4 LEE-DAVIS W 81-26 No challenge at all for the No. 3-ranked Chiefs in first round of a new season-opening tournament, the North-South Classic. Monacan leads 23-4 after one quarter in cruising to 55-point win. Bench is emptied early. Four Chiefs (Dyer, Glenn, Morton, Young) score in double figures, while another five (McCarty, Bradt, McAllister, Fernald and Starr) score at least five points. Jennifer Saunders sits out with an injury; her sister, Carrie, was called up from JV for the tournament (and next week's tournament).
Chiefs advance to play No. 10-ranked Manchester, a 93-30 blowout winner over the Maggie Walker Governor's School.

  5 MANCHESTER
(No. 10 in Metro)
W 83-58 No. 3-ranked Chiefs jump on the No. 10 Lancers early and cruise to an easy victory in the semifinals of the inaugural North-South Classic, at Monacan.
Chiefs' tough defense slows Manchester's two scorers (until fourth-quarter "mop-up" time with game well in hand), and Monacan leads by 2-1 margins most of the game: 23-13 at the quarter, 47-25 at half, and 51-25 and 59-30 in the third quarter. Young paces the Chiefs with 21 points. Saunders, Dyer and Morton also score in double-figures.
Win sets up a match with No. 5-ranked Meadowbrook in the tournament's championship game.

  6 MEADOWBROOK
(No. 5 in Metro)
W 67-44 Chiefs win the North-South Classic championship, with another strong defensive outing that easily subdues a quality opponent.
No. 3 Monacan (3-0) jumps to a 33-9 lead over the No. 5 Monarchs (3-1) in the second quarter and cruise from there. Jasmine Young, who is forced out of the game 45 seconds into it with an ankle/foot injury, returns later in the first quarter and leads Monacan with 20 points. Other top scorers: Courtney Dyer (10), Jamie McAllister (9), Jennifer Saunders (8), Amanda Glenn (7) and Mandy Fernald (5). Saunders adds 10 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Meadowbrook's top scorers are held in check. Shelley Smith, averaging 23.0 a game, scores only 5 while being guarded mostly by McAllister. Crystal Lawrence, averaging 13.5, scores only 4 while being guarded by Saunders, McCarty and others.

  9 L.C. BIRD
(No. 7 in Metro)
W 48-37 No. 3-ranked Chiefs were playing first game without star point guard Jasmine Young, out for an indefinite time with a severely sprained foot. Monacan starts fast, though, jumping to leads of 12-2 and 16-6, as Jamie McAllister scores 8 points and Jade Morton 6 in the first quarter.
Monacan eventually builds its lead to 15 points in the third quarter. But Bird hangs tough and Monacan, with some fatigue setting in and Morton in foul trouble, is unable to make many shots in the second half. No. 7 Skyhawks cut the lead to 37-35. But Chiefs finish strong. First, Courtney Dyer answers with a three-pointer, then after Bird cuts the lead to 40-38, Jennifer Saunders answers with another. Chiefs score the last seven points of the game to seal the district win.
Morton and McAllister finish with 11 points each. Morton also has 11 rebounds. Dyer and Saunders add 7 points apiece. Simone Boyd blocks five shots.

    (No. 6 in Metro)
    at Prince George
W 70-52 No. 3 Chiefs play (and defeat) the fourth Top 10 team in succession, in the first round of the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament.
Henrico opens the game with a 3-pointer and, even though Monacan scores the next 10 points, trails by only three after a quarter. But Chiefs blitz the Warriors in the second quarter, scoring points in transition and by pounding the ball inside to Jade Morton, who displays a nifty shooting touch down low. When Monacan goes on an 11-2 run to start the second half, jumping to a 49-25 lead, the game is effectively over.
Morton scores 19 points and grabs 10 rebounds. Other scoring leaders: Audrey McCarty (11), Courtney Dyer (10), Jamie McAllister (8, plus 5 steals and 5 assists) and Jennifer Saunders (6). Simone Boyd adds three blocked shots.
Win sets up a semifinal match against another Top 10 team, No. 4 Douglas Freeman at Freeman.

L 34-51 Awful night for the 3rd-ranked and previously undefeated Chiefs in the semifinals of the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament.
Monacan takes leads of 4-0 and 6-5 before the No. 4 Rebels go on an 11-0 run. Playing their third game without point guard Jasmine Young, the Chiefs seem reluctant or unable to run against Freeman's tough defense. Jade Morton goes to the bench with foul trouble, limiting the inside scores. Meanwhile, on the other end of the court, Freeman sets multiple, hard picks to free up their shooters and leads by eight at halftime. Third quarter is even worse: Monacan scores only six points and Freeman pulls away. When the Rebels scores the first basket of the fourth quarter, they lead 45-25.
Monacan responds with its best play of the night, though, scoring nine straight points off its full-court defense and Courtney Dyer's aggressive offensive play. With the score 45-34, Freeman calls timeout, then goes on to score the last six points of the game.
Dyer is Monacan's leading scorer with 14 points. Jamie McAllister scores 10. The rest of the team combines for 10.
Chiefs play the tournament's third-place game against No. 5 Meadowbrook, an overtime loser to No. 1 Atlee.

  • 13 vs. Meadowbrook
    (No. 5 in Metro)
    at Univ. of Richmond
W 54-44 Chiefs rebound from disappointing loss to take third place in the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament.
Monacan jumps out to leads of 15-9 at the quarter and 21-11 early in the second quarter. Jamie McAllister goes down with hyperextended knee early in the second. Jade Morton also gets into foul trouble. Meadowbrook, which had narrowly lost to defending state champion Atlee in the previous night's semifinal, hangs tough on defense, getting a number of turnovers. Monacan maintains an ever-shrinking lead, though, with balanced scoring. Meadowbrook finally takes its only lead of the game at 34-33 late in the third quarter before Monacan scores the closing basket to go back on top.
McAllister re-enters the game in the fourth quarter, scoring 11 points on 4-for-4 shooting from the field. "We really needed her," Monacan coach Natalie White told the Times-Dispatch. "[Meadowbrook's] full court defense was very good." White also singled out Megan Starr, who stepped in after McAllister's injury. "I got on her case really hard [Friday] night at the game," White said. "She played the best game she's ever had. She showed that she's ready to play at this level."
Chiefs got seven or more points from six players: McAllister 13, Starr 9, Courtney Dyer 9, Jade Morton 9, Audrey McCarty 7, and Jennifer Saunders 7.
The game was Monacan's sixth in a row against a Top 10 team.

8 at George Wythe PPD Monacan-Wythe games of Thursday (girls) and Friday (boys) are postponed. "School officials mutually agreed to postpone the games because of the recent death of a Monacan student who was known in both communities," said Debra Q. Marlow, spokeswoman for Chesterfield County schools, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "Because of the conflict in those communities, we don't want it to come to school." No charges have been filed in the shooting death of Monacan student Elon Nelson, a 16-year-old who was killed at a South Richmond apartment Dec. 20. The girls game has been rescheduled for Feb. 9. A new date for the boys game has not been determined.
    13 at Midlothian
    (No. 9 in Metro)
W 69-53 Chiefs maintain a double-figure lead throughout most of the game but have to fight off a comeback try to defeat their archrivals.
Game appears headed for a blowout in the first quarter as Monacan goes up 12. Chiefs lead 28-14 in the second quarter, when Midlothian makes a charge that stretches into the third quarter. Using the defense and offense of point guard Stephanie Fernald, as well as some bad Monacan defense, Midlothian cuts the lead to 38-35. But Jasmine Young starts two fast breaks and Jamie McAllister follows with a three-point play and the Chiefs are back up 45-35. Monacan is never seriously threatened after that, building the advantage to 19 points in the fourth quarter behind Courtney Dyer and Jade Morton's scoring.
Dyer finishes with 19 point, Morton 15, McAllister 11 and Young 9. Win sets up a match with Manchester for the Dominion District lead. Both teams are undefeated, although Monacan defeated the Lancers in a non-district game earlier.

  • 15 MANCHESTER
    (No. 6 in Metro)
    W 76-73
    (2 OT)
WOW! A game for the ages. Or as the Richmond Times-Dispatch put it: "High school basketball games - boys or girls - don't get any better than the show put on by Manchester and Monacan." No. 3 Monacan commits numerous turnovers and looks to have lost the game to No. 6 Manchester several times. But before a large screaming crowd, the never-say-die Chiefs come back to win 76-73 in double overtime -- having reached the second OT on Jamie McAllister's dramatic 3-pointer -- and take over the Dominion District lead. Four Chiefs score in double figures, led by Jasmine Young's 21 points.
Both teams were undefeated in the district (Manchester 5-0, Monacan 4-0) and Lancers came in clearly ready to upset the Chiefs. Monacan, perhaps remembering its easy 25-point non-conference win in December, is beaten in every phase of the game as Manchester jumps to an 18-11 lead. But when Monacan scores the final 10 points of the first quarter, order seems to have been restored.
Hardly. Instead, it was game on. Lancers' trapping defense continues forcing point guard Young into turnovers with numerous double- and triple-teams. Manchester bolts to a four-point lead at halftime and a 10-point lead (35-25) in the third quarter. Chiefs get back into the game with Young's slashing scores and Courtney Dyer's clutch 3-pointers. Each of Dyers bombs seem to come at a key moment. Biggest key may have been Monacan's defense, though, particularly McAllister's second-half checking of Lindsay Biggs and Audrey McCarty's work on Jessica Naquin, slowing down the district's top two scorers.
Dyer's shots and some inside scoring by Jade Morton help propel the game into overtime, although both teams miss chances to win in regulation. Manchester goes up by four and still leads by three as the clock ticks down. McAllister gets the ball on the wing in front of the Monacan bench, launches a dramatic three-pointer -- and banks it in. The Monacan crowd and team goes berzerk. ("The game was winding down, and we had worked so hard. I let go and hoped it would go in," McAllister told the Times-Dispatch afterward. A bank shot? "Of course, I called it," she joked.)
In the second OT, Manchester scores first. McAllister responds with a steal and basket to tie; Manchester's Naquin goes down with leg cramps on the play and has to leave the game. Amanda Glenn and Young follow with baskets to put Monacan on top 74-70. Naquin returns in the final minute but Manchester can't generate enough offense. Biggs' desperation three-pointer at the buzzer is off-target, as Monacan fans storm the court.
"Wow!" Monacan coach Natalie White tells the Times-Dispatch before taking a long swig from a water bottle. "That was like an out-of-body experience. That was a great game. That was a playoff game. I think both teams are better than they were two hours and 10 minutes ago. . . . I think (Manchester's) defense and intensity was unbelievable. I said they couldn't play this hard the whole game. I was waiting for them to lose intensity, and they didn't."
Young leads Monacan's scoring parade with 21 points, followed by Dyer (14), Morton (13), McAllister (12) and McCarty (9).
White told the newspaper: "It came down to the ball bouncing our way. How many times do you bank a 3-pointer let alone bank one to tie the game? And unfortunately, one of the best players in the region went down in overtime." Manchester coach Jerry Gibbs: "Somebody had to lose. If that shot (McAllister's 3) hadn't gone in, we win. I told Natalie that I'd make a deal with her. We could play a hundred games like this and you can win 50 and I can win 50. We know we have to beat Monacan to get the top seed in the district. We're not conceding anything."
Round 2: Feb. 10 at Manchester.

    (No. 5 in Metro)
W 80-64 No. 3 Chiefs may have been leg-weary after last night's draining game with Manchester but they easily handle No. 5 Meadowbrook for their third win this week against Top 10 teams.
Monacan leads 22-11 after one quarter and 72-42 deep into the third before late Meadowbrook scores make the non-district game seem closer than it was.
Eleven Chiefs score on the night, including three with at least 14 points: Jamie McAllister 19 (on 7-for-8 shooting), Courtney Dyer 15 (including three 3-pointers) and Jasmine Young 14 (plus six assists and seven steals).

Jessica Bradt scores 20 points, Court Dyer scores 16, Young adds 14 (with 7 assists) and Jamie McAllister has 9 before going out with a rolled-ankle injury early in the second half. Jade Morton, resting a calf injury, sits out for a second game.

    (No. 7 in Metro)
W 67-35 Senior Night brings out one of Monacan's sharpest games. No 2-ranked Chiefs jump to early leads of 11-0 and 16-1. Great team defense and offensive fast breaks, highlighted by some fine passing by point guard Jasmine Young and others, keep Monacan in control throughout.
Four Chiefs score in double figures: Young 13, Courtney Dyer 11, Jennifer Saunders 11, and Jade Morton 10. Morton, the lone starting senior, returns for a fine Senior Night performance after two games off to heal a calf injury. Defensive stopper Jamie McAllister, hobbled by an ankle injury and foul trouble, plays little and will miss the next two games for the injury.

W 70-58 No. 2-ranked Chiefs win easily after struggling in this game of spurts. Monacan, trailing by one point, scores 11 straight behind the shooting of Courtney Dyer and Jasmine Young to go up 22-12, seeming on the way to a rout. But lackluster defense, including a Bird four-point play as time expired in the first half, left the Chiefs ahead only 30-27 at half.
Usual starters Jade Morton and Jamie McAllister had been sitting out the game to rest injuries but they were inserted into the game to start the second half. Chiefs used McAllister's full-court defense and Young's offense to go on a 13-0 run, holding the Skyhawks scoreless for 4-1/2 minutes. Monacan eventually built up a 20-point lead before turning the game over to the bench.
Four Chiefs were in double figures: Young 16, Dyer 12, Audrey McCarty 10, and Jennifer Saunders 10.
The 16-1 Chiefs remain undefeated in Dominion District play (10-0) but the big news of the night was the 82-80 loss by their closest challenger, Manchester, to Huguenot. Manchester is now 10-2 in the district.

    10 at Manchester
    (No. 4 in Metro)
W 66-55 Chiefs clinch second-straight Dominion District championship by defeating second-place Manchester in front of one of the largest girls basketball crowds in recent years.
Though not quite as exciting as Monacan's double-OT win in their first district matchup, this game comes close.
Monacan comes out running, scoring almost at will off the fast break, and excites the large group of Monacan fans in building leads of 24-12 (at the end of the first quarter) and 35-20 (midway through the second quarter. Manchester makes a slight run to get the deficit back to 9 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Manchester and its fans climb back into the action. Monacan goes with a bigger but slower lineup when Jamie McAllister has to leave the game with her reinjured ankle and Jade Morton stays in the game but limps noticeably with her calf injury. Manchester takes advantage and cuts the deficit all the way down to 1 point, 43-42, late in the quarter.
In the final quarter, though, Monacan re-establishes control. Morton has to leave the game but Audrey McCarty steps in, McAllister returns with an ankle re-taping and the Chiefs are able to play keep-away. Point guard Jasmine Young runs the spread offense, using Courtney Dyer and McAllister as primary outlets. Manchester, which ran its trapping defense effectively in the teams' last meeting, this time ends up giving up baskets and Chiefs slowly pull away.
Young and McAllister lead Monacan scorers with 17 points apiece. Jennifer Saunders plays a solid game and contributes 11. Morton scores 10 before having to leave. Dyer, part of the three-guard running attack in the first half and the three-guard keep-away in the final quarter, scores 7 but also has to leave with a toe injury in the final minutes.
Win secures the district's No. 1 seed in the Central Region tournament, regardless of what first happens in the Central District tournament.

  • 12 at Huguenot L 52-53 Unranked Huguenot upsets the No. 2-ranked Chiefs on a shot by April Robinson at the buzzer in the regular-season finale.
Technically, it was a meaningless game but the District-winning Chiefs had hoped to finish the regular season 20-1. Instead, they got caught in a roughly-played, loosely-called game with the physical Falcons. Chiefs, who were playing their eighth game in 11 days, looked sluggish but nonetheless led most of the game, once by 10, but usually only by a couple. Up by five points with 2 minutes to go, Monacan went to its spread offense and seemed to have the game won. But Chiefs missed every foul shot down the stretch and had a miscommunication on an inbounds pass that led to a turnover.
Jasmine Young scores 20 in the loss, with three assists. Audrey McCarty scores 9 (on 4-for-6 shooting). Jamie McAllister scores 8 and adds 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Jennifer Saunders scores 7 (1-for-1 on 3-pointers) and pulls down 5 rebounds. Courtney Dyer hits two 3-pointers for her six points. But the most unusual stat line of the night had to be Simone Boyd's; she almost had a double-double while scoring only 2 points: 9 rebounds and a whopping 10 blocked shots.
The most discouraging stats of the night: Monacan was 3 for 11 from the foul line (the seemingly more physical Falcons were 9 of 16) and committed 21 turnovers (to Huguenot's 17).
Jade Morton sat out the game with a continuing calf injury.
District playoffs begin next week, with Dominion #1 seed Monacan hosting #8 Wythe. The Chiefs have already qualified for the following week's Central Region tournament as well.

W 53-47 Sluggish game for Chiefs in the Dominion District Tournament semifinals at L.C. Bird but still a win that advances them to the finals against Manchester.
#1 seed Chiefs lead most of the game against #5 Bird but never can pull away. Monacan's one-on-one play and ice-cold shooting keep the Skyhawks in the game in the first half. Chiefs come out stronger in the second half and build leads ranging from 4 to 8 points. Monacan goes to the four-corners spread offense in the fourth corner, getting easy penetration from Jasmine Young and Courtney Dyer that lead to scores. In the final minutes, Monacan's lead goes to 50-38 and seems secure. But Bird scores eight straight points to move within four again before Chiefs close out the win. Young scores 17 points (with 6 assists) and Dyer scores 15. Jade Morton reinjures a continuing calf injury.

    at L.C. Bird
W 53-32 Probably one of the No. 3-ranked Chiefs' best wins of the season -- and clearly one of their best defensive efforts -- coming in Dominion District Tournament finals. #1 seed Monacan dominates #2 Manchester defensively in winning their fourth time in four games against the Lancers this season.
Win run Monacan's record to 22-2, tying last year's win total (22-4) and coming within one of the region-winning team of 1993-94 (23-4).
Chiefs never trail. Monacan passes well to beat the Manchester press, often making the Lancers pay by getting easy layups. Point guard Jasmine Young (11 points) and post player Audrey McCarty (10), in off the bench early, lead the offense.
But the name of the game this night is defense and the Chiefs excel in their tight man-to-man. High-scoring Jessica Naquin is held to three points by a rotation of Jamie McAllister, McCarty and Jennifer Saunders. Lindsay Biggs, checked much of the night by Courtney Dyer, is only 4-of-18 from the field. Chiefs lead 29-21 at halftime but the game effectively ends in the third quarter when Monacan gives up just 4 points. For the full second half, Manchester scores just 11.
"They're much too tough. We put in special sets for them, but they are better than we are," Manchester coach Jerry Gibbs tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch later. "Their defense doesn't give you a break," Gibbs said. "They're fundamentally sound and physically strong.
Monacan coach Natalie White tells the paper: ""We played great defense. "We know they have a couple of players who can flat out score. We started out with Courtney [on Biggs] and Jamie [on Naquin], but we got into some foul trouble. Whoever we used to guard them did a great job."
Jade Morton sits out with a continuing calf injury.

    (No. 10 in Metro)
W 57-43 Chiefs set the school's all-time win record and, more important, advance to the semifinals of Central Region Tournament with a an easy-difficult-easy win over the #2 Colonial District seed Hermitage.
The last game of the year at Monacan gives fans three games for the price of one:
--Game 1, a Monacan blowout: Chiefs use suffocating defense and Jasmine Young (playing with a knee injury) and Jamie McAllister on the fast break to jump to an almost startling 17-0 lead. Panthers do not even score for more than 6 minutes of the game.
--Game 2, a Hermitage blowout: Starting late in the first quarter and continuing until early in the fourth, Hermitage staggers the Chiefs, outscoring them 36-18. Hermitage actually takes a 36-35 lead until ...
--Game 3, a Monacan blowout: Chiefs put on the full-court press, getting countless traps and steals from Young, McAllister, Audrey McCarty, plus Courtney Dyer and Jennifer Saunders, and conclude the game with a 22-7 run. After Monacan gets the lead, it is Jennifer Saunders who helps keep it. Fouled on four occasions by the desperate Panthers, Saunders makes each of her eight free throws (and has 10 points for the quarter). Saunders is the leader of an encouraging 11-for-12 team performance at the line in the fourth quarter.
Young leads Monacan with 19 points, while Saunders adds 14. McAllister (9), McCarty (8) and Dyer (5) follow.
Win runs the Chiefs record to 24-2, ahead of the 1993-94 team that finished 23-4. That team won the Central Region, however, something the Chiefs will need two more wins to accomplish.
Next up: defending state champion Atlee. Winner will qualify for the state tournament. Loser's season is ended.

    (No. 4 in Metro)
    at VCU Siegel Center
W 53-33 STATES! Chiefs advance to the Central Region finals -- and qualify for the state tournament -- with a semifinal win over defending state champion Atlee.
Not surprisingly, game is a death struggle for three quarters. Elimination game means winner will qualify for states and loser will see their season end. Neither the disciplined defending state champion Atlee, ranked No. 4 in the region, nor the talented No. 3 Monacan can shake the other. Atlee leads by two after a quarter, Monacan leads by one at halftime, Monacan still leads by one after three quarters. Chiefs' man-to-man defense makes every possession an adaventure for Atlee. The Raiders run most of their offense through Narissa Suber, first-team all-state and Metro player of the year last season. But Jamie McAllister frustrates her continually, denying her the ball, getting steals and forcing off-balance shots. Suber who hit five 3-pointers in the regional quarterfinals, hits none. When she does get free on one of Atlee's numerous screens, Monacan's help defense usually picks her up quickly.
Meanwhile, Monacan's offense is slowed down also by Atlee's deliberate game. Chiefs get balanced scoring from everybody but can't get very much from anybody until the fourth quarter. After Monacan's lead is stretched to several points, Coach White sends the Chiefs into their "four corners" offense, designed to take time off the clock and to get easy layups if the defense over-commits on point guard Jasmine Young. Atlee is no match for the lightning-quick Young, who takes over the game by escaping repeatedly and getting the ball to Jennifer Saunders, Audrey McCarty, Courtney Dyer and Amanda Glenn for layups. As a result, Chiefs go 7-of-8 from the floor in the fourth quarter (after going 11 for 31 before). Dyer also hits a key three-pointer. Atlee, forced to foul in the closing minutes, sends Young to the line repeatedly and she responds by hitting 6 of 6 in the quarter.
Nail-bitingly close game becomes a blowout. For the evening, Young scores 11 of her 15 points from the line. Dyer (8), Saunders (8), McAllister (7), McCarty (5), Boyd (4), and Glenn (4) also contribute to the balanced scoring. Injured center Jade Morton returns to the court, playing limited minutes and scoring a basket. Defensively, Monacan holds Atlee to single digits in every quarter.
Call it an every-decade thing: The 2003-04 Chiefs become the third Monacan girls team to reach the Central Region finals, following the 1983-84 team (61-56 loss to Marshall-Walker) and 1993-94 team (63-62, triple overtime win over Midlothian).

    at VCU Siegel Center
W 77-60 Central Region Tournament finals. No. 3-ranked Chiefs steadily pull away from No. 1-ranked Petersburg in winning their second region championship in school history.
Jasmine Young scores 30 and runs the offense to near-perfection in leading the Chiefs to victory 10 years after their only other title.
Monacan falls behind early, though, and the game is tight until mid-way through the second quarter. Courtney Dyer's four 3-pointers each seem to come at a key moment, either keeping Chiefs close or putting them ahead. For the first half, Dyer scores 14 points and Young scores 15, including her 1,000th career point, which comes on a free throw in the closing seconds of the first half. Simone Boyd, who had scored the game's first points on free throws, also takes a couple of lob passes, then pivots and converts for baskets.
Important, too, is the defense played on Petersburg's star players: Jamie McAllister on Central Region Player of the Year Tara Robinson, Jennifer Saunders on All-Region Isheena Flowers, Young on Ebony Gibbs and Dyer on Ernesta Green. Crimson Wave has had a season of one or more of those players having explosive games but none can get untracked against the Chiefs. Even when one was able to get free and penetrate, there was Boyd to block or alter a shot, including several against Robinson.
Meanwhile, Chiefs are playing team ball. Third quarter continues as the second with Chiefs working the ball for better shots than their counterparts. Monacan again has two double-digit scorers in the second half: Young again, with another 15 points, and McAllister with 11. Young's quick drivers and pull-up jumpers especially seem to frustrate the Wave. And Chiefs' solid defense continues: high-scoring Petersburg gets only 11 points each in the second and third quarters. Chiefs lead by 14 to start the final quarter and build the lead to 21 (64-43) midway through the quarter. Petersburg begins a mini-run but can get no closer than 14 points.
Young's 30 points are the highlight but other Chiefs chip in with balanced scoring, including: Dwyer 17 points, McAllister 11, Saunders 7, Boyd 7.
Chiefs now advance to the eight-team, single-elimination State Group AAA tournament. They host a home-area (Hanover H.S.) game Saturday against Indian River.

Chiefs, who won more games than any team in school history and reached the state tournament for the first time in a decade, are bounced from the tournament by Indian River, the Eastern Region runnerup.
Chiefs are dominated on the boards by the bigger, strong Braves, who also set a playoff record for blocked shots, with either 14 (according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch) or 18 (according to the Norfolk Virginan-Pilot). Indian River's post players attack Monacan's shot attempts so ferociously -- sometimes drawing fouls, sometimes not -- that Monacan's shooting touch begins faltering as well.
Game opens with drives to the basket by Jamie McAllister and Jasmine Young, both of whom score and draw fouls, although (in a harbinger for the rest of the evening) both miss their foul shots. Those baskets lead to a 4-2 Monacan lead but the rest of the evening does not go as well. Chiefs trail only 12-9 after one quarter. But giving up two and three rebounds at a time and rarely getting any of its own, Monacan is barely able to scratch in the second quarter and trails 26-14 at halftime.
Indian River quickly pushes out to a 34-18 lead in the third quarter. But Courtney Dyer hits Monacan's only three-pointer of the evening mid-way through the quarter, then McAllister follows with a driving layup to cut the lead to 34-23. The five straight points momentarily give the Chiefs hope again, but a 12-1 Indian River run to end the quarter effectively decides the game.
Indian River's Kelli Darden, who had nine blocked shots and 14 rebounds, told the Times-Dispatch: "It was timing. When I didn't get my timing, I picked up fouls." Indian River coach Gavin Harris said: "We wanted to establish our defense. We wanted to challenge all shots."
Monacan coach Natalie White told the paper: "They caused a lot of turnovers. They blocked so many shots. We weren't hitting our free throws. I didn't feel like we were turning and boxing. They were just ferocious on the boards."
McAllister and Dyer lead Monacan with nine points apiece. The team's 36 points were its fewest since an early-season 51-34 loss to Douglas Freeman; those were the only games the Chiefs did not score at least 48.

The disappointing outcome temporarily obscures a remarkable season for the Chiefs. Monacan won only its second Central Region title in 25 years of existence. Its 26-3 record was its best ever. And the future looks even more promosing: Monacan returns 11 of its 13 players next year.

    from the Richmond Times-Dispatch

  • Last season: 13-1, 22-4
  • Key players: Jade Morton, 6-1, Sr., C/F; Jasmine Young, 5-5, Jr., G; Jamie McAllister, 5-9, Jr., G.
  • Outlook: The Chiefs are one of the top teams in the region with 10 returning players and only two seniors among them. Despite her size, Young can take over a game. When Morton establishes position down low, she's nearly unstoppable. McAllister and Courtney Dyer capably fill whatever role is needed.
  • Notes & Achievements
    * 12/11/03: Junior point guard Jasmine Young named Richmond Times-Dispatch Player of the Week following 51 points, 18 assists and 12 steals in three-game North-South Classic, which Chiefs won.
    * 1/22/04: Junior guard Jamie McAllister named Times-Dispatch Player of the Week for defensive play and averaging 14 points in three wins over Top 10 teams. Hit buzzer-beating 3-pointer to send Manchester game into a second overtime.
    * 2/11/04: Chiefs clinch second straight Dominion District championship by defeating second-place Manchester 66-55.
    * 3/1/04: Chiefs win Central Region championship by defeating Petersburg 76-60.

Although Manchester picks up the pace in the third and outscores the Chiefs, Monacan holds its lead to start the fourth quarter.
