PRINCE GEORGE |
W 68-43 |
Monacan placed four players in double figures to easily win the season opener. Chiefs were somewhat sluggish and without center Jade Morton, out with a hyperextended knee. But they had more than enough for the athletic but undisciplined Royals. Jasmine Young had 14 points (plus five assists and five steals), Jamie McAllister had 13 (plus 15 rebounds), and Kelsie Bradberry and Simone Boyd had 10 points apiece.

MEADOWBROOK (No. 5 in Metro) |
L 55-69 |
No. 2-ranked Chiefs' first loss of the season comes in the opening round of the Richmond Times-Dispatch inSync tournament. Monacan appeared tight at the opening, committing numerous turnovers and allowing easy baskets. Chiefs also were missing defensive stopper Kelsie Bradberry, whose injury two days before was diagnosed as a season-ending torn ACL. Monacan trailed by 16 after disastrous first quarter but then began climbing back, trailing only by 6 at halftime. Monacan could get no closer than 5 points in the second half, though, and Meadowbrook pulled away at the end after Jade Morton fouled out.
Madowbrook's Tara Jones set a tournament single-game scoring record with 32 points. For Monacan, Morton scored 13 points. Courtney Dyer added 10.

Henrico (No. 3 in Metro) |
W 73-63 |
Highly anticipated matchup between No. 2 Chiefs and No. 3 Warriors comes in the consolation game of Richmond Times-Dispatch inSync tournament, at University of Richmond Robins Center, following each team's first-round upset. Running Warriors jumped out to an early lead, which Chiefs narrowed to two by halftime.
Monacan took control in the third quarter, pounding the ball into post players Jade Morton and Simone Boyd for scores. With the lead, Chiefs then spread the floor, allowing point guard Jasmine Young to drive repeatedly to the basket. Playing their second game without defensive stopper Kelsie Bradberry (out with a torn ACL), Chiefs again gave up 30 to one player, this time to Latoya Greene. But Monacan responded with five players in double figures to secure the good win: Young (20), Morton (18), Boyd (13), Jamie McAllister (10) and Jennifer Saunders (10).

MIDLOTHIAN |
W 38-36 |
Chiefs get their second straight win over a top 10 team when Jasmine Young hits a dramatic jumper at the buzzer. Exciting if not always well-played game between two top rivals. Officials allowed physical play, calling few fouls. Midlothian played zone defense, apparently to slow down Chiefs' running and inside games. Midlo actually did more running, scoring several easy baskets when the Chiefs failed to get back on defense. Monacan still appears to miss the injured Kelsie Bradberry on defense.
Pounding the ball inside the Jade Morton, Monacan jumps to an 8-2 lead before Midlo comes back to tie. Chiefs again go up by five, scoring five in a row to take a 17-12 lead in the second quarter, and holding on to a four point lead at halftime, 21-17. Third-quarter mostly belongs to Midlothian, who get strong scoring from Chloe Nielsen and briefly took a five-point lead. Chiefs fight back and final quarter is back-and-forth with neither team able to pull away.
Tied 36-36, Chiefs get the ball with about a minute and a half to go and run down the clock for a last shot. Midlo stays back in a zone and does not contest. Finally, with about three seconds left, Young drives the right side of the lane, pulling up for a contested jump shot just inside the foul line. Shot goes in as time expires. Young and Morton lead the Chiefs with 10 points apiece; Morton was one rebound shy of a double-double.
(NOTE: Weekly rankings, appearing 12/18 but not including this game, dropped Monacan from No. 2 to No. 4 following loss to Meadowbrook. Midlothian rose to No. 6.)
(NOTE: Midlothian's Chloe Nielsen, who was injured but continued to play, later was found to have a broken leg and is expected to miss the rest of the season.)

Three Chiefs combine for 58 points as Monacan rolls to one of its biggest scores in history over the defending Dominion District champions.
Jasmine Young scores 23 points, Jade Morton 18 and Jamie McAllister 17 for the No. 4-ranked Chiefs. Morton added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Eight Chiefs score at least five points as Monacan gets out to a 10-2 lead, takes over the game early and substitutes players liberally. Lead gets as high as 36 points (83-47).
Win puts Monacan (4-0) alone in first place in the district, thanks to a win by Midlothian over Manchester. Both teams are now 3-1.
The 90 points are known to be the highest in at least seven seasons for the Chiefs and may be the highest of all time.

HUGUENOT |
W 66-65 |
Second close home game for the No. 4-ranked Chiefs, as tense as the Midlothian game. Monacan seems to come out flat, particularly on offense, falling behind 7-3 before rallying to go up 10-9. From then on, game is back and forth. Inspired Falcons, looking for their second upset of the year (they beaten No. 2 Petersburg in the season opener), go up by nine in the second quarter, following what amounts to a six-point play (three made free throws on technical fouls, then a three-pointer).
Chiefs trail by only four at halftime. Pounding the ball inside to Jade Morton and Simone Boyd, Monacan leads most of the second half but never by more than a few points. Chiefs seem to take control when Jasmine Young hits two free throws late in the game to go up 63-59. But Huguenot rallies to within one point, then calls timeout with the ball with 16 seconds left in the game. Chiefs' good defense results in a missed Falcon shot in the lane. Boyd comes up with the key rebound with three seconds left and is fouled. She misses the free throws, but Huguenot can get off only a desperation half-court shot at the buzzer, missing badly, and Chiefs get the win.
Morton scores 23 points, with 13 rebounds, for the Chiefs. Young has 12 points and Boyd, 11.

Chiefs continue living dangerously and this time it catches up with them. Monacan takes early lead, pads it to nine points by halftime and stretches it to 11 in the third quarter.
But Colonial Heights, getting all 19 fourth-quarter points from Mallory Starr and Audrey McCartney, fights back. Chiefs try to run out the clock but throw the ball away and Starr's 3-pointer in the closing seconds sends the game into overtime. Monacan stays close in OT and has a chance to go to a second overtime period but can't convert near the end.
Chiefs are led offensively by Jade Morton with 17 points and Jasmine Young with 16. Jamie McAllister and Jennifer Saunders add 11 apiece.

Huge win for the Chiefs, built on strong second-half defense. Big game for both teams: A win for Monacan would put it in control of the district at the halfway point, a win for Manchester would put it in a tie for the lead with Monacan.
First half is close throughout until Manchester takes a five-point lead into halftime over the lackluster Chiefs. Monacan pulls a complete turnaround in the second half, though, getting one of its strongest defensive efforts of the season. Jasmine Young, Jamie McAllister, Jennifer Saunders, Jade Morton, Erica Bradt and Courtney Dyer lead Monacan's stifling, mostly man-to-man defense that holds Manchester to just 6 points in the third quarter and 9 in the fourth (including a three-pointer at the buzzer). For the half, the Chiefs outscore the No. 7-ranked Lancers 30-15. "In the second half, we just couldn't handle their pressure," Manchester coach Jerry Gibbs told the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Young and Morton score 15 apiece for the game. Dyer adds 10
Midway through the season, with teams having played each other once, here are district standings: Monacan 7-0. Midlothian 5-2. Manchester 5-2. Bird 4-3. Huguenot 3-4. James River 3-4. Clover Hill 1-6. Wythe 0-7.

W 81-58 |
No. 4 Monacan comes out hot and avenges an earlier loss to No. 3 Meadowbook (69-55 in the first round of the inSync tournament Dec. 12). Chiefs lead by as many as 16 in the first quarter, scoring nearly at will and holding the Monarchs to outside shots. Meadowbrook tightens the game at halftime but Chiefs blow it open in the third quarter and take a 70-40 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Loss is first for Meadowbrook in its new gym, which opened last season.
Jasmine Young leads the Chiefs with 29 points. Amanda Glenn adds 16. Jamie McAllister and Jade Morton score 10 apiece.
Tara Jones, who had scored 32 for Meadowbrook in the first game, was held to 13.
"We didn't play," Meadowbrook head coach Steve Genovese told the Petersburg Progess-Index. "We're not shooting the ball well, inside or outside. We played well the first half of the Petersburg game and we haven't played well since." Meadowbrook's Portia Lawrence told the paper: "We got out-hustled. We kind of lost our fire."
Monacan coach Natalie White said: "This (Meadowbrook) team can score a lot of points quickly. Last time we played them we couldn't break their half-court trap. Luckily, we got a big enough lead."

at Midlothian (No. 6 in Metro) |
L 53-61 |
Chiefs, up to No. 4 in Metro rankings (and 12th in the state) following win over Meadowbrook, miss a golden opportunity to virtually wrap up the Dominion District title.
Midlothian comes out with great intensity and phenomenal shooting from Chloe Nielsen, Stephanie Fernald and Katrina Owens and almost wins the game in the first quarter. Monacan does pick up the defense and begins pounding the ball inside to Jade Morton, cutting 12-point deficit to 5 points midway through the second quarter. Midlo runs it back to 12. Jasmine Young hits a three-pointer to end the half and cut the deficit to eight.
Monacan appears to be taking control of the game in the third quarter, actually going up three before Midlo comes back to tie. Tied at 45, Midlothian takes over in the fourth quarter behind Fernald's ball-handling, then pulls away on free throws at the end.
Morton scores 25 for the Chiefs. Young adds 16. No one else scores more than 4.

Chiefs began the day moving up to No. 3 in the weekly Metro rankings (despite Midlo loss; No. 3 Freeman also lost).
Chiefs begin the game red-hot, especially on defense, quickly building a double-digit lead they maintained through the first half. But Monacan begins to cool in the second quarter and goes into the deep freeze in the third. Bird outhustles the Chiefs to rebounds and loose balls; Monacan's defense collapses as well. Bird cuts the lead to seven points with a few minutes to go in the third quarter, getting their fans into the game. Then by scoring the first four points of the fourth quarter, Bird is down only 40-45.
But Monacan reverts to first-quarter form, getting good team defense and scoring by Jasmine Young. Chiefs go on a 21-8 run to end the game and win easily.
Young scores 27 points. Courtney Dyer adds 12 and Jamie McAllister adds 11 for the Chiefs.
Win, coupled with Manchester 2-OT win at Midlothian, puts Monacan three games ahead in the loss column with four to play. Tightly bunched district standings: Monacan 9-1, Midlo 7-4, Manchester 6-4, Bird 6-5, James River 6-5, Huguenot 6-5, Clover Hill 2-8, Wythe 0-10.

at Huguenot |
W 67-52 |
Strong third-quarter finish wraps up the game for the No. 3 Chiefs, who have four scorers in double figures. Win assures the Chiefs (10-1 in the Dominion District, with three games to go) of no worse than a regular season-tie (second-place Midlothian, Manchester and Bird each have four losses). Any one Monacan win or losses by each of the other three teams will give Chiefs the championship. Win also runs Chiefs' record to 15-3, equalling last season's win total (15-8).
Chiefs get out of the gates quickly against the up-and-coming Falcons, who were without Kara Scott. After scoring the first basket of the second quarter, Monacan leads 21-9 and maintains the double-digit lead into halftime. Huguenot makes a run to pull to within 40-44 midway through the third quarter, but Chiefs respond with a 9-0 run of their own to go back up by 13 at the end of the third. Teams trade baskets in the fourth quarter.
Jasmine Young leads the Chiefs with 24 points. Jade Morton (14), Jamie McAllister (12) and Simone Boyd (10) also add double figures. For Morton, it is a double-double: She has 10 rebounds by halftime.
(LATER NOTE: On 2/7, Midlo defeats Bird 60-59, eliminating Bird from any chance at tieing for the district championship.)

JAMES RIVER (No. 8 in Metro) |
W 52-49 |
Monacan clinches the Dominion District championship by holding off two comeback attempts by the Rapids. Chiefs (11-1 district, 16-3 overall) thus also assure themselves of a spot in the Central Region tournament regardless of what happens in next week's district tournament. Monacan's 16 wins also are the most in a season since the 1993-94 region-winning team went 23-4.
Unusual game in which Monacan rarely seemed in trouble but James River rarely seemed out of the game, either. Chiefs go up 12-7 in the first quarter but post player Jade Morton suffers an ankle injury scoring on the play. Two post players, Simone Boyd and Amanda Glenn, were already out with illness, and Morton would miss most of the second quarter. Nonetheless, Monacan builds a 13-point lead.
James River cuts the lead to nine at halftime, thanks to good defense and Monacan's turnovers, cut the lead to only 34-32 midway through the third quarter. But Monacan goes on another run to stretch the lead to 43-34 in the fourth quarter, then holds off the Rapids the rest of the way. James River scores in the closing seconds to make the final score 50-47.
Chiefs have four players in double figures: Jasmine Young (13 points), Courtney Dyer (11), Jennifer Saunders (11), and Morton (10).

MANCHESTER |
W 58-49 |
Chiefs jump out to a double-figure lead, hold off Manchester's second-half comeback try (which pulls the Lancers to within two points), then pull away again in winning their 12th of 13 Dominion District games.
Monacan was without center Jade Morton, resting a slight ankle sprain, and Amanda Glenn, out with illness. Chiefs respond with balanced scoring, including four players in double figures: Courtney Dyer (11), Jamie McAllister (10), Jennifer Saunders (10) and Jasmine Young (10). Young also recorded 10 assists for a double-double.
District champion Chiefs still have a makeup game with Wythe remaining but rest of the district has finished playing. Standings: 1. Monacan 12-1. 2. Midlothian 10-4. 3 (tie). Manchester, Bird, James River, all 8-6. 6. Huguenot 7-7. 7. Clover Hill 2-12. 8. Wythe 0-13. Monacan will host Wythe and Midlo will host Clover Hill in opening-round tournament games on Tuesday. Seeds no. 3, 4 and 5 will be determined by the district before other games are scheduled.

Dominion District tournament semifinals. No. 1 seed Monacan scores first four points of the game before No. 4 seed Bird scores seven straight. Jasmine Young leads Monacan with 19 points. Jamie McAllister and Jade Morton add 12 apiece. Morton adds 16 rebounds for a double-double. Simone Boyd is out again for illness.
Midlothian defeats James River 49-41 in the other semifinal of the thrice-delayed tournament. Finals will not be played because of lack of time and being unnecessary for regional seedings.

HERMITAGE (No. 8 in Metro) |
W 58-44 |
Central Region tournament, second round. Chiefs use an overwhelming third quarter, outscoring the Panthers 17-2, to advance to the Central Region semifinals. Monacan comes within 11 seconds of shutting out the Metro area's 8th-ranked team for the full quarter.
Game had two major runs. Down 17-13, Hermitage scores 11 straight points to go up 24-17, then holds a 30-25 lead at halftime.
But the No. 3-ranked Chiefs use their best defensive quarter of the season in shutting down No. 8-ranked Hermitage, the Colonial District's No. 2 team. Monacan goes on a 17-0 run, shutting out Hermitage for 7:49 of the 8-minute third quarter before allowing a basket on Hermitage's last possession. That put the Chiefs up by 10 points after three quarters. Hermitage could get no closer than four the rest of the way.
Jasmine Young leads the Chiefs with 27 points, 10 of them in the third quarter. Jade Morton adds 10.
Chiefs next play Petersburg, a 54-24 winner over No. 9 J.R. Tucker, in the region semifinals.

Petersburg (No. 4 in Metro) at Virginia Commonwealth University's Siegel Center |
L 49-50 |
Central Region tournament, semifinals. Monacan comes oh-so-close in its attempt to reach the finals and secure one of the region's two spots in the state tournament but can't get any of four shots to fall in the final minute.
Exciting, back-and-forth game in the early going between two of the area's top four teams, both entering with 22-3 records. Tied after one quarter, Petersburg takes the lead for good at 18-16 but never can quite pull away. Up only two points at halftime, the Wave scores the first seven points of the third quarter to go up by nine. On at least two other occasions, Petersburg leads by eight points. Chiefs have sporadic trouble stopping Isheena Flowers' inside shooting and Ebony Gibbs' slashing drives. But each time Monacan fights back to within a point or two, thanks to a tenacious team defense and three-point shooting by Jasmine Young and Courtney Dyer.
In the last minute, Chiefs have the ball on three separate possessions with a chance to take the lead but miss three hotly contested layup tries and a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer.
Heartbraking loss finishes the Chiefs season with a 22-4 record, their second best to the 23-4 record posted the region-winning team of 1993-94. Future looks even brighter: Of the eight Chiefs to play against Petersburg, one is a junior and seven are sophomores.
Young is named Central Region Player of the Year. Jade Morton is named Central Region honorable mention.
"Wave waits to exhale, walks off with a win" Richmond Times-Dispatch, 3/1.
