stop Manchester's Hans Wampler inside (39 points) and a bad third quarter (outscored 25-12) did them in. With loss, Monacan finished in a four-way tie for fourth place in the Dominion District with Bird, Clover Hill and Huguenot, each with a 6-8 record. Those four teams with be seeded 3-6 by drawing, meaning each will play one of the others in the first round of the district tournament next Tuesday. Two of the four will be at home, two on the road. From the Times-Dispatch:
Hans Wampler's 39 points helped power Manchester over Monacan in Dominion District action. Jeff Brittle scored 16 in the Lancers' victory.
Doren Brown netted 30 points, and Reid Attaway added 15 points for the Chiefs in the loss.

HUGUENOT 1st round, Dominion District Tournament |
W 61-59 |
First round tournament game followed girls game. Monacan No. 3 seed, Huguenot No. 6. (Both teams, along with Clover Hill and Bird, tied for third with 6-8 district record. Seedings for four were by draw.) Doren Brown's two free throws with six seconds remaining gave Chiefs a tough come-from-behind win over the Falcons. Monacan came out blazing, opening up a 14-3 lead. But Huguenot, playing a more methodical offensive game than usual, came back to pull within two at the quarter. Final three quarters were back and forth, first one team, then the other going up by a couple points. Game was tied at the half and after three quarters. Win not only advances Chiefs to district semifinals but also to next weeks Central Region tournament. A win against Manchester most likely would give them a home game in that tournament. From the Times-Dispatch:
With six seconds remaining, Doren Brown drew a fould driving to the basket and sank both free throws, giving No. 3 seed Monacan a 61-59 vicgtory over No. 6 Huguenot.

Monacan Preview
(Richmond Times-Dispatch, Nov. 30, 2001)
Coach: Scott Thackston
Last season:11-3, 17-7
Key players: Reid Attaway, 6-10, Sr., C; Doren Brown, 5-10, Jr., G; Ryan McAllister, 6-0, Sr., F; Marcus Murrell, 6-3, Jr., F.
Outlook: Former assistant coach Thackston inherits a team with no starters back. He does have a good group of ballhandlers, and Attaway is the tallest player in the region. Murrell, up from the junior varsity, is probably the best rebounder. Where the points will come from is a question mark, too.
