Top-ranked Chiefs jump to an early 10-point lead but let it dwindle to three at halftime, then twice fall behind by three points before going on an explosive 32-9 run to win going away.
Comeback against the physical Skyhawks, ranked No. 5 in the region, is fueled by Monacan's tough team defense and scoring from Young (19 points for the game) and McAllister (18). McAllister also has 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Starr chips in 8 points and Glenn, 7. J.Saunders and Gibson again miss with inuries.

MEADOWBROOK (No. 3 in Region) |
W 97-38 |
Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament semifinals.
WOW! Chiefs turn in a record-breaking performance in thoroughly dominating previously underfeated Monarchs. Monacan's 97 points are the best in the 10-year-tournament's history, breaking Midlothian's 1999 record of 86. Midlothian's 3-game record of 213 (set in 2000) is also in jeopardy; Chiefs have 166 heading into Monday's championship game against Manchester.
No. 1-ranked Monacan's suffocating team defense leads to a 17-0 opening, despite two Meadowbrook timeouts to try to stop the momentum. Young's ballhandling and passing, McAllister's defense on scoring star Shelley Smith, and Boyd's inside dominance leave few options for the Monarchs. Monacan exploits Meadowbrook's man-to-man defense to lead by 30 at half and, despite an early bench-clearing, by as many as 62 in the closing minutes.
Chiefs have five players in double-figures scoring: Young 17, Dyer 13, Glenn 13, McAllister 12, and Robinson 12.
"We keep our heads in the game," Young tells the Times-Dispatch afterward.
"We never let up. That one second you let up, the other team could get its composure and get back in it. ... Our intensity on defense enabled us to score on offense. Everybody is focused on where we're trying to go."
McAllister added: "We were playing really good defense, and it seemed like we were hitting all our shots."
Dyer agreed: "Our defensive intensity was definitely the difference. As Coach White says, we have to keep our intensity and never let up. It's what carries you far."

CHAMPIONS! Chiefs win the Times-Dispatch Invitational Tournament, pulling away from their biggest rivals late in the second quarter and maintaining the lead through the second half at Virginia Commonwealth University's Siegel Center.
Both teams play sluggishly throughout. Teams are tied 19-19 late in the second quarter when Chiefs go on a 12-2 run to finish the half. Run is spurred by two 3-pointers by Starr, who comes off the bench to hit five -- all swishes, all in the first half -- to match the tournament record for a full game. Manchester, the region's No. 2 team, never seriously threatens in the second half despite Chiefs' cold shooting, especially from the line. Lead stays between eight and 14 points throughout the half. Monacan sets the three-game tournament scoring record with 220 points, best Midlothian's 213 of 2000.
Starr finishes with 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Young, named tournament MVP, scores 13 with 8 assists. Dyer, named to the all-tournament team with Young, adds 9 points. McAllister scores 8, and J.Saunders scores 5 to account for all Monacan's scoring.
"I guess I was just in a zone," Starr tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch afterward. "I've only been on one part of the season. I guess it came back. This was a good game for it to come back. ... We knew that Manchester was going to be a tough game. They came out strong. They knew they could compete with us and they did."
Young adds: "It shows that we still have a lot of work to do. They put their halfcourt press on us. We just didn't recognize it in order to get into our breaker to break their press. We were still trying to run a regular halfcourt offense."
Manchester, who most observers believe is the only local team with a strong chance to beat the Chiefs, will play them at least two more times and more likely three or four.

FORT WALTON BEACH, FLA. --Chiefs pull away in the final minutes to defeat Kentucky's No. 9 team in the opening round of the Southern Resorts Beach Blowout tournament.
Chiefs come out playing nearly to perfect, taking an early lead on the passing of Young and the scoring of Dyer and J.Saunders. Monacan builds the lead to 36-18 shortly before halftime. Elizabethtown scores the final five points of the half, though, including a three-pointer at the buzzer, to pull to within 13.
Elizabethtown slowly whittles the lead in the third quarter, particularly after Young goes to the bench with her fourth foul. McAllister takes over the scoring duties from Dyer and Saunders, and the Chiefs stay in front. Young returns for 50 seconds in the fourth quarter before picking up her fifth foul, which helps Elizabethtown cut the lead to 62-60 with 2:55 remaining.
But Chiefs, who were outscored at the free-throw line, take control in the final two minutes -- by going 8-for-8 at the line. Starr goes 4-for-4, J.Saunders 2-for-2, and McAllister 2-for-2 with a layup thrown in.
For the game, Dyer scores 17, McAllister 15 (14 in the second half) and Saunders 11. Young finishes with 10 points, eight assists and three steals.

FORT WALTON BEACH, FLA. -- Dyer's shot at the buzzer beats host-team Fort Walton Beach, ranked No. 12 statewide among Florida's 5A teams, and Monacan advances to the finals of the Southern Resorts Beach Blowout tournament in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.
Chiefs knock off another top Southern team but it isn't easy. Monacan looks to be taking early control of the battle between two superb defense teams, leading 12-7 late in the first quarter and 23-16 at halftime. But Fort Walton turns up the defense even more in the second half, pulling to within 30-28 with 6:30 left in the game, driving the gymful of hometown fans into a frenzy.
Monacan, clearly fatigued, goes into a freeze as point guard Young holds the ball near midcourt for 3-1/2 minutes. Fort Walton Beach finally comes out to challenge, the Chiefs attack -- and immediately commit a turnover. FWB runs its offense for two minutes, unable to score. Starr steals the ball, drives for a basket and is fouled, making one free thrown. But FWB scores on a two-point goal and a foul with 58.8 seconds remaining, tying the game at 31. Chiefs hold for the last shot, getting the ball knocked out of bounds on the baseline with 2.6 seconds remaining. Chiefs inbound to Dyer who fakes a three-pointer, drives to near the foul line and puts in the leaning jumper to win as the gym dramatically goes silent.
Afterward, FWB coach defends her decision (to the Northwest Florida Daily News) not to attack Monacan's stall immediately, saying she was comfortable her team would get a stop and it did. She also says Dyer's game-winning shot was well-defended but the shot was "awesome".
Young finishes with 14 points to lead the Chiefs, adding four assists and four steals. McAllister is next with 8 points and a strong defensive game. Only three other Chiefs score: Dyer with 5 points, Starr with 4 and J.Saunders with 2.

FORT WALTON BEACH, FLA. -- CHAMPIONS AGAIN! Chiefs jump to an early 21-point lead, then hold on to take their second tournament in 10 days, winning the prestigious Southern Resorts Beach Blowout tournament in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.
Hot-starting Chiefs take a 30-9 lead, running offense to near perfection and playing typically strong defense. Boyd is particularly strong defensively on Winter Park's athletic 6-foot forward.
Chiefs surrender nine straight points to Winter Park late in the first half, though, and Winter Park cuts the lead to 34-25 in the third quarter. But a Monacan timeout precedes six straight Monacan points, restoring a 15-point lead and Winter Park can never cut the deficit to fewer than 12 the rest of the way.
Dyer leads the Chiefs with 19 points. McAllister has 11 (plus 7 steals and 5 assists) and J.Saunders has 10. All 15 Chiefs see action.
Young, who was hounded by a rotation of physical Winter Park defenders, is named tournament's Most Valuable Player. Young and McAllister are named to the All-Tournament Team.
The tournament championship comes just 10 days after the Chiefs won the Times-Dispatch Invitational. The Beach Blowout is the same tournament won two years ago by Central Region rival Atlee -- which went on to win the state championship.

MEADOWBROOK (No. 8 in Region) |
W 106-44 |
Top-ranked Chiefs have one of their highest-scoring games of all time against the run-and-gun Monarchs.
Though Meadowbrook ranks in the region's Top 10, its Defense Lite is unable to even slow the Chiefs, who maintain a 3-1 advantage throughout the game as substitutes fill the floor early.
Biggest moment for the fans comes at with 3:40 in the game as Fernald banks in a short jumper to push Monacan over the 100-point mark. Chiefs actually open a 70-point lead at 106-36, but Meadowbrook's leading scorer, who plays the entire game, gets three steals and scores the last eight points of the game.
Meanwhile, Monacan puts a whopping six players in double figures: Young 19, Dyer 15, McCarty 15, McAllister 13, Robinson 12, J.Saunders 10. Young (13 assists) and Saunders (11 rebounds) get double-doubles. Six players show off even more of the Chiefs' depth by hitting 3-pointers.

at Manchester (No. 2 in Region) |
W 65-45 |
The matchup of the Dominion District's and Central Region's top 2 teams quickly is decided by something Chiefs have and Manchester doesn't this night -- defensive dominance.
Monacan puts an early stranglehold on the home team with McAllister picking up Manchester star Lindsay Biggs full-court and all the Chiefs trapping and offering strong help defense, particularly Boyd inside. By halftime, Biggs has only six points and the entire Manchester team, making 4 of 25 shots from the field, has a nearly unthinkable total of just 12 points.
Meanwhile, No. 1 Monacan steadily builds the lead with its fast-break offense. Point guard Young's attack begins with a three-pointer moments into the game -- and then Chiefs get a defensive three-second call. Manchester pulls to within 6-4 as the large crowd screams. But Monacan scores the next eight points to go up 14-4 as Lancers start to recede in the rear-view mirror.
By halftime, the score is 23-12. When Young banks in a 3-pointer as the third-quarter buzzer sounds, Chiefs lead 44-25. And when Dyer hits two three-pointers midway through the fourth quarter, Monacan has the game's largest lead at 56-32. Chiefs substitute, and Manchester closes the gap a little but not much.
For the game, McAllister (18), Young (17) and Dyer (12) combine for 47 points.
"Clearly [Biggs] is a dominant player, so we had to get out there on her," McAllister tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch afterward. "I guess in a game like this you don't get tired. Your adrenaline is just going. ... You saw the crowd. This is the game everybody comes to see. Play hard and put everything out there. You don't want to walk off the court regretting anything."
Monacan coach Natalie White tells the paper: "Sometimes it's a lot harder to run your set offense even if you know you're going to have that pressure. Jamie is our defensive player. She loves the challenge. [Biggs] tends to score a lot more early in the game. So I really wanted to try to wear down Lindsay's legs. There are not many players that have the offensive talent that Lindsay has."
Manchester's Jessica Naquin made it clear Monacan's overall defense was also key: ""They played really good man-to-man defense. It makes it really hard to run our offense. We have to find out a way to get everybody involved in the offense. We can't have it all on one person to do it. You think you have an open lane, and all of a sudden you see two more Monacan players step up and you're like freaked out."

L.C. BIRD (No. 5 in Metro/Region) |
W 56-41 |
No. 1 Chiefs pull away from No. 5 Skyhawks in matchup of two of the region's best defensive teams -- if not the two best.
J.Saunders' scores five points early but Chiefs otherwise struggle against Bird's aggressive 2-3 zone defefense. Monacan leads only 6-5 after more than 7 minutes before McAllister scores on a three-point shot and Young adds an old-fashioned three-point play as Chiefs end quarter with a 14-7 lead.
Bird's physical defense and loose officiating combine with some poor Monacan decision-making and shooting mis-fires to keep the score down. But Monacan's tenacious man-to-man defense and Bird's own bad shooting combine to allow the Chiefs to slowly extend their lead, anyway. Monacan leads by 10 at halftime, by 15 at the end of three quarters, and by as much as 23 (46-23) in the final quarter.
Young finishes with 21 points, with 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Remainder of Monacan's scoring is distributed: J.Saunders 10, Dyer 7, McAllister 6, Glenn 6, Boyd 6.

No. 1 Chiefs (and No. 2 in the season's first statewide poll) come out firing on way to easy win. Monacan's suffocating defense and Dyer's three quick 3-pointers put Chiefs up 16-4 after five minutes; five subs come in and stretch the lead to 21-6 at the quarter break.
Playing time distributed throughout the game. Dyer leads with 19 points, including five-of-seven from 3-point range, and Glenn adds 14. Young (9) and McAllister (8) also score more than any Clover Hill player (6).

No. 1-ranked Chiefs (No. 2 in the state), perhaps looking ahead to regional No. 2 Manchester, open up sluggishly -- and still take a 19-2 lead en route to an easy win.
Chiefs get numerous turnovers, Young scores early points attacking the basket, and Boyd scores by posting up the smaller Midlo team, as Monacan takes a 20-point lead after one quarter. Lead reaches 37 by the end of three quarters.

MANCHESTER (No. 2 in Metro/Region, No. 9 in State) |
W 59-54 |
Were it not for Monacan, people would be talking about Manchester as if it were Monacan. For the third time this season, the undefeated, No. 1-ranked (and No. 2 in the state) Chiefs face the otherwise-undefeated, No. 2-ranked (and No. 9 in the state) Lancers before a large crowd -- and defeat them.
Intensity characterizes this game from the outset before a near-capacity crowd in the hot-and-humid, 1,100-seat Monacan gym. Both teams show defensive toughness, Manchester paying special attention to Monacan star Young, and McAllister locking down full-court on Lancer star Lindsay Biggs. Both teams are held to single figures in the first quarter but Monacan ends with a lead it will never relinquish.
Chiefs then use Young's attacks on the basket and Dyer's outside shooting (she will hit four 3-pointers in the game) to stretch the lead to 11 points at halftime. In the second half, both teams weary from the intensity and heat. Several players develop leg cramps. But Monacan's superior depth -- eight Chiefs see substantial playing time -- helps build a 44-29 lead with two minutes to go in the third quarter.
Monacan goes to its usually reliable "four corners" spread offense but team becomes less aggressive this time. Monacan turnovers, missed shots and missed free throws let Manchester back in the game. Over the next four minutes, Lancers go on a 12-2 run to pull to within 46-41.
But five points is as close as Manchester will get. Young hits a 3-pointer to take it back to eight and Chiefs pull out the game, Young, Dyer, McAllister and Starr getting key points down the stretch.
Both teams will look back on their free throw woes. Manchester, which could have won the game, made only 8 of 26 free throws. Monacan, which could have cruised to an easy win, made only 7 of 19 (although Starr hit 3 of 4 in the closing minutes).
Young finishes with 21 points, followed by Dyer (14), McAllister (10) and Starr (7).
"They were playing with more heart and intensity than we were," Young tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch afterward. "We slacked off and sat on the lead, and they got back in the game. We were tired, dragging, and sluggish. People cramped up. Bodies were aching. Then, we decided we wanted to win more than they did."
Monacan coach Natalie White tells the paper: "We play a lot of games where we win very easily so we need games like this with a playoff atmosphere. We know games will be tight in the playoffs, and we need to hold on to a lead and hold off teams that are making runs at us. This will definitely help us."
Win effectively wraps up the Dominion District title, although technically Chiefs need to win one of two remaining games to clinch (or be helped by a Manchester loss).

It's official: Monacan wins its third straight Dominion District championship.
Victory over Manchester the night before had made it all but official, though technically only securing a tie for the title (and a playoff would have been required). But Monacan wins the championship -- and an automatic spot in the Central Region playoffs -- with an easy victory.
Third game in three nights is somewhat sluggish. Even so, Rapids can only score in single figures in three quarters against the Chiefs' defense.
Young (17 points), Dyer (14), McAllister (9) and C.Saunders (7) lead scoring. Nine Chiefs score at least 4 points.

vs. Manchester (No. 2 in Metro) at L.C. Bird |
L 39-53 |
DOMINION DISTRICT FINALS: Thump! No. 2 ranked Manchester (No. 9 state) ends the 23-game winning streak of unbeaten Monacan (No. 1 region and state), winning the Dominion District Tournament in the process.
Regular-season champion Chiefs (23-1) had beaten Lancers three straight -- and nine straight over the past three years -- but it was clear from the outset that Manchester (20-3) wanted this one more.
Lancers jump to early 15-6 lead, Chiefs' biggest deficit of the season up to that point. Monacan, working the ball inside to Boyd against the Lancers' 2-3 zone, cuts the lead to 24-20 at the half. But two telltale signs had sprung up: a shortage of guards (All-District McAllister on bench much of the game with foul trouble, All-District Dyer on bench much of the game with ankle injury, Starr on bench much of the game with an illness) and a shortage of "want-to" (Manchester would be tougher on the boards and quicker to loose balls most of the night).
District Player of the Year Young hits a 3-pointer to open the third quarter and cut the Lancer lead to one point. Chiefs several times get back to within one point but never regain the lead. Lancer lead is five points after three quarters and reaches double figures in the closing minutes as Chiefs are forced to foul.
Young scores 12 points, despite being the focus of Manchester's defense and despite having to take over the wearying chore of guarding All-District Lindsay Biggs. (Biggs and fellow All-District Lancer Melanie Oliver combine for 39 points of Manchester's 53.) Boyd adds eight for the Chiefs.
Times-Dispatch, in a section-front article under a large "Might finally fall" headline, quotes Manchester coach Jerry Gibbs: "Usually when we play, Monacan is the hammer, and we're the nail. Tonight, we were the hammer. ... We came into the game with three defenses to play against them. We never got out of the first one. It was so effective. It was a joy to watch."
Monacan coach Natalie White tells the paper: "I don't think we took what they were giving us. We took 16 3-pointers. ... As far as our standing for the region [tournament], this doesn't change anything. We shot poorly. Their defense was very good."
Monacan opens the Central Region tournament as the Dominion District's No. 1 seed, based on its regular-season title. Manchester is the Dominion's No. 2 seed in the tournament, which includes the top four teams from each of four local districts.

CENTRAL REGION FIRST ROUND: Chiefs use a powerhouse second quarter to overcome Freeman in an opening-round Region game.
Game between the Dominion #1 seed Monacan and Colonial #4 Freeman figures to be one-sided and it starts out that way. Chiefs jump to a 7-0 lead on a 3-pointer by Dyer and Boyd's four points (lay-up, 2 free throws). But Monacan starters and subs go cold offensively and break down defensively. Rebels outscore them 14-7 the rest of the quarter, 12 points scored by Freeman's Lauren Foley.
Chiefs come out with a vengeance in the second quarter. McAllister is assigned to Foley, who barely touches the ball during the second quarter, and the rest of the Chiefs blanket Foley's teammates. Meanwhile, Young runs the break, dishing to McCarty, Glenn and Dyer. Boyd gets the ball in the half-court offense against Freeman's zone defense, scoring almost at will over the shorter Rebels. Results: Chiefs open the quarter with a six-minute, 22-0 run that effectively wraps up the game.
Chiefs maintain the lead during a lackluster second half. Highlight comes late in the game when the 6-foot-4 Boyd dribbles the ball from the top of circle in the backcourt all the way through Freeman's retreating defense -- 2/3 the length of the court -- and makes the layup as the cheering home crowd comes to its feet.
Boyd leads Monacan's scorers with 16 points, followed by Glenn 11, McCarty 10 and Dyer 9. Young has 10 assists. J.Saunders and Manwaring miss for illness.

CENTRAL REGION QUARTERFINALS: Chiefs overcome an abysmal first quarter with three strong ones to advance to the Central Region semifinals for the third straight year, setting a Monacan season scoring record in the process.
The final home game ever for record-setting Class of 2005 doesn't start auspicously. Dyer hits a 3-pointer just five seconds into the game but Monacan gets just one more score -- Boyd's stickback at 3:31 -- during the rest of the quarter. Five missed layups by the Chiefs bring groans from the home crowd.
Trailing 13-5, Dominion #1 seed Monacan picks up the defense against Central #2 seed Meadowbrook to start the second quarter. Scoring early, Chiefs are able to employ their full-court defense, which creates turnovers -- and more scores. Monacan grabs a 23-19 lead that it never relinguishes.
The third quarter shows a complete return of the old Chiefs, who overwhelm Meadowbrook at both ends of the quarter. McAllister scores six points and Dyer five to lead a 21-9 advantage in the quarter. Chiefs' good shooting continues in the fourth; for the half, Monacan makes 17 of 32 from the field. Meadowbrook's fourth-quarter fouling serves only to extend the lead.
McAllister leads the scoring 14 points, followed by Dyer's 12, McCarty's 10, Young's 9 (with 12 assists), Boyd's 9 (with 9 rebounds), Starr's 7 and Glenn's 6. J.Saunders and Manwaring miss for illness.
Monacan's 68 points bring its season total to 1,873, topping the record of 1,854 set last year. Win was the team's 25th, one behind the record set last year.
Win sets up a semifinal rematch with Atlee, the 2003 state champion, whom Monacan defeated in last year's regional semifinal.

States again!
CENTRAL REGION SEMIFINALS: Chiefs reach Central Region finals again, qualify for their second straight State Group AAA tournament, and tie their one-year-old school win record, easily dispatching Atlee in the semifinals at Virginia Commonwealth University's Seigel Center.
Monacan (26-1), the Dominion District #1 seed, will meet Manchester (23-3), the district's #2, for the fifth time this season in the final. Regardless of outcome, both will play in next week's eight-team state tournament.
Chiefs takes the upper hand early against a young Atlee team, employing a suffocating defense that nets eight turnovers in the first quarter. Atlee, which features one junior amid a squad of freshman and sophomores, literally has trouble inbounding the ball under its own basket, turning it over four or five times from the baseline. Offensively, Chiefs miss several scoring opportunities early, but Young -- who will register a rare triple-double (see below) -- pushes the fast break. McCarty and McAllister start connecting from close range; each scores eight points in the quarter, and Monacan leads 23-9.
Monacan struggles offensively in the second quarter, as Atlee drops into a zone defense and McAllister and Dyer each go to the bench with two fouls. But defense continues throttling the Raiders, who trail by 11 at half.
Any Atlee hope disappears in the third quarter. Chiefs resume their dominating ways on both ends of the court. Hot-shooting Atlee does score from the perimeter and from the free throw line when opportunities arise, but Raiders still turns the ball over frequently. McCarty's strong rebounding sets her up for scores; Young finds her with passes for others. Monacan's lead passes 20 points, ultimately reaching 30.
McCarty, Young and McAllister combine for more points (49) than does the Atlee team (42). McCarthy has a career-high 21. Young has 14 points, plus 10 rebounds and 10 assists for one of the few triple-doubles in Monacan history. (Monacan coaching staff, learning she is one rebound shy, re-inserts her into the game in the fourth quarter and she quickly gets the rebound.) McAllister also scores 14. Glenn comes off the bench to add 7 points.
Young admits to the Times-Dispatch afterward that the start was slow: "It wasn't real smooth. When you're missing shots, somebody needs to step up, take over and make one. I like to be the person who does that, but I have teammates who can do it, too."
McCarty adds: "As long as we play our game, I don't worry about losing. ... "It feels great just to win, to help my team out and do what I needed to do. ... My [teammates] just told me to play with heart. It's the most amazing feeling. I don't know how to describe it."
McAllister tells the paper there is work ahead: "Oh, I think we were happy, but, really, we've already won a regional. We want our rematch with Manchester [Monday night] in the final and we want the big ring."
Coach Natalie White tells the paper: "We've had a target on our backs and put pressure on ourselves all season. We have lofty goals and we put them out there."
Young agrees: "Four more wins and we're there. We're so close, I can taste it."

Manchester (No. 2 in Region, No. 9 in State) at Seigel Center |
W 57-45 |
CENTRAL REGION FINALS: Chiefs win their second straight Central Region championship, gaining a home-area game to start the state tournament Saturday, and also breaking their one-year-old record for wins in a season with their 27th.
Point guard Young's all-around play is instrumental in Monacan's fourth win in five games over archrival Manchester (and 10th in 11 games over three seasons). Win avenges loss to Manchester in district finals.
Monacan jumps in front early, drawing two charges on Manchester's Melanie Oliver within two minutes, playing effective team defense and spreading scoring. Monacan builds a 10-point lead and is in front 27-18 when Young scores on a lay-up midway through the second quarter.
The trouble begins. As timed by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Monacan goes the next 7:40 -- essentially the equivalent of one quarter -- without scoring a point. Chiefs repeatedly miss shots and turn the ball over during this run in the late second quarter and early third quarter.
Fortunately, Manchester has trouble scoring as well and still trails, though only 27-26, when the Chiefs get untracked. McCarty breaks the ice with a free throw, Dyer adds a 3-pointer, and Young gets a steal from Manchester's Lindsay Biggs and turns it into a layup. By the end of the quarter, Monacan's lead is back up to 40-30. Starr's opening 3-pointer in the fourth quarter stretches it to 43-30. Young's back-to-back assists to Boyd boost it to 49-33, essentially clinching the game early in the quarter.
Six players account for all Monacan's scoring: Young 16, Boyd 12, Dyer 11, McCarty 8, McAllister 5, Starr 5. Moreover, four Chiefs (Dyer 3, Young 2, McAllister, Starr) combine for seven 3-point shots, while the Lancers get none.
"This was a good win. We owed them one," Young tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch afterward. "We were surprised by their defense [in the Dominion tournament], and they played with more heart. We matched their intensity tonight and were the better team. ... We didn't want it to come down and be a close game and maybe come down to free throws cause I know, myself, I haven't been shooting free throws as well. We wanted to keep the lead on them. We got the lead, and they didn't score. We played really good defense."
Coach Natalie White says: "Everyone looks to her to lead the team. They look to her to get everyone involved. I was a point guard, and I think I'd look to Jasmine."
After the game, Young is given the award, voted earlier, as Central Region Player of the Year. McAllister is also honored as First-Team All-Region (and All-Academic). White is named Region Coach of the Year.
(Notes: J. Saunders returns to limited action following three missed games for the flu. Game was delayed one day by weather. Boys final followed.)

W.T. Woodson (No. 10 in State) at Hanover High School |
L 45-61 |
STATE GROUP AAA TOURNAMENT, FIRST ROUND: W.T. Woodson of Fairfax ends Monacan's second straight state tournament in the first round, using a 17-5 third quarter to break open a close game and send the Chiefs home for the year.
Central Region #1 seed Monacan (which enters 27-1, No. 1 in state) jumps to an early 4-0 lead. Young takes the opening tip and drives to the basket for the first score, then Dyer quickly steals the ball at mid-court and drives for another.
But North Region #2 seed Woodson (entering 25-4, No. 10 in state) immediately goes on a 14-0 run, exploting Monacan's defense on the fast break and with deadly 3-point shooting. Woodson's A. J. Lemaitre hits two 3-pointers and two 2-pointers during the run. Disciplined Cavaliers run multiple picks, as well as "back-door" cuts to the basket, in taking leads of 14-4, 20-10 and 25-16.
But Monacan comes back with a 9-0 run of its own, fueled offensively by Young and McCarty, to tie the game at 25. Woodson leads 29-27 at half.
It all comes apart in the third quarter. Woodson switches its man-to-man defense to a 2-3 zone and the Chiefs struggle to find points. "It caught them off-guard a little bit, I really think it put the dagger in them," Lemaitre tells the Washington Post afterward. "Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't." Woodson's point guard Ashley MuCulloch, who had returned to Woodson's lineup for the game following injury, agrees, telling the Richmond Times-Dispatch: "The zone kind of threw them off a little. We're normally not a zone team, but she [Woodson coach Renee DeVarney] said we might play it, and if it worked, we'd stay in it. Well, it worked, so we stayed in it."
Monacan scores only 5 points in the quarter, all on free throws. Meanwhile, Woodson puts in 17, many coming when Monacan, conscious of outside shooting, overcomits defensively and allows the Cavaliers drives to the basket after receiving lob passes. Monacan's defensive help either arrives late, allowing a 2-on-1 opportunity, or not at all. Lemaitre gives the credit to the return of her point guard, telling the Post: "I haven't made that many since Ashley came back, she's the one that hits me. I'm glad to have her back."
Meanwhile, Young tells the Times-Dispatch: "They can shoot, and our help just wasn't there. Every time we broke down, they scored. That's all it was."
The big third quarter puts Woodson up by 14 and allows them to trade baskets with Monacan in the fourth.
For the game, only four Chiefs score more than one basket: Young with 15 points, McCarthy 10, Boyd 7, and McAllister 6.

MEADOWBROOK |
L 41-42 |
Heart-breaking loss at the buzzer. First-game nerves are evident as the cold-shooting Chiefs fall behind 20-14 at halftime--with half their points having come from Greenberg as Monacan pushed the ball in low to the post. In the second half, Monacan's aggressive and determined play slowly cuts Meadowbrook's lead. Chiefs finally take a one-point advantage with 2:14 left, then stretch it to three, primarily on the shooting of Beadles (12 points, all in the second half), and Eberly (8 points), who did not enter the game until the start of the fourth quarter. Despite some offensive miscues, Chiefs still lead by one with four seconds remaining. But a Monarch player takes an inbounds pass and drives the length of the court untouched for a winning lay-up as the buzzer sounds.

But tenacious defense leaves Chiefs down only 9-3 at the quarter and, with a 9-8 advtange in the second quarter, they go to the locker room down five. Chiefs close the gap to 17-14 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter, but Bird goes on 6-point run and takes a 26-17 lead to start the last eight minutes. Chiefs step it up in the fourth, though, holding James River scoreless through nearly seven minutes while scoring 11 points themselves to retake the lead. Monacan comes out sluggish after holiday break and falls behind by nine, 32-21, at the half. Chiefs still can't get untracked after the break as the Bulldogs expand their lead to 13 points by the end of the third period. As the fourth quarter begins, Beadles draws a charging call. Then she is injured while driving hard to the basket and has to leave the game. Those are the sparks that ignite Monacan's intensity. Chiefs step up their game on both ends of the court, scoring 25 points in the last stanza while holding the Bulldogs to just six. Chiefs are led in the comeback by the team captains: Greenberg (who had a double-double, 17 points and 17 rebounds), Raikovitz (6 points and 9 rebounds) and Perdue (5 points and 5 rebounds).

Monacan starts with a full-court press, surprising the Trojans and scoring two quick buckets. Midlothian regains its composure and leads 14-13 after one quarter. But Chiefs' relentless pressure and intensity allows them to outscore Midlo 27 to 10 in the second quarter. Chiefs maintain that 16-point lead throughout the second half, the Trojans failing to make any kind of a run as the teams trade baskets. Four Chiefs hit double figures: Ready (18), Greenberg (13), Beadles (12) and Meyer (10).

Monacan can't get untracked early, having only one point with :29 seconds left in the opening period. Deep Run leads 9-1 at the end of the first stanza. Chiefs' full-court pressure, however, -s too much for Deep Run in the second as the Wildcats score only one point while Monacan scored 11 to lead 12-10 at intermission. Monacan keeps up the pressure, holding the Wildcats to three points in the third, and the Chiefs lead 21-13 lead to start the fourth quarter. Both teams are able to score in the last period, and the Wildcats could not eat into the Monacan lead. Chiefs were led by Veronica Raikovitz (10 points, 8 rebounds, 6 steals, and 2 assists) and Katie Greenberg (11 points).

Monacan starts strong, taking an 11-9 lead after the opening period. But too many unforced Chiefs turnovers, too few Chiefs rebounds and cold Chief shooting allow Lancers to pull away at the half, 27-18. Monacan's woes continue in the second half as Manchester slowly expands its lead in each quarter, grabbing an 18-point District win. Raikovitz leads the Chiefs with 8 points and 11 rebounds.

Greenberg hits three straight buckets to open the fourth quarter and give Chiefs their first lead, 28-26, with 6:07 left in the game. Chiefs dominate the Falcons from there on. HUGUENOT |
W 48-46 |
Monacan struggles for the first two quarters in its season finale, falling behind the Falcons by as much as 10 points. Chiefs' intensity picks up in the third as they cut the Huguenot lead to three -- 23-26 -- at the 5:32 mark of the period and closed out the period down four, 29-33. With 7:32 remaining in the game, Chiefs pull within two and kept up their pressure on the Falcons. At the 4:34 mark, Monacan finally takes their first lead of the night, 41-37, on Beadles' second 3-point basket of the game and the clutch free throw shooting of Ready. The frustration of the Falcons, with their failure to put the Chiefs away, becomes evident as they were called for two technical fouls. Ready hits two foul shots with less than ten seconds remaining in the game to give the Chiefs a 5-point lead, which they need as the Falcons sink a desperation 3-point shot from half court as the buzzer sounds.
SCORING (48): Beales 14, Raikovitz 9, Greenberg 8, Ready 6, Perdue 4, Meyer 4, Logan 3.
REBOUND (41) LEADERS: Raikovitz 10, Beadles 8, Perdue 5, Logan 5, Ready 4, Greenberg 3.
