11 at Midlothian
(No. 3 in region)
L 58-61 Monacan nearly upset the No. 3-ranked Trojans, falling in the final seconds after a furious comeback. Matchup of perennial power Midlothian and up-and-coming Monacan brought out large fan contingent, who got their money's worth. Trojans were playing without center Angel Ross (ankle sprain). But Chiefs came out with intensity and controlled the early going, building a 13-8 lead at the quarter. Monacan led 15-10 before Midlo -- passing, shooting and rebounding well -- finished the half with an 18-6 run. Solid Trojans again dominated after halftime, streching the lead to 12 points. Monacan began a comeback with a four-guard lineup, creating turnovers, hitting three-pointers and getting points underneath. Chiefs twice took one-point leads late in the fourth quarter. Game tied 53-all with 2:30 left. Midlo, hitting key free throws, went up by four down the stretch. Chiefs cut the lead to 60-58 with six seconds left but could get no closer. Teams meet again Jan. 29 at Monacan. From the Richmond Times-Dispatch:
Chloe Nielsen scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the third quarter and snared nine rebounds to lead No. 3 Midlothian past Dominion District rival Monacan.
Carol Visotsky added 14 points, and Erica Martin totaled 13 points and seven rebounds for the Trojans. Jade Morton scored 13 to lead the Chiefs, followed by Kelsie Bradberry (11) and Jasmine Young (10).

Ten players got in on the scoring in easy win.

10 JAMES RIVER W 51-41 Chiefs pulled away in the fourth quarter for their first-ever victory against perennial power James River. Monacan's record against the Rapids had been 0-15 in seven seasons. (James River came into existence in 1994-95, the year after Tiffany Bower led Monacan to the Central Region championship.) Monacan's tough defense and patient offense kept it on top most of the game. But Rapids hung tough until the final minutes. Next: At Henrico, the region's No. 10 team. From the Times-Dispatch:
Jamie McAllister scored 14 points to lead Monacan past James River in a closely fought Dominion District game.
Audrie Ested scored a team-high 12 points for the Rapids in the loss.
Jasmine Young also made it to double digits with 11 points for the Chiefs.

11 at Henrico
(No. 10 in region)
W 69-68 (OT) At almost exactly the same time the boys team was winning in the final seconds of overtime at James River, the girls team did it at Henrico. This was the best win of the season for the young Chiefs, who won on the home court of a ranked team for the first time. Fast-paced game with both teams getting up and down the court but also able to run some patterned offense. Monacan came out on fire, building a 27-10 lead early in the second quarter with tenacious defense and hot shooting; Kelsie Bradberry and Jasmine Young had several steals. But No. 10-ranked Henrico cut the lead to 33-24 at half. Athletic and hot-shooting Warriors took the lead briefly midway through the fourth quarter. Monacan fought back to send the game into overtime at 62-62. Henrico also took an early lead in OT but Chiefs showed good patience and ball movement. Jade Morton hit a free throw to put Monacan up 67-66. Henrico's LaToya Greene responded with a layup as the Warriors took the lead 68-67. On Monacan's final possession, Jamie McAllister drove the lane and dropped the ball off to Morton for the game-winning layup. Chiefs, though, had to survive a final Henrico shot that missed. For the first time, balanced Chiefs had four players in double figures: Bradberry and Morton, 15 apiece; McAllister, 14, and Young, 13. Monacan, led by McAllister's 8-of-8, may have won the game at the free throw line, going 12 of 19 overall. Henrico was just 3 of 11. From the Times-Dispatch (ignore the game errors, which were called in by the Henrico team):
No. 10 Henrico falls in overtime
Jade Morton hit the front end of a one-and-one in overtime, and Monacan held on to top No. 10 Henrico 69-68 in a nondistrict contest.
Henrico's Latoya Greene, who finished with a game-high 29 points, got off a shot after Morton's miss, but it rimmed out at the buzzer. Greene hit a layup to send the game into the extra period.
Morton and Kelsie Bradberry each finished with 15 points for the Chiefs. Jamie McAllister scored 14 and Jasmine Young 13.
The Warriors, who fought back from a 17-point deficit, received 13 points from Tiara Robinson and 10 each from Tanika Banks (10 rebounds) and Mejeeda Bey. Greene had eight rebounds and seven assists.

Monacan ------------------------- 17 16 15 14 7 - 69
Henrico ---------------------------- 8 16 20 18 6 - 68
Monacan (6-2) - Young 13, McAllister 14, Bradberry 15, Spears 0, Dyer 0, Boone 0, Fernald 0, Boyd 2, Lewis 4, Saunders 6, Morton 15. Totals: 28 12-19 69. 3-point goal: Bradberry.

BROTHER AND SISTER ACT: Monacan's McAllister siblings had their timing coordinated at different sites Friday.
Ryan McAllister, a 6-0 senior forward, hit a game-winning 3-point shot at James River at approximately the same time his sister Jamie, a 5-8 freshman guard, was delivering the assist that led to Jade Morton's game-winning layup against host Henrico.
Both led their teams in scoring, too. Ryan logged 13 points, and Jamie 14, including 8 for 8 from the foul line.
GROWTH CHART: Jamie McAllister is one of three freshmen starting for the Chiefs girls team that moved into The Times-Dispatch Prep Poll at No.9 this week.
She is joined by player-of-the-week Jasmine Young and Jennifer Saunders. Morton, a sophomore, and junior Kelsie Bradberry round out the starting five.
"The reason we are winning [4-1 Dominion, 6-2 overall] is that we are able to make up for our mistakes with a lot of athleticism," Monacan coach Natalie White said. "Especially on offense. They are basketball players and play year round. You can tell the inexperience most on defense. They are still learning. In middle school, they played zone. I prefer man-to-man.
"You don't know if you are going to get freshmen or solid play. I have to be patient."
McAllister, Saunders and freshman Mandy Fernald, a top reserve, came to Monacan from an unbeaten Midlothian Middle School championship team. Young and fellow freshmen Samone Boyd and Courtney Dyer played at Providence Middle and were members of an undefeated Reams Athletic Association championship team.
"They are not used to losing," White said.

18 ST. GERTRUDE L 41-49 Chiefs entered game ranked No. 9 in the metro area, their first Top 10 ranking in several years. But sluggish, turnover-filled offensive performance led to their lowest score of the season and an upset win by the Gators. Monacan took a five-point lead after a quarter and still led at halftime. Game was close through much of the fourth quarter until St. Gertrude's pulled away with free throws down the stretch. From the Times-Dispatch:
Courtney Howard had 13 points, and Amanda Thompson added 10 points as St. Gertrude beat No. 9 Monacan.

28 LEE-DAVIS W 69-52 Tuneup for Midlothian game looked early to be a blowout. Chiefs got big leads on the athletic Confederates, leading by 8 at the quarter and 14 at half. But soft defense and key Monacan foul trouble allowed Lee-Davis back in the game in the third quarter. Confederates closed to within two points early in the fourth. But Monacan clamped down defensively, then pulled away with steals and free throws. For the second game this year, Chiefs put four scorers in double figures. From the Times-Dispatch:
Jade Morton scored a game-high 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as No. 9 Monacan rolled past Lee-Davis in a nondistrict matchup.
The Chiefs' Jamie McAllister had 11 points to go with six assists and five steals, and Jasmine Young and Kelsie Bradberry added 13 points apiece.

29 MIDLOTHIAN
(No. 5 in region)
W 64-56 Biggest win of the year for the Chiefs, newly ranked No. 9 in region, who jumped out to a big lead early over No. 5 Midlothian. Monacan lead 22-9 after one quarter and 41-20 early in the third quarter. After jumping in front, Monacan ran "the four corners" ball-control offense against the slower Trojans. Trojans, behind Chloe Nielsen and Angel Ross, cut the lead to five midway through the final period but Chiefs put the game away at the free throw line. Chiefs moved into second-place in the Dominion District with a 7-1 record, behind 8-0 L.C. Bird -- their opponents on Friday and next Tuesday. From the Times-Dispatch:

GIRLS
MONACAN 64 MIDLOTHIAN 56

Long ago, before Jasmine Young was a gleam in her parents' eyes and coaching girls high school basketball hadn't entered Natalie White's mind, Phil Ford of the University of North Carolina used the four-corners offense as a vehicle to stardom.
The former Tar Heels point guard frustrated opponents with his dribbling skills, quickness and ability to beat a defender to the basket and make a layup or dish to a teammate breaking along the baseline for an easy bucket.
Twenty-six years later at Monacan High, Young, a slip of a freshman point guard (she's all of 5 feet tall), runs the four corners to perfection for White, the Chiefs' coach who learned the offense from her father.
Midlothian, ranked No. 5 in The Times-Dispatch Prep Poll, experienced first-hand the difficulty of chasing Young last night in a Dominion District encounter at Monacan. The ninth-ranked Chiefs constructed a 13-point lead in the first quarter, and that was enough to propel them to a 64-56 victory.
The triumph boosted Monacan (7-1, 10-3) into solo possession of second place in the district behind unbeaten L.C. Bird. The Chiefs play George Wythe on Thursday, then go head-to-head with Bird on Friday and Tuesday.
"I knew we could run with them, but I didn't know if we could stop Angel [Ross] and Chloe [Nielsen], two of the best players in the region," White said. "This gives us more of a chance to beat other big teams."
The Chiefs scored layups off their regular offense and in transition to build their lead. On the defensive end, their man-to-man stifled Midlothian's efforts.
"We didn't execute our halfcourt offense. We were very impatient and weren't making good decisions," Midlothian coach Doug Garrett said. "Monacan's defense had something to do with it. Once they got the lead, they spread the floor to their advantage."
Young scored 21 points and had seven assists. Kelsie Bradberry (11) and Jamie McAllister (10) also scored in double figures for the Chiefs. Simone Boyd, Jade Morton and Jennifer Saunders combined for 21 points, with most of their field goals coming off assists by Young. The 6-3 Boyd might have had more than eight points if she had not left the game in the third quarter because of a cut below her eye.
The Chiefs connected on 12 of 18 free throws in the last 3:08 of the game to hold a Midlothian comeback at bay. McAllister, also a freshman, was 6 for 6 from the line.
A more patient Midlothian offense generated layup opportunities in the third quarter, but the Trojans missed more than they made. They cut their deficit to six points three times in the fourth quarter as Nielsen scored 11 of her game-high 22 points. Ross finished with 20.
"As a coach, if you slow the ball down you are either a hero or a dud," White said. "The kids have to do it. I can't ask anymore out of team to make good decisions in a big game."
Midlothian ------------------------- 9 8 17 22 - 56

LAST TIME: The Monacan girls team erased another long Dominion District losing streak with Tuesday's victory over Midlothian. The last time the Chiefs beat the Trojans was in the 1994 Central Region championship game that took three overtimes to decide.
The Chiefs ended an 0-15 streak against James River earlier this season.

31 at George Wythe W 58-27 Quick and easy tuneup for tomorrow's big showdown with Bird. Six players scored seven or more. Every player had scored by halftime. From the Times-Dispatch:
Kelsie Bradberry scored 11 points to lead No. 9 Monacan over winless George Wythe in a Dominion District game.
After a relatively close first quarter, the Chiefs exploded on a 16-2 run to put the game beyond reach. Jade Morton had seven points and 11 rebounds for Monacan. Dominique Ward led George Wythe with 13 points.

L 25-41 Chiefs had an opportunity to pull into a first-place tie with the Skyhawks. But they would have to overcome playing their fourth game of the week, a last-minute surprise that they would not have their point guard and -- especially -- offensive woes. They couldn't. Appearing tentative throughout the game, Chiefs turned the ball over often against Bird's strong defense. They also missed numerous shots. Game was back and forth in the first quarter before turning into a defensive struggle. Monacan still was down only six at halftime but second half was an offensive nightmare: Chiefs scored only six points. Game total of 25 was by far Monacan's lowest of the season (previous low: 41 against St. Gertrude). Bird, undefeated in the Dominion District, is alone in first. Monacan and Midlothian have two district losses apiece. From the Times-Dispatch:

GIRLS BASKETBALL
L.C. BIRD 41 MONACAN 25

Maneuvering around the defense of the L.C. Bird High School girls basketball team is kind of like maneuvering around an obstacle course.
Move this way, and there's a hand in the way. Pass this way, and there's an arm or a leg in the lane. Dribble this way, and there's a body to steer past.
Ninth-ranked Monacan had a miserable time navigating around all the obstructions last night. The Chiefs committed 27 turnovers against a variety of defenses, a major reason third-ranked Bird was able to claim a 41-25 victory in their Dominion District showdown at Bird.
The win pushed the Skyhawks (10-0, 15-1) two games ahead of Monacan (8-2, 11-4) in the district race. The teams meet again Tuesday at Monacan.
"If your man happens to get the ball, you do everything you can to get the ball back," said Bird's Melissa McGruder, who had four steals, 11 rebounds and was the game's only double-digit scorer with 13 points. "[Our defense] is always something in your face. You're usually not going to get an easy pass or an easy shot."
Bird coach Chuck Tester says he spends more time in practice on defense than offense. He even practices some defenses the Skyhawks never use.
"Maybe we'd better switch [to more offensive practice]," Tester said with a laugh. "Right now, we have to play defense. We've got kids who can shoot, but we're not shooting the ball at all [39 percent last night and missed some point-blank shots].
"You're going to have bad offensive nights. You should never have bad defensive nights."
Quickness and physical play have helped the Skyhawks hold opponents to 35 points a game. Up-tempo Monacan came in averaging 62 points. The Skyhawks had 12 steals, just below their average of 15.
The Chiefs averaged a turnover on almost every other possession (45 percent). They trailed 25-19 at halftime but scored just six points in the second half.
"I thought we played like we were afraid to make mistakes," Monacan coach Natalie White said. "We didn't have the intensity they had. It was a slow, methodical-type game, and we're an up-tempo team.
"Their kids were everywhere. [The turnovers don't] count the number of deflections they made and we picked up."
Monacan was playing without its starting point guard and leading scorer, freshman Jasmine Young. She was not in uniform because of a family situation, White said, and her status for Tuesday's rematch with Bird is uncertain.
"We didn't know until this afternoon," White said. "We had no preparation with anyone else at point. However, I don't think that's necessarily the reason why we couldn't get it going. We were not mentally or physically in the game."

  5 L.C. BIRD
(No. 3 in region)
L 49-61 Newly ranked No. 6, the Chiefs were at full strength again for their rematch with No. 3 L.C. Bird. But Bird took control early, combining their usual tough defense with some hot shooting absent in the first game four days earlier. The Skyhawks repeatedly shook their man-to-man defenders long enough to take -- and make -- pull-up jump shots from 8 to 15 feet and had a 33-17 halftime lead. Skyhawks cooled off in the second half -- Chiefs actually outscored them -- but still finished with 25-for-53 shooting. Bird remains undefeated in the Dominion District. Monacan falls to third place with its third district loss; Midlothian is second with two losses. From the Times-Dispatch:

Skyhawks stymie Chiefs with tough defense

Carissa Johnson scored a game-high 18 points as L.C. Bird, No. 3 in The Times-Dispatch Prep Poll, overwhelmed sixth-ranked Monacan 61-49 last night to remain unbeaten in the Dominion District.
The Skyhawks (11-0, 16-1) took control with their defense, forcing 10 first-half turnovers on the way to a 33-17 lead at the break. Johnson had 10 fourth-quarter points to stifle a Chiefs rally.
Lashelle Harris, with 13 points, Amber Godfrey (11) and Melissa McGruder (10) also scored in double figures for Bird.
Kelsie Bradberry led Monacan (8-3, 11-5) with 15 points, and Jade Morton added 10.

7 HUGUENOT W 71-45 Chiefs' easy win moved them into a virtual second-place Dominion District tie with Midlothian (a loser to Bird, which claimed the district championship), heading into the final week of the regular season. The win, coupled with James River's loss to Clover Hill, also assured the Chiefs of a home game in the district tournament. Current standings: Bird 12-0 (district champ, automatically in regional tournament). Monacan 9-3. Midlothian 8-3. Manchester 7-5. James River 4-7. Clover Hill 3-9. Huguenot 2-9. Wythe 0-11. For the third time this season, four Chiefs scored in double figures. For the foruth time, the team scored more than 70 points. From the Times-Dispatch:
Jasmine Young scored 14 points and dished out nine assists, and Kelsie Bradberry added 14 points and six steals as sixth-ranked Monacan dropped Huguenot in the Dominion District.
Jamie McAllister and Jade Morton also reached double figures, tallying 13 points apiece. April Robinson led Huguenot with 13 points.

11 at Manchester L 50-57 Hot Lancers upset the Chiefs on the eve of their advance to No. 5 in the metro rankings. Monacan had beaten Manchester 78-54 earlier in the season. But rapidly improving Lancers won with scrappy all-around play and an ability to get the ball inside time and again for layups. Still, the game was close throughout and tied after three quarters. Manchester got out to a 52-45 lead that the Chiefs cut to 52-50 with about 1:30 to go. But Monacan could get no closer. Loss dropped the Chiefs (9-4) behind Midlothian (10-3) in the race for second place in the Dominion District with one game to go -- and kept Manchester (8-5) alive in the race for third. From the Times-Dispatch:
Nicole Engard scored nine of her 18 points in the fourth quarter, and Christa Franck had 10 rebounds to go with 18 points as Manchester toppled fifth-ranked Monacan in the Dominion District.
The Lancers, who suffered a 78-54 loss to the Chiefs on Jan. 22, also got a strong performance from Jessica Naquin, who finished with 12 points, four blocks and four steals.
Jamie McAllister led Monacan with 14 points, and Jasmine Young and Jade Morton each scored 11.

12 at James River W 51-44 Methodical James River jumped out to 5-2 lead but Monacan responded with the next 11 points and was never headed. James River held to 14 points in the first half. Not the Chiefs' best offensive performance -- only one player in double figures, though four had 8 points each -- but James River was never able to get closer than within four points in the second half. Monacan secures third place in the Dominion District with win. Chiefs, who finished district season at 10-4 (13-6 overall with one game to go), will host the district's No. 6 team in the tournament next week, most likely Huguenot. From the Times-Dispatch.
Jasmine Young scored a game-high 16 points as Monacan, ranked No. 5 in The Times-Dispatch Prep Poll, downed James River in the Dominion District.
Erika Seay (12 points) and Meghan Arrington (11) led the Rapids.

14 at Lee-Davis W 74-57 Chiefs closed out the regular season with their 14th win, doubling their total of all last year. Though the score was close at half, Monacan was in control throughout much of the game. District playoffs begin Tuesday. No. 3 Monacan will host the No. 6 seed, either James River or Huguenot, which tied for fifth. Pairings, with district records: No. 1 Bird (14-0) hosts No. 8 Wythe (0-14). No. 4 Manchester (8-6) hosts No. 5 (either James River or Huguenot, both 5-9). No. 2 Midlothian (11-3) hosts No. 7 Clover Hill (3-11). No. 3 Monacan hosts No. 6 (either James River or Huguenot, both 5-9). From the Times-Dispatch:
Jade Morton led No. 5 Monacan with 20 points as the Chiefs' inside game made life difficult for Lee-Davis in a nondistrict matchup.
Another Morton - Ugenda - paced Lee-Davis with 13 points, but the Confederates fell off the pace in the second half when they were outscored by 13. Jasmine Young added 12 points for the Chiefs.

19 JAMES RIVER
1st round, Dominion District Tournament
W 47-39 First round district tournament game preceded boys game. Chiefs jumped to a 19-6 first-quarter lead, running the offense through post player Jade Morton, who would end with 20 points. But no rout was on. James River packed in a tight zone around Morton, frustrating the Chiefs, who would score only five points in the second quarter and six in the third. Solid fourth quarter allowed Monacan to pull away for its third win in three games against the Rapids this season (despite the newspaper's claim they split). Win advances Monacan, currently ranked No. 6 in the Metro area, to the district semifinals against archrival Midlothian, No. 5. Win also assures Chiefs of a game in next week's Central Region championships. Win against Midlo most likely would give them a home game. From the Times-Dispatch:
Monacan, ranked No. 6 in The Times-Dispatch Prep Poll, jumped to a big lead in the first quarter and went on to eliminate James River 47-39 in a Dominion District quarterfinal. The teams split during the regular season.
Jade Morton paced the Chiefs with 20 points. She connected on 8 of 10 shots from the floor and 4 for 5 from the foul line. Kelsie Bradberry, Jamie McAllister and Jasmine Young combined for 12 of the Chiefs 14 assists.

20 Midlothian
at James River
L 35-49 Dominion District Tournament semifinals. Three weeks after beating Midlothian by eight at home, Chiefs were easily dispatched. Monacan took an early 5-4 lead. But Midlothian scored the final eight points of the quarter and were never headed. Chiefs, down 18-10, cut the deficit to 20-16 at half and had the opportunity to get still closer in the third quarter but failed to convert a couple fast-break opportunities. Midlothian's one-two punch of District Player of the Year Angel Ross and fellow first-team All-District Chloe Nielsen was virtually unstoppable. On defense, the Trojans thwarted Monacan's efforts to run and to get the ball inside to post player Jade Morton, holding the Chiefs to their second-lowest offensive output of the season. Monacan, the Dominion's No. 3 seed, next will play in the Central Region tournament at the home of the Colonial District's No. 2 seed, either Mills Godwin or Douglas Freeman. From the Times-Dispatch:
Chloe Nielsen scored 20 points as second-seeded Midlothian turned away No. 3 Monacan 49-35.
Angel Ross added 12 points, five blocks and four steals for the Trojans.
Jasmine Young led the Chiefs with 10 points.

25 at Mills Godwin L 48-50 Central Region tournament, first round. Unranked Godwin upset the No. 6 Chiefs on a shot at the buzzer. (Good or not? Too close to call. One viewer's repeated viewings of a tape showing shooter and clock could not say clearly if the shot was released in time or not.) Game went back and forth, with Godwin leading by as many as eight in the second quarter (19-11) but with Chiefs taking a four-point lead late in the third quarter (40-36). Turnovers and continued offensive woes plagued the Chiefs, who nonetheless led 48-45 with about three minutes remaining. Chiefs attempted to hold the ball but turned it over three times and were outscored 5-0 down the stretch. Monacan, 11-3 in December and January, fell to 4-5 in February but still ended with its best record -- in fact, its only winning season -- since the regional championship year of 1994. Chiefs' final record was 15-8, more than doubling their win total of last year's 7-15.

Monacan Preview
(Richmond Times-Dispatch, Nov. 30, 2001)
  • Coach: Natalie White
  • Last season: 6-8, 7-15
  • Key players: Kelsie Bradberry, 5-5, Jr., G; Jade Morton, 6-0, So., C/F; Jasmine Young, 5-0, Fr., G; Jamie McAllister, 5-8, Fr., G.
  • Outlook: The Chiefs look to continue the solid play that was displayed down the stretch last season. White is replacing three starters and has no seniors. Bradberry (10.2 ppg last season) and Morton (5 ppg, 7 rpg) will be the bookends. Despite the lack of experience, this is a quick team with good height, and should improve as the season goes on.
