~ The Ragdoll Cat ~
The breed began quietly in early 1960 when a Californian woman crossed a white Persian-Angora named Josephine, with a Birman. It was claimed, the breed's distinctive 'floppiness' happened when Josephine was hit by a car, a genetic improbability. In reality the Ragdoll's laidback character is more likely the result of a crossing of two placid breeds, the Persian and the Birman.
Ragdolls were recognised as a breed in the US in 1967 and in Australia in 1991. There are believed to be 500 Ragdoll breeders worldwide, and individual breeders in every state in Australia.
They are a responsive Cat, with characteristics usually attributed to dogs. Ragdolls want to be where you are, and will follow you everywhere. They are devoted & pay attention to what you are doing. They are intelligent, playful, affectionate, sweet and docile, not fighters. They may with training, go for a walk on a leash or ride on the seat beside you in the car. They will fetch a favorite toy and bring it back to you time and time again for another toss. They can learn tricks such as "Shake Hands" or "How about a kiss?". They easily adapt to other cats, dogs, children and people.
Because they are docile & not fighters, they should never be an "outdoor" cat! They are so loving that the think everything & everyone should love them the same way. They wouldn't know how to defend themselves. If you do let them outside, please supervise them or put them on a leash.
The RAGDOLLS are an irresistibly huggable cat. Some refer to them as "lap cats". They can grow exceptionally large and heavy. Full maturity of size and colors are not to be expected for at least three years. (Just when you think the RAGDOLL has finished growing, it grows some more, sometimes well after its third birthday.) The Ragdoll belongs to one of the largest cat breeds with a heavy bone structure. Adult males may reach fifteen pounds or larger. Females will weight about five pounds less and be a few inches shorter.
They have the unique characteristic of going limp (when they so desire) in your arms when you pick them up. They love being held like a baby and will lie on their backs with their back legs flattened out and arms sticking up in the air. They also love to have their belly rubbed. They have rabbit like fur, medium to long, silky, non-matting & low shedding, which flows into a luxurious ruff and full plumed tail with long flowing pantaloons. They have tufts between the pawpads and plumes in the ears. They are called "low maintenance cats".
