Chiefs' final home game -- Senior Night -- was tight throughout, with the largest lead Monacan's at 27-21. Physical game, with both teams showing ferocious intensity down the stretch. A vocal Monacan crowd, swelled by fans from the girls varsity game immediately beforehand, makes it like a playoff atmosphere. Neither team can take control, though, and regulation ends, fittingly, tied at 70.
In overtime, Davis hits with 1:45 left in overtime to put Monacan up but Huguenot responds with its own three-pointer. Preview
Richmond Times-Dispatch, 12/2/02
Monacan
  • Coach: Scott Thackston
  • Last season: 6-8, 9-14
  • Key players: Doren Brown, 5-11, Sr., G; Marcus Murrell, 6-2, Sr., F; Chris McReynolds, 6-7, Jr., C; Michael Graham, 6-0, Jr., G.
  • Outlook: All-district selection Brown (15.8 points) will miss the first month (dislocated elbow). Once he returns, Chiefs will be a handful. They have three players 6-5 or taller, plus some moving up from an undefeated JV team. Monacan should be a challenger by the end of the season.
