"I’m LATE!" Serena screamed as she hurriedly put her hair up. Or down I should say down. "I can’t believe I’m late! I guess old habits never die!" she hurriedly put her shoes on and rushed to her next door neighbors house. For the first time in 6 years, she was gonna see her best friends again after going to some finishing school at the age of 13.
Andrew and Darien Parker were two brothers, who in her opinion, look nothing alike, were hosting a welcome back party for her. There all her close friend’s were gonna be, Amy, Raye, Lita, Mina, Greg, Chad and Ken.
Serena rushed into their enormous house.
"Hi Jeeves! I know I’m late! Bye Jeeves!" Serena said as she rushed up the stairs and Jeeves shook his head. She was still the same Serena after all.
"God, where is that meatball head? Late to her own party!" Raye yelled just as Serena came in.
"Right here Raye, glad to know you’ve missed me." Serena said in her sweet angelic voice and everyone took a deep breath. Her long golden hair was let down and cascading around her body, her silver dress that shimmered whenever she walked, and her heels that clicked on the tile floor. Serena curtsied perfectly.
"I would like to thank you all for coming," Serena said and Andrew quickly got up. "Andy! How are you?" she asked as she hugged him.
"I’m cool, but you! You have changed, hasn’t she Dare?" Andrew turned to Darien and Serena caught her breath.
‘He’s changed from the nerdy boy’ Serena realized. As he stood up to hug her, she came just barely up to his shoulders,
‘and his whole body is just like, wow!’ Darien’s broad shoulders to his six pack to his muscular arms stunned Serena.
‘but his hair is still black and slicked back, and his eyes are so gorgeous! Crap what am I thinking?’ Serena shook herself clear and hugged Darien back.
"You’ve changed." Darien said in a low husky voice.
"So have you," Serena lowered her eyes and it took all of Darien’s strength not to kiss her.
"Ehem!" Raye coughed discreetly and Serena broke from Darien and hugged Raye. After everyone had a chance to hug her, Serena looked at the table.
"Let’s eat! Where do I sit?"
"You sit by Scott over there?" Andrew pointed to the seat beside the brown haired guy and Serena gasped. Her eyes lowered into slits and he waved at her weakly.
During the whole dinner, Serena made a point of ignoring Scott, and everyone wondered what was wrong. Finally Scott stood up and said he had to leave.
"Serena, I’m sorry, I couldn’t do anything." Serena got up and slapped him.
"Don’t say that, you could have done something instead of just watching. I hope that haunts you forever. I want you to leave now!" Serena said coldly as she pointed to the door.
"Serena!" Andrew had also gotten up.
"Either he leaves or I leave and he was just about to leave. Jeeves, please show him out." The butler came and showed Scott out and Serena just stood there, staring after his retreating figure. There was an awkward silence before Andrew broke it.
"Serena, what was that?" he asked faintly. "What was wrong with you?"
"Who invited him?" Serena asked icily, ignoring Andrew’s question. "You said that only my close friends were here, why was he here?" Serena demanded, her voice rising higher and higher.
"He said he had to talk to you," Amy said quietly.
"And you let him come?" Serena’s voice rose to a shrill and she slumped back in her chair and put her face in her hands.
"Serena, what happened?" Darien ordered and Serena looked at him helplessly.
"I should have told you all this, I’m sorry."
"Serena, did he hurt you? I’ll pound him!" Lita burst in.
"No exactly," Serena shook her head slowly. "You know why I left for finishing school 6 years ago all of a sudden?" They shook their heads. "Because I was raped." Everyone gasped and the guys held their girl’s closer.
"Oh Serena! I’m so sorry!" The girls murmured their agreement. She bowed her head sadly, as if she didn’t want to relieve the memory. Who would?
"Scott was there. He was watching his older brother do that to me. He didn’t go to the phone or anything. Just watched. Could have sworn a look of amusement flashed through his eyes. I yelled for him to get help. He just stood there." Serena broke down in sobs.
"I went to the counselors. They suggested I get away, out of this town that held memories that would damage me. So I did. I went to the boarding school. It has helped, taken away some of my klutziness away." Serena tried to smile through her tears and Raye came over and hugged her gently.
"It’s ok," she whispered.
"But I’m back, and I’m going to forget the past. I’m sorry about how I acted to Scott," she said to Andrew, who just shook his head.
"He deserved it,"
Serena tried to enjoy the rest of her party. But it wasn’t the same. Not only was she different but the incident was let out and everyone was in misery. One by one they all left.
"Thanks for coming and I’m sorry that it was a disaster," she called out to them. After Mina had left Serena turned to Darien and Andrew.
"I’m sorry I ruined the life of the party," she said quietly.
"Oh Sere, you didn’t," Andrew hugged her and he felt Serena stiffen under him.
"I’m sorry Andy, I’m still not used to guys, that’s not all that happened." Darien raised his eyebrows,
What else had happened to this poor girl?
"I was going out with this guy, he was really sweet to me, and I felt he was the one. So on our anniversary I let him, almost. But then his other girlfriend comes in and sees me half-naked. When we’ve sorted this out, we found out me and her aren’t the only ones he’s with. Me and her, Molly her name is, became fast friends. But it took me a while to go out again. The next time I went out, it turned out the guy had a bet to make me sleep with him, the day after, he would dump me. Molly over heard and told me."
"Oh, Sere, I’m so sorry," Darien said sympathetically and pulled her towards him into an embrace and she didn’t resist.
"It’s not your fault that all guys are pigs," Serena said, smiling slightly through her tears. She got up,
"Well, I better go," The guys nodded, she hesitated before kissing them both on the cheek.
"Thank you for everything," And she left with the boys staring after her.
"She’s been hurt too many times Andy," Darien said as he stared after her retreating body.

Serena yawned and stretched. She needed a break after doing homework for three hours straight. She was attending the same collage Darien and Andrew were and had some classes with them. Since she was absent the first three days, she had a ton of homework to make up. Serena went downstairs to get something to eat. As she washed the apple, she noticed Andrew and Darien talking in exaggerated hand motions.
‘What’s up with them?’ She wondered. ‘I should give them a call, I don’t get one of the assignments,’ Serena picked up the phone and dialed their number. She watched as the boys paused and Jeeves came up to them with the phone in hand. Andrew took it.
"Hello?"
"Hey Andy," Andrew looked out the window and straight into Serena’s kitchen. She waved and he smiled.
"Hey, what’s up?"
"Nothing much, but I don’t get the lit homework."
"Would you like to come over?" Andrew asked, already knowing the answer.
"Yeah!" They hung up and Serena quickly changed, gathered up her stuff, and left for their house. She rang the doorbell and Jeeves answered it.
"Hello Miss. Serena,"
"Hey Serena!" Andrew appeared followed by Darien. "Why did you bring your car if you live next door." Serena turned around to look at the car then back again at Andrew.
"For the same reason you bring your car over to my house when you live next door," she replied and Andrew blushed. Darien tried to stifle a laugh and Serena turned to look at him.
"You do the same thing Dare," She noted and Darien turned a shade of red, Serena giggled and patted his cheek softly. "Come on," She walked inside to the library and the boys followed.
"So what are we supposed to do?" Serena asked once they were all settled in.
"We’re supposed to write about our worst experience," Andrew said.
"Or we could write a poem," Darien added quickly seeing Serena’s expression.
"A poem!" Serena squealed, her mood changing. "I love poems!" she drawled, seeing their surprised expressions.
"Really?" Andrew asked amazed and Serena nodded.
"My favorite one is The Bells by Edgar Allan Poe." She started reciting.
<<Keeping time, time, time
In a sort of Runic rhyme,
To the throbbing of the bells-
Of the bells, bells, bells-
To the sobbing of the bells:-
Keeping time, time, time,>>
Andrew and Darien had been quiet the whole time during her recitation, but now Darien joined her in the end.
<<As he kneels, kneels, kneels,
In a happy Runic rhyme
To the rolling of the bells-
Of the bells, bells, bells-
Of the tolling of the bells-
Of the bells, bells, bells,
Bells, bells, bells-
To the moaning and the groaning of the bells. >>
They finished and Andrew clapped, as did Jeeves who had joined them.
"That was wonderful!" Andrew said happily, "You two are a great couple!" Serena blushed.
"Yes, Master Andrew is very right, have you ever gone to a poetry reading?" Jeeves gave his opinion.
"A poetry reading?" Darien asked confused.
"I’ve heard of those!" Serena exclaimed. "They are in coffee houses and someone goes up and reads their favorite poem and there’s always drums in the background."
"That’s right," Jeeves nodded. "You should go there, it is in fact quite fun."
"We should give it a try!" Serena said turning to Andrew. "Do you know any coffee houses near by?"
"There’s the Midnight Coffee House. I’ve heard it serves excellent coffee," Jeeves pitched in.
"Let’s go!" Serena chimed and the two brothers looked at each other uncertainly.
"Well…" Darien said still looking at Andrew.
"Please…" Serena pleaded. "I really wanna go!" She put her pouty face on and Darien sighed.
"I can never resist that face,"
"I know!"
"Fine we’ll go."
"Yes! I always win! See ya later and thanks for the help! I’ll call you." And Serena stumbled out before Darien could disagree.
*~*~*~*~*
Serena sat at her desk, thinking. Her golden hair scattered around her. She was working on her poem for class. As she relaxed in the calmness in her room, she stared at a picture of her when she was little. It was of her hanging upside down on the bars, laughing and smiling widely. Her hair almost touching the ground. She remembered that picture.
Suddenly she wondered what her child self would say if she looked at Serena now.
That’s it! Serena found an inspiration. She would write as if she was asking her past self what it thought of her now, in the future.
Serena started writing,
All I Am
When you look into the future,
Do you like me?
How I am,
What I can be.
Or is it the little things
You dislike so much
The way I talk,
Or how I laugh.
When you see me
Step onto the field or track
Do you like how
I sprint there and back.
Or would you prefer me
To be sweet and serene
Full of innocence
I never have anymore.
When you look into the future,
Do you like what you see?
The extravagant person I am now,
Shy like I wasn’t before
Would you be proud of how
I truly turned out to be
Or would you scoff and look away,
Ashamed that you will soon be me.
When you look into the future,
Are you afraid of the problems?
Will you run away
Or be mature and face them.
"When you look into the future, I hope that you are satisfied, that the world is at peace, and I am all that I can be." Serena looked up from her paper and saw everyone staring at her.
"Um.. thank you," The class burst into a round of applause and she sat down.
"Thank you Serena, that was beautiful." The teacher commented and Serena flushed happily.
When the bell rang, Serena gathered up her stuff and started walking to her car. Darien caught up with her.
"Serena, that was amazing!" He told her.
"Thank you," She said looking down at the ground.
"I didn’t know you could right poetry."
"I kept it to myself,"
"Well, it was beautiful, like the teacher said."
"You really think so?" Serena asked Darien unexpectedly and he took a step back.
"Well.. yeah, it had meaning. What were you think about when you wrote it?" They were at Serena’s now and Serena got in as Darien leaned against the side of the convertible.
"I was wondering if my past self would be proud of me now."
"We all are Sere," Darien said softly, catching the tear that rolled down her cheek. She shook his hand away and could have sworn that a look of hurt pasted through Darien’s eyes.
"Are we up for the poetry reading tonight?" Serena inquired, ignoring the feeling. Darien nodded. "Great see you then!" And she backed out of the parking spot and drove home with Darien staring after her.
