15 CLOVER HILL L 35-46 (OT) Chiefs, No. 6-ranked team in the area and #2 seed in the Dominion District, see their season come to an end at the hands of #7 seed Cavaliers.
Chiefs had twice beaten Clover Hill by 15 points this season, though the Cavaliers had been without point guard D.J. Short. This time, Monacan struggles against the Clover Hill 1-3-1 zone and hurts their own cause further with numerous turnovers, many of them unforced, and ill-advised shots.
Rugged game goes back and forth, with neither team able to score much and neither rarely able to grab a lead of more than four points. Football-like scores result: 5-4 after one quarter, 12-14 at halftime, 21-23 after three quarters. Intense fourth quarter goes back and forth, with both teams having a chance to win in the final minute.
Each team scores four points in the first two minutes of the four-minute overtime. From then on, though, it is all Clover Hill: an easy basket when the ball dribbles out of a crowd and four straight free throws by Short start the streak. By the time game ends, Cavaliers have scored the final 11 points.
Shin leads Monacan scoring with 13 points; Nicholas adds 7.

      3 LEE-DAVIS W 56-24 SCORING: Johnson 14, Hughes 13, Dortch 6, Rankin 6, Isaac 4, Buise 2, Davis 2, Ficklin 2, Rannals 2, Roberson 2, Williams 2; Gibson 1.

8 MATOACA W 60-51 For the fourth game in a row, Chiefs jump to a large first-quarter lead by using defense to start the transition offense. Matoaca fights back during the second quarter to close the gap. In the second half, foul trouble plagues Hughes but big three-pointers by Williams and Rannals help keep the Chiefs out front. Dortch and Johnson lead all scorers with key baskets and in the end, free-throw shooting by Hughes keeps the point margin out of nail-biting range.
    SCORING: Dortch 16, Johnson 14, Rannals 10, Hughes 8, Williams 6, Ficklin 4, Roberson 2.
10 L.C. BIRD W 51-38 Chiefs fall behind for the first time all year but fight back to tie at end of quarter one. In the second quarter, they go up by 7 but only hold a 2-point lead at half. Chiefs turn up the heat on defense in the second half, holding the Skyhawks to 13 points and win going away. Hughes leads scorers with 22 and makes some great plays in transition, aided by assists from several teammates.
    SCORING: Hughes 22, Williams 8, Dorch 8, Rannals 5, Roberson 4, Johnson 3, Davis 1.
15 at James River W 63-52 Toughest test so far this season for the Chiefs in their first game away from home. First half is fairly close, with Monacan taking a 7-point lead into the locker room. Scoring margin remains constant through the 3rd quarter but the Chiefs finally take a 13-point lead in the 4th. James River closes the gap on Monacan's bad ball handling decisions but Chiefs hang on for an 11-point victory. Four starters score in double figures.
    SCORING: Hughes 20, Johnson 13, Dortch 12, Williams 11, Buise 4, Rannals 3
17 at Mills Godwin L 24-54 Starting a new line-up, Chiefs are no match for Godwin, falling to their first defeat. Playing without their most experienced players, Monacan digs a deep hole in the first half, trailing by 20 at the break. Regular starting line-up begins the second half but Chiefs never find rhythm on offense or defense, struggling to reach the 20-point mark. Godwin wins going away.
    SCORING: Williams 6, Issac 6, Johnson 6, Ficklin 2, Hughes 2, Rannals 2
    Jan.
5 at George Wythe W 57-39 Chiefs bounce back from first defeat with a sound road win. Monacan uses defensive intensity to stretch a 1-point point lead at the quarter to 7- by halftime. Chiefs continue defensive pressure in the second half and build the lead to 13 in the third quarter. Bulldogs never threaten and new Monacan Coach Van Arsdale substitutes liberally as the Chiefs finish strong with 9 players scoring.
    SCORING: Johnson 14, Dortch 10, Roberson 10, Williams 8, Gibson 5, Hughes 4, Buise 2, Issac 2, Rankin 2
7 at Midlothian W 59-20 Early defensive struggle turns into a rout as the Chiefs defeat district rival Trojans. Key jump shots by Rannals and Williams give Monacan a 19-13 halftime lead in the low-scoring battle. Coach Van Arsdale switches to a pressing defense to begin the second half and Chiefs use transition offense to surge out to a 19-point lead in the third quarter. Monacan's 20-0 run to begin the fourth quarter removes any question of the outcome, and Monacan holds Midlo to just 7 second-half points. Chiefs again have balanced scoring.
    SCORING: Hughes 10, Dortch 9, Johnson 9, Rannals 9, Williams 5, Buise 4, Rankin 4, Gibson 4, Issac 3, Roberson 2
10 at Deep Run W 41-22 Chiefs extend new win streak to 3. Monacan starts the game with a 9-1 run. But Wildcats hang tough, though, mostly due to poor shooting and ball handling by the Chiefs, who manage to close the half leading 20-10. But Chiefs use defensive pressure to outscore the Wildcats 17-0 in the third quarter. Game gets even sloppier in the fourth quarter but Deep Run never threatens. Hughes lead all scorers with 19; no one else reaches double figures and the bench only contributes 3.
    SCORING: Hughes 19, Dortch 6, Johnson 6, Williams 5, Rannals 3, Roberson 2.
12 MANCHESTER W 54-53 Hot 3-point shooting by the Lancers put the Chiefs in a first-quarter hole. Monacan picks up intensity on defense with its press and gains control, leading 32-28 at the half. Lancers' man-to-man press continues to give Monacan fits but Chiefs stretch lead to 6 to end the third quarter. Manchester begins to find the range from 3-point land again in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 1 with five minutes to play. Chiefs manage to stay ahead but turnovers and missed free throws keep the Lancers in it to the conclusion: their desperation full-court heave with 1 second to play falls short. Johnson, Williams and Hughes lead all Monacan scorers.
    SCORING: Johnson 18, Williams 14, Hughes 13, Dortch 4, Roberson 3, Rannals 2.
14 HUGUENOT W 61-40 Chiefs continue their roll with an impressive win. Monacan once again uses defensive pressure to create offensive opportunities against out-manned Huguenot. Falcons score mostly inside the paint but can't keep pace with the Chiefs, who steadily increase their lead to 12 by the end of the half. Foul trouble plagues two starters but Hughes' defense and assists in the third quarter push the game out of reach. Both teams to substitute liberally in the fourth quarter; Chiefs' bench contributes 18.
    SCORING: Johnson 14, Dortch 13, Williams 12, Gibson 6, Buise 4, Hughes 4, Davis 4, Issac 2, Rannals 2
18 at L.C. Bird L 71-74 Close offensive dual sends Chiefs to their first district loss, ending winning streak at five. Monacan ends the first quarter up 15-14 but trails at halftime, 31-28. Game stays very close and the offenses respond with 20+ points by both teams in each of the final two quarters. Game finally decided when two Chiefs make a steal on a great hustle play only to collide with each other --e ball falls into the Skyhawk's hands for an uncontested lay-up. Hughes (32 points) and Johnson (27) have huge offensive numbers.
    SCORING: Hughes 32, Johnson 27, Williams 5, Busie 2, Dortch 2, Roberson 2
    21 JAMES RIVER ppd .
28 at Clover Hill L 44-49 Lance Hughes is moved up to varsity - congratulations! But chemistry, intensity and leadership are missed as the new-look Chiefs try to find a rhythm. Monacan uses pressing defense to close the first quarter with a 6-0 run to lead 18-9. Big 3-pointers allow the Cavaliers to close the gap at half, 24-21. Nothing seems to work for the Chiefs in the second half and Clover Hill takes control, leading by as many as 11. Monacan makes two 3-pointers in the closing seconds to narrow the margin to 5, falling to their second district loss.
    SCORING: Johnson 12, Williams 10, Dortch 8, Rannals 7, Issac 5, Roberson 2.

2 GEORGE WYTHE L 48-49 Chiefs lose a heartbreaker on a 30-foot bank-shot buzzer beater! Turnovers and poor free throw shooting (6-13) plague the Chiefs during a close game throughout. Monacan manages to build six-point lead with less than a minute to play. But Wythe continues to beat Chiefs' press for easy baskets, pulling to within one point with 6 seconds remaining. Bulldogs rebound a missed free throw and run down the sideline and launch the game winner ... the only shot they make outside the paint the entire game.
    SCORING: Johnson 18, Williams 10, Gibson 8, Isaac 4, Dortch 4, Roberson 3, Rannals 1.
4 MIDLOTHIAN w 59-34 Chiefs get back to winning ways with a big win over rival Trojans. Unselfish team play, Monacan's guards and Dortch's rebounding make the difference. Chiefs run out to a 9-point lead in the first quarter and maintain that margin until mid-way through the third. In a 3-4 minute stretch ending the third quarter and starting the fourth, Issac converts two "and 1s" and connects on a 3-point field goal to put the game out of reach. Chiefs' guards score 43 of 59 points.
    SCORING: Williams 16, Isaac 14, Rannals 11, Roberson 8, Dortch 4, Gibson 4, Buise 2.
7 JAMES RIVER W 57-53 Chiefs look like two different teams between first and second halves. Turnovers and "one & done" possessions contribute to Monacan's big half-time deficit, 38-18. But desire, intensity, driving the ball to the hoop and offensive rebounds allow Chiefs to right the ship, outscoring the Rapids 25-8 in the third quarter. Monacan takes its first lead with 6:45 remaining and game remains close until the end. Monacan could have iced it at the foul line earlier, but some clutch free throws by Isaac provide the final margin.
    SCORING: Williams 16, Johnson 12, Isaac 10, Roberson 8, Rannals 5, Dortch 4, Buise 2.
9 at Manchester W 86-69 Chiefs jump to a 13-point first-quarter lead before both teams trade offensive runs. Three-point shooting by Lancers keeps them in the game at half (44-37) and until the beginning of the fourth quarter. Monacan switches to man-to-man defense and the Lancers outside shooting is shut down, allowing Chiefs to rebound and run. Fast-break finishes by Isaac and a dunk by Johnson break Manchester's will. Monacan cruises to its 14th victory.
    SCORING: Isaac 24, Johnson 19, Rannals 16, Williams 10, Gibson 8, Roberson 6, Rankin 2, Ficklin 1.
11 at Huguenot W 59-38 Chiefs finish with strong win to end the season 15-4. Slow start by both teams remains a defensive struggle, but a 3-pointer by Isaac puts Monacan up 12 at half, 29-17. Falcons take ill-advised shots and the Chiefs' transition game takes advantage, pushing to a 25-point lead in the 3rd quarter. Great teamwork and execution allow Monacan to cruise to victory.
    SCORING: Williams 15, Johnson 13, Rannals 11, Roberson 5, Dortch 4, Dugger 4, Isaac 3, Rankin 3, Ficklin 1.
