  1 at Meadowbrook W 54-53 The Lady Chiefs, ranked 5th in the regional pre-season poll, defeat the 4th ranked Monarchs 54 - 53 in the season opener for both teams. The Chiefs control the boards but turnovers and poor shooting through the first three quarters limit Monacan's scoring as Meadowbrook leads by 8 to begin the fourth quarter. Carrie Saunders’ hot hand keeps the Chiefs close, as she hits 3 three-pointers and scores 13 of her game high 20 points in the last quarter. Meredith Starr scores all 7 of her points in the last 3 minutes, including shooting a perfect 4 - 4 from the free throw line in the last minute of the game. Monacan outscores Meadowbrook 25 – 16 in the final stanza to seal the come from behind victory. Audrey McCarty records a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Meredith Manwaring scores 7 points and pulls down 7 rebounds, Rachel Robinson adds 6 points (as well as 8 rebounds).

The win guarantees the Chiefs a top four finish and they advance to play Meadowbrook (a winner in the quarterfinals over Deep Run) in the semifinals. Rachel Robinson leads Monacan with 16 points and Carrie Saunders scores 14. Robinson, Saunders and Meredith Manwaring each pull down 7 rebounds. The win evens the Chiefs overall record to 2-2.

The Skyhawks control the boards and finish the game with 15-4 run to hand Monacan their fifth loss of the season. Rachel Robinson leads the way with 12 points and 8 rebounds and Carrie Saunders and Abbie Gray scores 10 and 6, respectively, in the loss. The Chiefs’ record drops to 8-4 in the district and 12-5 overall. Four seniors are honored before the game: Alli Davis, Melanie Dusy, Audrey McCarty and Hanna Teachey; we wish them well in future endeavors.

Carrie Saunders scores 16 to lead the scoring. Rachel Robinson and Meredith Starr score 12 and 10, respectively as the Chiefs turn the ball over 17 times in the loss. The Chiefs advance to the regional playoffs Tuesday when they travel to Prince George.
Sophmore Rachel Robinson is named to the first team All District and Junior Carrie Saunders is named to the second team. Both received All Academic honors as well.

21 Central Region Tournament @ Prince George W 56-37 Central Region Tournament 1st Round: The Chiefs won the first game of the regionals decisively with a 56-37 win over the Royals. Audrey McCarty leads on the offensive end with 16 points while Carrie Saunders sinks four 3's and Meredith Starr sinks three to score 14 and 13 points respectively. The defense for the Chiefs was superb as they held the Royals to 12 first half points. Monacan hosts the regional quarterfinal game tomorrow against the Hermitage Panthers.

The win increases the Chief's record to 17-6 on the season and sets up a rematch in the semifinals against LC Bird at the Siegal Center on Friday night at 8:00. Carrie Saunders leads the way with 16 points and 5 assists while Rachel Robinson also scores 16. Meredith Manwaring records 12 points and Meredith Starr passes for 10 assists in the victory. 24 Central Region Tournament @ Siegel Center vs LC Bird W 62-42 Central Region Tournament Semifinals: The Chiefs qualify for the state tournament and the regional championship game for the third year in a row with a decisive 62-42 victory over LC Bird at the Siegal Center. Carrie Saunders leads the way with a perfect shooting night of 5 for 5 from the two point area, 5 for 5 from behind the three point arc and 5 for 5 from the foul line to net 30 points. Meredith Starr also hit 5 three pointers to add 15 points. Monacan's defense is led by Emari Ready and Abbie Gray who took away the Skyhawk ball handling all night. The Chiefs play Monday against Manchester for the regional championship and play in the state tournament on Saturday against either TC Williams or Edison from the Northern Region.

Both Carrie Saunders and Rachel Robinson lead the way with 16 points and 6 rebounds, while Meredith Starr passes for 8 assists to go along with her 5 points. Audrey McCarty pulls down 8 rebounds in the loss. The Chiefs will travel to Robinson High School at 5:00 on Saturday to take on the Northern Region's number one team, Edison in the quarterfinals of the state tournament.

  4 State Tournament @ James Robinson HS vs Thomas Edison L 53-36 State Tournament Quarterfinals: Monacan's season comes to an end with a 53-36 loss against the Northern Region's number one seed, Edison. Meredith Starr and Carrie Saunders lead the scoring with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Audrey McCarty finishes out her high school career with 17 rebounds. The loss drops Monacan's final record to 18 wins and 8 losses and the game marks Monacan's third straight trip to the state basketball tournament. The Chiefs return 4 of 5 starters for the 06-07 season. Congratulations to Coach Larry Starr and the rest of the team on a great run through the Central Region Tournament!

Monacan falls behind early in the low scoring first quarter and trails Meadowbrook 20-12 at the half. The Chiefs claw their way back into the game in the third, closing the gap to two; 29 - 27. In the fourth, the Chiefs intensity soars as they outscore the Monarchs 21 - 6 to grab a non-district win.
    Highlights: Beadles 18 points, 6 rebounds; Toombs 11 points, 5 rebounds; Logan 11 points, 3 rebounds; Meyer 6 points, 13 rebounds; Cowart 2 points, 1 rebound; Fikse 5 rebounds.
      6 at Huguenot 5:45 Postponed due to weather
      8 MANCHESTER W 40-22 Neither team can get untracked in the first quarter as Monacan takes a slim 8 - 7 lead. In the second quarter, tenacious defense holds Manchester to only 1-point as Monacan builds a 9-point lead at the end of the half. The Chiefs continue to pull away from the overmatched Lancers in the third, grabbing a 31 - 13 advantage. All of the Chiefs see action in this one-sided game. Ashley Toombs scores 18 points to lead Monacan.

    13 at Midlothian L 40-37 The Chiefs play tough throughout but lose a hard fought battle to arch rival Midlothian. Both teams start tentatively as the Chiefs build a 2-point lead to end the first quarter. The Trojans pull ahead at the end of the half 18-15, and expand their lead to 9 to start the fourth quarter. The Chiefs refuse to fold, tying the game at 33 with 2:10 remaining as Ellen Meyer scores 5 points in 10 seconds. The game goes back and forth as neither team can pull away. Jordan Beadles was unable to return after being fouled hard and knocked to the floor on a drive to the basket with 19.8 seconds left. Teren Cowart comes in to shoot Beadles' free throws and hits the first of two to knot the score at 37; however, the Trojans are able to score three in the closing seconds for the win. Ellen Meyer leads the Chiefs with a double-double - 13 points and 12 rebounds.

      3 JAMES RIVER L 55-38 Ashley Toombs hits two 3-pointers to start the game as Monacan jumps to a quick four point lead. But the Chiefs did not maintain their intensity after the long Christmas break, falling behind the Rapids by four at the end of the first quarter. Monacan continues to struggle as James River pulls away, expanding their lead to nine at the half. Although the Chiefs try hard to get back in the game in the second half, as Ashley Toombs scores 10 of her team high 16 points after the break, the Rapids prove to be just too much as they increase their lead in each of the last two quarters to post a 17 point win. Toombs hit four 3-pointers in the game and Jordan Beadles added two 3-pointers.

      5 at LC Bird L 54-33 The Chiefs can’t get their shots to drop in the first quarter as they fall behind the Skyhawks by five at the end of the first stanza. Monacan’s shooting woes continue in the second quarter, but they are able to cut Bird’s lead to only four at the half. In the second half, the Chief’s are hot and cold from the floor and the free throw line, falling behind Bird by as much as 19 points. Monacan closes the gap to 10 points with 2:57 left in the game before the Skyhawks pull away to seal the victory.

    10 CLOVER HILL L 43-37 The Chiefs come out firing and take a two point lead over the Cavaliers at the end of one period. Clover Hill regroups in the second quarter and jumps to a five-point lead at the half, 22-17. Monacan continues to play hard cutting the Cavalier’s lead to a slim three-point margin to start the last quarter. With three minutes left in the game, the Chief’s grab a one point lead, 37-36, but are unable to score again as Clover Hill scores the last seven points to win the district match up. The Chiefs are lead by Ashley Toombs, who pours in 17 points, and Ellen Meyer, who pulls down 18 rebounds.
    Highlights: Toombs 17 points, 4 rebounds; Meyer 9 points, 18 rebounds; Beadles 6 points, 6 rebounds; Logan 3 points, 2 rebounds; Fikse 2 points, 7 rebounds; Gobern 3 rebounds; Cowart 2 rebounds.

    17 HUGUENOT W 43-39 The Chiefs get off to a very slow start, turning the ball over on their first seven trips down the court and going 0 - 12 from the field in the first quarter, their scrappy defense keeps them in the game as the Falcons take a 7 - 2 lead at the end of the first stanza. Monacan’s offensive woes continue at the start of the second quarter, their first field goal of the game comes with 6:03 left in the period; but they are able to cut Huguenot’s lead to three, 17 - 14, at the half. The fourth quarter begins with the Chiefs down only one point. Monacan gets their offense untracked and pulls ahead of Huguenot 36-34 with 3:45 left in the game. The lead goes back and forth until the Chiefs take the lead for good with just over a minute remaining. Monacan outscores Huguenot 15 to 10 down the stretch to grab a hard fought win. Ellen Meyer (double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds), Jordan Beadles (14 points with a three-point field goal) and Brittni Logan (11 points) lead the Chiefs.

    19 at Manchester W 51-34 Monacan takes the opening tip, scores the first bucket of the game, and never looks back. The Chiefs lead the overmatched Lancers 19-3 at the end of one quarter and 26-15 at the half. In the third period, Monacan outscores Manchester 16-6 as the Chiefs cruise to an easy 17-point win. Brittni Logan leads all scorers with 13 points; Jordan Beadles and Ashley Toombs each add 12.

    23 at Huguenot W 52-37 The Chiefs jump out to a 12-9 lead over the Falcons in the first period; the lead doubles to 6-points, 22-16, at the half on the hot shooting of Jordan Beadles, who goes six-for-six in the first sixteen minutes, including two 3-pointers. Monacan continues to pull away from Huguenot in the third quarter outscoring the Falcons 13-9. Beadles stays hot in the second half, adding 10 more points for a game high 24, and Ashley Toombs tosses in 7-points after the break to contribute to the 15-point win. Ellen Meyer and Kara Fikse pull down 12 and 10 boards, respectively, for the Chiefs.

    26 MIDLOTHIAN W 50-35 The game starts very slowly for both teams; the Chiefs don't score a field goal until over 6 minutes has elapsed in the period and the Trojans fail to score in the first quarter as Monacan jumps on top 6-0. The Chiefs get things going in the second quarter as they outscore the Trojans 17-7 to take a 23-7 lead to the locker-room. Midlothian mounts a come back bid in the third quarter, outscoring the Chiefs 13-7, to close the Monacan lead to only ten points. In the fourth period, the Trojans attempt to get back in the game by putting the Chiefs on the foul line but Jordan Beadles, Brittni Logan, and Ashley Toombs combine to sink 8 of 11 free throws in the closing minutes (Beadles hits six straight) to seal the win for the Chiefs over their fierce district rival. Beadles leads all scorers with 20 points and nine rebounds.

    30 at Varina L 38-36 The Chiefs offense starts slowly again, their first score of the game comes at the 4:30 mark of the first quarter, as they fall behind the Blue Devils 11-7 at the close of the period. Monacan grabs their first lead of the game, 12-11, with 5:00 minutes left in the first half, and take a 19-18 lead to the locker room. The game remains close in the third period as the Chiefs retain their slim one-point lead, 28-27, at the end of three quarters. The game stays close in the fourth quarter and Varina is able to pull out a two point victory in this non-district hard fought battle. The Chiefs are led by Ellen Meyer (double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds), Ashley Toombs (10 points), and Jordan Beadles (9 points).

    31 at James River L 41-16 The Chiefs come out flat and can’t get pumped up, scoring only 2-points in the first period to fall behind the Rapids 10-2 at the end of quarter one. Monacan picks it up in the second quarter, but still trails James River 19-11 at the half. The Chiefs are ice cold in the third, scoring only 1-point, which comes with 1:15 left in the period. Monacan can only muster two field goals in the fourth quarter as James River runs away with the victory.

      2 LC Bird L 34-33 Ellen Meyer hits a three point shot to start the game and the Chiefs jump out to a 7-0 lead before the Skyhawks get their first point with 5:20 left in the quarter. Neither team can muster much offense in the first half, as Monacan holds a 10-8 lead at the end of one period, and a 16-14 lead at the end of two. In the third quarter, the Monacan offense shows signs of life outscoring Bird 10 to 7 to take a 5-point lead into the last eight minutes. Although Bird tries desperately to take the lead, the Chiefs hold off the Skyhawks’ attack until the last minute of the game. Trailing 30-33, Bird was able to convert on two field goals in the closing 10 seconds of the game to pull out the win. Ellen Meyer led the Chiefs with another double-double (15 points and 11 rebounds), and Kara Fikse pulled down 18 rebounds in the heart wrenching loss.

      7 at Clover Hill L 41-32 Clover Hill’s zone defense proves difficult for the Chiefs to penetrate as they fall behind 8-5 at the end of the first period. In the second quarter, the Cavaliers add a full court trap to further stymie the Chiefs — as they double their lead over Monacan to 18-12 at the half. The Chiefs get rolling in the third quarter, cutting Clover Hill’s lead to four at 27-23. In the final quarter, Monacan cranks up their intensity, tying the game at 30 with 4:19 remaining. The Chiefs can’t maintain the level of play, however, and the Cavaliers pull away for the victory. Jordan Beadles leads the Chiefs with 16 points (she hits five 3-point shots) and Ellen Meyer contributes 12 points.
