Underworld : The Mysterious Origins of Civilization by GRAHAM HANCOCK, presents a collection of evidence for the presence of many unexplored cities and artifacts that may exist on the continental margins flooded by the termination of the last glacial maximum. Hancock discusses recently discovered submerged urban centers - i.e., megalithic sites off the coasts of Japan, India, and Cuba - and argues that there may be many more waiting to be found. One reader says the following about the book,"If one will take the time to read the complete book (700 pages!) and check out many of the footnotes you cannot but help arrive at the conclusion that there was once a very large and relatively advanced culture that goes back much farther in the archaeological record than heretofore accepted." Childress is a prolific writer who is fascinated by all things ancient, technical and mysterious. His books may not be as rigorous or as exhaustive in their analysis as some would prefer, but he is a very entertaining writer who communicates his own enthusiasm for the topics he explores. The book has 343 pages and the average customer rating is four out of five stars. One reader expresses the following opinion about this book, "Some of the pictures really make you think, what did the ancients really know. The theories on the pyramids is very original. Atlantis in America: Navigators of the Ancient World, by Ivar Zapp and George Erikson, presents evidence that the Americas have been a melting pot for traders, explorers, and colonizers for millenia. The average customer review is four and a half stars out of five. One reader has the following comments about the book, "Atlantis In America reveals much more than just information on the probable location of Atlantis. It demonstrates scientifically how ancient cultures interacted through trade and migration. The New View over Atlantis, by John F. Michell, is a classic inquiry into the nature and function of ancient material artifacts which seem to be coordinated with a natural energy grid for our planet. One reader has the following comments about the contents of this book, "...The fact that there is an energy coursing through the earth has revolutionary implications for the fields of physics, archeology, anthropology, agriculture, ecology, and politics. It also offers hope for a "human society which is ordered and regulated on cosmic principle, demonstrably reflecting the order of nature and the heavens." Michell is correct in stating that such a society "is the only one which will attract and deserve general acceptance." Our fall from grace has many faces, but all of them are but reflections of the fact that we have forgotten that the universe is ordered, and that nature provides for her children. Our ignorance of the grid of energy beneath our feet is but one example of our lapse. ..." Night Comes to the Cretaceous: Comets, Craters, Controversy, and the Last Days of the Dinosaurs, by James Lawrence Powell, is a presentation of the history of scientific understanding of the extinction of the dinosaurs. Powell is a professional geologist who supports the theory of "punctuated" evolution for Earth's flora and fauna. One reader says the following about this book,"One of the great scientific revolutions of our times has been the recognition that the biological evolution of Earth is influenced (by) random impacts by comets and asteroids. When this concept was put forward in 1980, it was radical; today it is the accepted wisdom in paleontology, geology, and evolutionary biology. Jim Powell tells a fascinating story of the evidence for this transformation and of the scientists who have been protgonists in the struggle to understand this evidence and integrate it into our broader undestanding of our planet." The Lost Civilizations of the Stone Age, by Richard Rudgley, presents evidence for the very early prescence of many arts of civilization. A portion of the editrorial review states the following, "Among historians, one of the most widely accepted criteria for a society's being "civilized" is whether it has a writing system, one that permits complex record keeping and allows for an account of the past. By that measure, writes British museologist Richard Rudgley, many societies of the most ancient Stone Age are to be reckoned as civilizations, for new archaeological evidence suggests that the Neolithic writing systems of cultures like Mesopotamia and the Nile valley have their roots in even older systems, some dating back to the time of the Neanderthals....He maintains ... that fired pottery, another characteristic of civilized societies, existed among Siberian nomads some 13,000 years ago, and that a knowledge of metallurgy existed in Egypt 35,000 years ago. Any call for a revision in widely accepted chronologies is, of course, sure to be controversial among prehistorians, and Rudgley's book, well reasoned as it is, will provoke debate."
