Breakfalling techniques
Getting a good breakfalling technique is very important as you spend quite a lot of time making friends with the floor.  And don't do it on hard floor unless you really know what you're doing- it hurts.  Also please note- breakfalling cannot be adequetly taught using pictures.  Pay attention to your sensei as they can teach you much better than Bob can.
Key points to remember when practicing break falling techniques:
*Strike the mat hard with one of both arms; If you don't absorb the impact with your hand then another part of your body will take it all.  Which isn't nice.
*Tuck your chin to your chest so that your head does not hit the mat
*Start from a low position and gradually work up to a standing position
*Breath out before you hit the floor.  This greatly reduces the chance of being winded.
Sideways breakfall
Forwards breakfall
Backwards breakfall
Front drop
Over the belt
Kick and drop
Handstand breakfall
Peg leg
Judo roll
Sit on- drop off
The further you step back into this fall, the easier it is.
I hate this drop- I always land on my face.  You can make the drop less harsh by spreading your legs wide and lowering yourself down before breaking.
Aikido roll
Although it looks like Bob is breakfalling over a sheep it is in fact a representation of a person kneeling
I've only just leant this one but it's much the same as a forward roll except you do not bring your back leg round.  It stays in the same position as you land and you just rise up on the other leg.
Like a normal forward roll except you keep your back leg straight and dont turn after the break.  The idea is that you get straight up facing in the direction you rolled and run away.
Like a backwards breakfall except off something, usually a person.  The key for this one is to hold on tightly with your legs and almost lower yourself down.
I like peglegs.  You put one knee into the persons kidneys, the opposite arm on their far shoulder and the other arm loops around their waist.  Then you just throw yourself over, making sure to land with your bottom leg straight.
For this one, you basically just fall forward- making sure you land on your forearms and hands (hands hit the ground first I think) Make sure you turn you head to the side so you don't hurt your nose.
For this fall you step back with one leg and sort of 'sit down', then break and roll over the shoulder opposite to the leg which kept straight.
