Dark Mission: The Secret History of NASA, by Richard C. Hoagland and Mike Bara, talks about NASA's roots in Masonic secret society ritual and about the deep debt that NASA owes to nazi science and scientists. I have the book and I think that it is a great compilation of pertinent historical data on NASA activity and philosophy. The average customer review is four out of five stars. Apollo-Missions to the Moon (1996) is a collection of NASA videos in VHS format from Apollo missions 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17. A Traveler's Guide to Mars: The Mysterious Landscapes of the Red Planet by William K. Hartmann, is written by a scientist who has been involved in Mars research since 1965. The book has 468 pages and the average customer review is five stars out of five. The book was published in August of 2003. One viewer gives the following comments about the book,"This is an excellent book in every way imaginable. First of all, it satisfied a longing I had had for several years. Second, it is written by a top flight scientist who also happens to be a gifted writer and communicator. Third, it is edited and presented in such a well-thought-out manner that it is simply a pleasure to read (and re-read and re-read). The only possible improvement I could suggest would be a second edition (updated of course with new findings) that uses the coffee-table format." Mission To Mir (IMAX) (1997), directed by Ivan Galin, chronicles the first NASA mission to the former Russian Mir space station. One viewer gives the following comments about the DVD,"This IMAX video takes you through the first flights and cooperative training that joined the US and Russia on MIR. It chronicles what US astronauts experienced in their training with the Russian cosmonauts in preparation for their experiences aboard MIR. Never before seen footage of Russian space sites and training along with footage of the first woman aboard MIR Shannon Lucid are included. This video gives you the history and work that led up to the eventual construction, launch and deployment of today's International Space Station." For All Mankind - Criterion Collection (1989), by Al Reinert, is a record of the Apollo missions that was selected from millions of feet of NASA footage and eighty hours of interviews with the astronauts. The quality of the images here is great, but the clarity and accuracy of the final product are questioned by the following viewer comments,"Where Mr. Mattingly goes terribly wrong is taking footage from completely unrelated missions and creating his own Frankenstein's moon shot. I'm not picking nits here. The movie depicts a space walk during an Apollo moon mission, using Gemini footage. The astronaut identifications are sometimes wrong. The voice-overs don't match the images. And, by far, the most distrubing inconsistency is the depiction of the Apollo 13 disaster, followed by "everything is fine" dialog and a continuation to the moon! The only redeeming quality of this film is the footage itself. It is stunning, to stay the least. Especially beautiful is the footage on the moon and of the astronauts driving the rover."
