Yea!" A blonde with pigtails paraded down the halls with her fellow cheerleaders. The people in the hall cheered with them. "Serena! Can we stop? We’ve been doing this for 2 hours already!" Mina Ainako, one of Serena’s best friend cried out tiredly. "yea, we have to save our energy for the football game today" Serena’s other best friend, Lita Kino said. "yea, meatball head! Stop already!" Raye Hino, Serena’s best friend of 7 years. "according to my calculating, if we don’t stop now, we may faint from exhaustion after the football game…" Amy Anderson said, another one of Serena’s best friend. "ok, ok, ok" Serena groaned. "I know when to give up" She was tired a little herself. God knows where all this energy came from. "well, we have 4 hours to kill, so how bout going to the arcade?" Mina had a mischievous look in her eye. "is it cauz Andrew works there?" Lita teased her best friend. Mina had a horrified look on her face but the group knew she was in love with the store owners son, Andrew Fujituhara. *** The girls entered the arcade and Mina went straight to Andrew. "HIIIIIIIIIIIIII Andrew!!" She drawled. Andrew smiled then turned to the other girls. ‘help’ was clearly written on his handsome face. The girls just laughed silently and took a seat. Andrew rushed over to take their order, glad to have an excuse to get away from the boy-crazy Mina. As much as he liked her, this was too much. "so what will it be ladies?" "ladies? They aren’t ladies, at least not Serena" a voice boomed. Serena knew who it was before she turned around. "Darien Shields" she spat out venomously. "what are YOU doing here?" Darien smirked. "I do have a right to be here" "no you don’t!" he infuriated her so much. He thought that she was one of the girls who would kiss the ground he walked on. Yeah, sure he was cute, tall and muscular, deep blue eyes, and silky black hair. He was also captain of the football team. Everyone thought they were the perfect match. Both model students at whatever they did, but that was because they competed to be on top. He had tons of girls hanging around him, just like she had tons of guys around her. All the fights they had was real right? People thought that it was a cover up for their love for each other. In fact, Serena and Darien were the only ones who didn’t know that they loved each other. Everyone else in their classes knew or suspected. Serena had one reason why she couldn’t fall in love with Darien, and that was the reason everyone knew. She didn’t want to ruin her rep. And she kinda liked fighting with Darien. It gave her… spirit. A day with out fighting or teasing put Serena in a sad mood. It was the same with Darien, the fighting and the reason. But Serena kept the second reason a secret. No one knew. No one cared to find out that much. All people knew was that Serena Temple (AN: don’t ask about the last name) was a bright young girl who got straight A’s. She also excelled in everything she did. Aside from being captain of the cheer leading team, she was captain of the soccer team and the track team. Her long blonde hair was put up in to two buns on either side of her head. She was always smiling and made everyone else around her feel special. She was that kinda of girl. Now let’s go back to reality were Serena and Darien are fighting. Nothing unusual right? Right. "yes, I do have a right to be here," he smirked again. "unless you want to stop me" Serena was thinking quickly. Stopping him would mean she wouldn’t have to deal with him. but stopping him also means touching him. Definite no-no. "ooo, you make me so mad!" She then thought of something. Brilliant, she told herself. "you maybe able to come in here, but guess what I can do?" "what?" Darien asked without skipping a beat. "boycott your game…with ALL the cheer leaders." Darien’s face grew pale. He had to have the cheerleaders! A team without cheer leaders meant 1) no one would show, 2) the other team would think they suck and how would that intimidate them? 3) the guys would all blame him. Darien sighed. "fine, fine I’ll leave" he got up to leave. "no, it’s ok" Serena said quickly before she even realized what she said. "I just wanted to see you squirm…you’re cute that way" she flashed him a smile. Then, realizing what she said, she turned beet red. "really? You think so huh?" Darien turned around. "no…no, um I meant fun…ny. Funny!" she stammered out. "heh…heh…" Serena gave him a weak grin. Finally, one her friends jumped in even though it was a funny situation. "come on Serena, gotta hit the books," Amy said standing up. Serena ran out the door. When Serena left, Darien walked over to Andrew, one of his best friends. "god, Andrew, why do you think I make her so … jumpy?" "I dunno, but that’s one of the few times- one of the only times I’ve seen her turn red and stammer. She never does that, so be proud that were able to make her do that." "I am believe me" Darien smiled sarcastically. Darien walked out of the arcade thinking about what Andrew said. He had one hour to spare, he had to get to the field one hour early to practice. Darien couldn’t believe that 2 hours had gone by. Boy, Serena and him fighting sure does buy time. He walked out to the lake by the park, his fave spot to think. When Darien sat down, a butterfly flied by. As he watched where it went with his eyes, he marveled at how pretty it was and how it was able to fly free with no worries. It landed on Serena who was sitting about 50 feet away from him. Her legs were crossed and she was supporting them with her arms. Darien gasped, what was she doing here? Serena giggled when it settled down on her nose. She gently lifted her slender hand up to it and watched as it crawled on her hand. Her hand came out as she tried to let it go. But it wouldn’t fly off her hand; gently she shook her hand. Still, the butterfly wouldn’t budge. Darien had an idea. He walked over to Serena and sat down about, oh about diagonally, but still close enough from her. Pretty much behind her though. He took her out stretched delicate hand and out it in his own, rough hand. Carefully he blew on it and the butterfly flew away. Serena gasped, when the butterfly left her hand, only then did she notice Darien. She turned her head to look at him and found herself drowning in his midnight blue eyes. Unconsciously, they both leaned forward. Serena felt his hot breath on her lips and closed her eyes. RING! RING! RING! Serena jumped and found herself on the grass. She had been sitting on Darien’s lap and her arms around his neck. His arms were holding her waist but at the disruption they quickly let go. Both missed the warm feeling immediately. "hello" Serena answered her cute cell phone annoyed. It had a blue background with pink paw prints on it. She paused as she listened then said, "uhuh, no… no, I got it. WHY?!? Aw… crap! No *sigh* no, k. bye babe." She hung up and looked out to the spot where the butterfly wistfully. Darien coughed and Serena jumped. She hadn’t realized he was here. "Darien!… what are you doing here?" he gave her a strange look and she blushed at what had happened and almost happened. "I come here to think" Serena let out a laugh. "so the great Darien thinks!" He rolled his eyes. "A lot more than you do probably" Serena stuck her tongue out at him as he laughed. "Yea, I don’t think at all, that’s why I’m one of the smartest in our grade." She said sarcastically. "No wait- I am the smartest, you don’t count" "We are tied. So we are both smart at the same level" Darien said equally. "But I’m smart, it takes no brains to be a quarterback" Serena said smugly. Darien sighed. She just wouldn’t give up would she? "What ever" Serena got up and started walking. Darien called after her, "Hey! Where are you going?" She turned around and yelled out, "Mina called to remind me that I have practice in and hour and should get ready." She glanced at him before adding, "and so do you right?" Darien nodded and got up also. "May I would you home milady?" Darien asked bowing like a prince and Serena smiled slightly. "Well… I guess so, but if you think your gonna get on my good side think again. It’s gonna take more than that" Darien laughed. "Why would I do that? I am merely being a gentlemen." Serena snorted at that and continued walking. Darien quickly caught up to her and they talked the whole time, learning things about the other they never knew. Serena stopped a block away from her house and said she couldn’t walk home from there. Darien politely refused and wanted to walk Serena to the door. He noticed that her face grew paler and paler. Finally, he yelled at him. "IF YOU DON’T LEAVE ME HERE, I’LL…I’LL SAY THAT YOU STILL SUCK YOUR THUMB!" Darien grew pale also. Imagine the captain and quarterback of the football team still sucking his thumb and everyone knowing? Darien shuddered at the thought. "Fine!" he snapped. "Just lower the decibels! You can go now" Serena smiled happily and left as Darien stared after her. Why was she making such a big deal about this? Oh well, Darien sighed, he had to get home and changed. Time really does fly when Serena’s around. * * * * * "Serena get on top… good, good. Now flip…that’s right" Molly, the cheerleader’s coached yelled as they practiced one more time. Serena glanced to where the football team was practicing. Darien and the guys were separated into teams and scrimmaged against each other. As much as she didn’t want to admit, Darien did look kinda a cute in his uniform but with out the jersey. No! I DON’T like him. Serena reminded herself. She turned her attention back to the cheerleader’s who were taking a break. They would practice the routine one more time then change and get ready for the big game. ~IN THE LOCKER ROOM~ "Have you guys seen my pink lipstick?" Serena asked her friends. "No, have you seen my ribbons?" Valerie, another cheerleader, asked as she pasted by. "Uhuh" "You know, I’m not feeling that good, maybe I should sit out," Serena said nervously. "NO! We need you" Lita shouted from across the room. "Well… ok, I guess. But don’t blame me if I break a leg out there!" They laughed. Finally, they were ready, the pink lipstick ha been found and the ribbons too. "ARE YOU READY…?" "YES WE’RE READY!" "GIVE ME A SHOUT…!" "SHOUT!" "AND LET’S GET OUT!" The cheerleaders rushed out except for Serena who stayed back to look at her reflection once more. "God, I’m fat" she whispered before rushing out. The cheerleader’s did another routine and out came the football players. The game started. Juuban High School was leading by 7; it was the last play, "HUT, HUT HIKE!" Darien through the ball across the field to Andrew, who caught it and ran to make a touch down. The crowd roared and the cheerleaders came on field to do their special routine. "WE ‘RE THE BEST!" "WE BEAT THE REST!" "WE"RE NUMBER ONE!" "TO REACH THE TOP!" "JUUBAN’S PRIDE" "IS WHAT WE’VE GOT!" At this they did a pyramid and Serena got on top. Slowly she stood, up and did various tricks. As Darien watched her closely, he noticed she looked a little pale. "SERENA!" Someone yelled and it brought Darien out of his thoughts. He rushed on to the field. Serena was lying there with her leg in an odd position. "What happened?" he asked the cheerleader next to him. "Serena was on top then all of a sudden she started swaying and before we could do anything she fell. She is unconscious right now and the paramedics are on their way" Darien walked over to Serena as she was being lifted onto the stretcher. "May I go with you" he asked the paramedics. They nodded thinking that it must be especially hard on the beautiful girl’s boyfriend. "Broken arm and leg, concussion," one of them shouted "I’m sorry young man," one of the nurses stopped Darien. "You can not go in there," Darien sighed and went to sit on one of the chairs. He called Andrew from his cell phone. "Andrew?" he paused, "yea, yea, I’m fine it’s Serena who isn’t. Get in touch with her friends and have them call her parents" he paused again. "She only has her dad? Call him," Darien hung up and sat waiting for news on how Serena was doing. ‘Why do I even care about how she is?’ ‘Because you love her’ ‘No I don’t, it’s just fun to tease her’ ‘Because you love her’ ‘No it’s because I am worried for a fellow classmate and I was there’ Darien said to himself, confident that that was the reason. He got up and went to get a drink. When he got back, he asked the nurse if he could see Serena. The nurse disagreed and told him to come back the next day. So Darien settled that he would return. The next day, the same nurse led Darien to Serena's room. Darien peered inside and saw Serena lying on the bed with tubes and cast holders everywhere. Serena opened her eyes when she heard a sound. "Darien! Didn’t expect to see you here," She said quietly, with a little humor in her voice. He smiled gently and sat down by the edge of the bed. He took her hand and started playing with it. "How are you feeling?" "I’m ok. Why do you care?" "Serena! I’m shocked!" Darien exclaimed, "I came to see how you were, and what am I supposed to do at the arcade if I’m not fighting with you?" Serena laughed lightly. "Spend money," Serena said thoughtfully, "Like most normal people do!" Darien laughed, but then his face grew serious. "Serena, what’s wrong? You were very pale yesterday. Are you eating enough?" Serena turned her head away from Darien. "Come on Serena, you can tell me," There was a long silence. "The doctors say I’m not eating enough, that I’m anorexic," Serena said quietly, and Darien looked at her surprised. "I guess I am, I can feel that I’m fat. But when I look in the mirror I try hard not to give in to what I feel. I try not to be one of those girls who thinks she's ugly and is fat. But I can’t help it. Someone planted that seed there." Darien stared at Serena, shocked. He didn’t know she felt this way. But he had one more question for her. "Who’s hitting you?" Serena’s head whipped around to face him. "What are you talking about?" She asked him sharply. "I did some research Serena, you couldn’t have gotten so many bruises from that fall." Serena didn’t say anything. "Yes, part of the bruises you have are from the fall, but some aren’t." Serena still didn’t say anything. "Dammit! Serena who is abusing you? You can tell me." Serena opened her mouth and then closed it. "I’m studying to be a doctor." Serena turned away from him. "I want to be a Lawyer, and ¼ of my money each year will go to the homeless, the hungry, or the orphans." Serena said softly. Darien looked at her. She had a dreamy look on her face. She wanted to do some good for the world but someone was stopping her. "Who’s stopping you?" Serena took a deep breath before answering. "You promise not to tell?" "Promise, what kinda doctor will I be if I do?" Serena smiled slightly before saying: "My dad." Darien’s eyes widened in surprise. "He won’t let me do anything. When I do something he doesn’t like, he hits me. He doesn’t do it that often though," Serena pleaded with Darien. This kinda of made sense, yesterday when Darien passed him in the hall, her father seemed a little protective. And that was probably why Serena didn’t want him walking her home. Which reminded him, "Serena, how did you know I sucked on my thumb?" Serena looked surprised for a second but then she giggled, "I didn’t it was just a lucky guess." Darien groaned, now she defiantly knew that he did. "I only do when I’m mad or upset," he offered meekly and Serena laughed joyously, all her troubles forgotten for a minute. She stopped laughing and they stared out the window where a mama bird was feeding her little birds. Serena smiled at the sight and so did Darien. "When I walk out this door, and you out this hospital," Darien paused, "Do you want to remain ‘enemies’?" Serena grinned and nodded. "Can’t let others suspect otherwise. Huh?" Darien agreed. "I look forward to our arguments," the both said in unison. They laughed before Darien stood up. "I should get going," "Don’t tell anyone Darien." Darien’s face grew dim. "I don’t know Serena, that seems pretty serious, he shouldn’t do that-" "If you tell him he’ll hurt me even more!" Serena begged, Darien sighed, "We’ll see," "NO!" Darien looked at her puzzled. "Give me a yes or a no." Serena said austerely. "Fine…yes," Darien said quietly looking down at his shoes. Serena smiled, "I know I could trust you. Even though you are my enemy" Darien just walked out of the room confused. *** Serena came back to school the following week. She was surrounded by her friends, and once again love notes floundered her locker. Although she and Darien fought constantly, they frequently shared a look that no one saw. It was a look of trust on Serena’s part and a look of uncertainty on Darien’s. Serena continued cheerleading and Darien watched her to make sure she ate well. *** "Meatball head!" "Don’t call me that!" "Whatever, just give me the milkshake Andrew prepared for me." Serena got a gleam in her eye and Darien hastily tried to change his order. "It’s ok, no need to get it. I’ll get it myself…." Darien trailed off and Serena walked over to him with the milkshake in hand. "Here." She handed it to him. "What did you do to it?" "Nothing," Serena said innocently. Darien didn’t trust her, but he still made a reach for it. "Opps, I tripped." Serena had spilled the milkshake on Darien’s shirt and it was dripping down. "MEATBALL HEAD!" Darien yelled while jumping up. "Whaddya do that for?" Serena shrugged and Darien growled at her. An idea came to him all of a sudden and Darien decided to put it in action. "Go wash this," he took his shirt off, showing his nice tan skin and his abs and bulging biceps. Serena drooled at the sight of his chest. "You got it dirty you wash it." Serena came back into reality, "You deserved it," She threw the shirt back. The whole arcade was watching amused. This was their favorite time. Squabble Time. Andrew always said their bickering brought in more customers. They just wanted to se who would win. "You spilled it," He threw the shirt back at her. "Fine, you wanna know what I’ll do with your shirt?" Serena took the shirt and started ripping it, "I’m gonna rip it in half so you keep one half and I’ll throw the other half away instead of washing it." A large ripping noise was heard through the arcade, which was dead silent, waiting to see what Darien would do. "You never cease to amaze me Meatball Head" Serena glared at him and threw half the shirt at him. "Stop calling me that! The name is Serena! Let’s say it together, Sur-ene-uh." "Meat-ball-head!" "Remind me how you passed 3rd grade, again?" The audience roared with laughed at Serena’s remark and Darien glared at her. "At least I’m not stupid," "Um, yea you are," The audience laughed again. "I’m stronger than you though," "Nuhuh" "Uhuh" "Nuhuh" "Arm wrestle than!" "Fine!" They went over to the counter and clasped hands. Andrew came over and refereed. "On your marks…get set…go!" Serena and Darien both strained and tried as hard as they could. "And it looks like Darien’s winning…no Serena is…wait now it’s tied again…" And this went on for a good 15 minutes. "You wanna just call it a tie?" "Ok." They unclenched their fiery hot hands. "Speak to me o hand" Darien said to his hand, Serena did the same thing. "Ok I gotta go, bye now" Serena waved with the opposite hand, her right one still disabled. Darien left shortly after her. The following month would be the prom and everyone scrambled to get a date. Serena and Darien both turned down any suitors that asked them. Amy got asked by Greg, Lita by Ken, Mina by Andrew, and Raye by Chad. All these guys were Darien’s closest friends. Together, the couples plotted to get Serena and Darien together. Serena sighed, she didn’t have anyone to go with. She had turned down every guy that asked her. Maybe she shouldn’t be picky. ‘Just pick the next guy who asks you’ ‘You already turned down all the guys…’ Then Melvin came along, he was this nerd who had a MAJOR crush on Serena the whole time. Serena’s eye’s widened in despair. ‘no, no, no’ Serena thought silently. "Serena, will you go to the prom with me?" ‘Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo’ "Um, Melvin-" Serena started to say. "she’s sorry but she’s going to the prom with me" Melvin sighed and left. "DARIEN!" "Hey Meatball Head" "Grrrrr… what are YOU doing here?" "Is that anyway to thank me?" Darien asked, masking his hurt. "Thank you for what?" Serena questioned, even though she had a good idea of what. "For saving you from going with Melvin," Darien said like he was stating the obvious, which he was. "Oh right, um… I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU DID THAT!" Serena yelled at Darien and he stepped back unexpectedly. "Excuse me!" He asked unsure. "That was extremely rude of you to tell him that you were going out with me!" "Well sorry if I thought you didn’t want to go with him!" "That doesn’t matter, you shouldn’t have lied." "So you would have rather gone with him?" Darien asked, unbelievingly. "No!" "Well then it’s settled," "What’s settled?" Serena asked, wondering how she could have lost this. "You’re grateful for my help and in order not to lie to Melvin, you’ll accompany me to the prom." "I never said that!" Serena sputtered angrily. "But it’s what you meant," Darien said, once more stating the obvious. "Grrrrr…you make me so….ugh! mad!" Serena growled at him and he just smiled. "So I guess this means you’ll go with me." And he left before she could refuse. Serena just stared at his retreating back. How had he managed to trick her? She looked around ad found herself in the school hall. Alone. With a lot of eyeballs peering in the windows. Crap. Everyone had seen. Serena sighed and turned around. Luckily it was the end of the day and she could go home. Serena walked out the school doors and hopped into her truck. Serena drove aimlessly around the city just thinking. She turned the radio on. ~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~ I might be the way Everybody likes to say I know watcha thinking bout me There might be a day You might have a certain way… ~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~ Serena turned the radio off. "That day is today," Serena muttered to herself. She did a U-turn and drove straight to Darien’s house, her mind made up. Somehow she knew where it was. Was it because Darien had left a slip of paper with his address and telephone on it and she had memorized it. Or was it cauz she had drive to his house so many times but chickened out. She turned the radio on again. This time a different song was playing. ~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~ Guess it’s meant to be For love to cause me misery Oh I’ve been down this road again Where the passion turns to pain And each time I saw love walk out the door I swore I’d never get caught up again But ain’t it true It takes what it takes… ~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~ Serena sighed and turned the engine off and got out of the car. She walked up to Darien’s house and rang the doorbell. ‘There’s no turning back now, Serena’ she chided herself. ‘not this time.’ The door opened and Darien appeared in his boxers. "Serena!" He said, surprised. "It’s 11 p.m.!" Serena hadn’t realized that it was that late. Her dad was gonna kill her. Oh well, this was worth it. Serena threw herself on Darien and kissed him with a passion she herself didn’t know she had. Her arms snaked around his neck as he slowly responded and snaked his own arms around her back. Their tongues massaged each other’s and his hands went up her shirt. In the background they heard a song playing. ~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~ Go on, go on, come on, leave me breathless Tempt me, tease me, until I can’t deny it This loving feeling Make me long for your kisses ~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~ Serena came up gasping for air. She looked at Darien who was also panting, "So is this a yes?" She kissed him fully on the lips and sweetly. "Yes." They kissed for another five minutes, exploring the depths of each other’s mouths. ~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~ You’ll never know the love I felt Waiting, Waiting for you So what’s a girl like me to do Drowning, Drowning in you ~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~ "I’m so happy!" Serena murmured into his mouth, and for once, it was true. After going out with all those guys, she finally found the one for her. They kissed again before breaking off. "Don’t you have to get home?" Serena stared at him in shock. "CRAP! He’s gonna kill me!" Serena started crying uncontrollably. "Shhh, it’s ok, I won’t let him," Darien soothed, rubbing her back comfortingly. "Can I stay here?" Serena asked fearfully. Darien thought for a moment. "No it’s better to go there and get it over with," "You’re going to let him kill me! You bastard, how can you!" Serena screamed, tears running down her face again. "I hate you! I hate your fucking sorry ass! I never want to see you again" Serena ran from the room without letting Darien explain. She got into her truck and drove away from Darien’s house. The radio was on again. ~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~ There’s a pain in her heart She’s tryin so hard to unwind Makes her cry in the night When visions so real make her blind Wants to break through the fear ~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~ Serena drove and drove. Finally she ended up in the park. She got out of her car and went to the spot were she and Darien let the butterfly run free. To bad she couldn’t do that. ‘No! I need to get away from this place!’ Serena thought to herself fearfully ‘Too many memories!’ She got up and ran to her car and started driving again. ~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~ I need someone I won’t stop till I find the one Who will start Belonging in my life I need someone.. ~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~ ‘I need someone to talk to!’ Serena thought confused. ‘but who? None of my friends know what I’m going through’ "WHO CAN I TALK TO?" Serena shouted into the night, sobbing. ‘Who can I talk to?’ she silently repeated, miserably. Without meaning to, she drove to the hospital that she had been at. ‘what am I doing here?’ she asked herself, curiously, her tears dry on her face. ‘oh that’s right, I remember, Jason is here’ "Jason who said I could always talk to him if I needed to," Serena said aloud. She walked into the hospital and looked around. The receptionist was a nurse named Betty. She walked up to Betty. "Betty, I need to see Jason." The nurse looked up at her tear stricken face and understood immediately. "Room 176," "Thank you so much," Serena thanked the old nurse and rushed up to the room. She knocked gently on his door. "Come in," a soft voice said from the other side of the bed. Serena walked in a saw Jason lying there on the bed. His hair was unusually spiked and there were candles by the bed. But Serena heeded no mind to that and rushed to his side. "Oh Jason! Everything is so messed up right now!" she cried out as kneeled down by his bedside. "Shhh… it’s ok," he comforted her. "Oh thank you so much. I couldn’t think of anyone else to come to," Serena sniffed and told him the whole story. He listened quietly. "What do you think I should do?" Serena asked him and he looked at her. "Why don’t you stay with me and think some stuff through and then you’ll decide what to do," Jason said as he looked at her with a weird glint in his eyes. "Think about what?" Serena asked, wondering why he was acting really different all of a sudden. "About coming to bed with me!" He jumped out of bed and onto her. He stifled her cries with a piece of tape and ripped her shirt off. He quickly undid her bra and took off her pants. He started taking off her underwear when the door banged open. "Serena!" Darien cried when he saw Serena naked in another boy’s arms. He backed away slowly, trying to get over the idea that Serena was having sex with another guy and he had just caught them, but then he saw the tape across her mouth and jumped forward. Darien quickly punched Jason until he was unconscious and stripped the tape off. Serena shrieked and tried to cover her body as fast as she could. "Get away from me!" She said trembling. "Please Serena, I don’t mean you any harm!" "Stay back! Get out of here! I hate you!" She screamed at him. Darien looked at her helplessly. What could he do? Just then, a hospital nurse came in and saw Serena practically naked and Jason on the floor bleeding. Coming to the wrong conclusion that Darien had hurt Jason and raped Serena, she screamed. "Ahhhhhhhhhh!" Her screams brought the security who quickly handcuffed Darien. "No wait! It wasn’t me! It was him!" But the guards paid to mind and took him away. The nurse acted quickly. She handed Serena clothes and put Jason back on the bed and tended to him. Serena just stared out the door where she saw Darien last. What had she done? Her arm and leg was fully healed since a week ago when she fell down. Her heart wasn’t though. She had been having nightmares ever since that night when they took Darien away. She should have said something, she tried to say something, but nothing came out. She could only watch in horror as they took him away. Her arm and leg hadn’t been completely healed then, so it would have been useless to run from Jason. He would have caught her. Serena would never forget the look on Darien’s face when they took him away. It was help, hurt, despair, and… sadness? Serena frowned, wasn’t he the one that wanted to take her to her father’s where he would kill her for sure? Serena had a flashback to where she left before he could explain. ~FLASHBACK~ "Wait! Serena! I didn’t mean that!-" Darien tried to explain, but Serena wasn’t hearing it. he had hurt her, he wanted her to be killed by her father! He knew her secret! She left without letting him explain, tears running down her face. "SERENA!" ~END OF FLASHBACK~ Serena shook herself out of the dream. It was too painful to remember the night. Her father had hired a lawyer to testify against Darien to get the money. There was nothing she could do about it. She was in shock. Hadn't spoken for a week. Couldn’t speak for a week. Her family and friends tried to help her speak, but gave up in the end, knowing she would come to. The whole school had found out about the incident and had been supportive, sending her gifts and get-well cards, and being extra friendly around her. She was still scared around guys, she wasn’t used to them. When she ran for track, Raye had said that it was like she was running away from something. She was. The pain. The trial was today. Since she couldn’t talk, she and her lawyer communicated by blinking. She asked a question, and Serena blinked once for yes and twice for no. Serena tried to her lawyer that Darien didn’t do it, but the lawyer misunderstood. Serena couldn’t write anything down because although her hand was fully healed, she still couldn’t write. By the time Serena got up, it was 9:00AM. She dressed up in her most formal clothes. A navy blue jacket with matching pants and a white turtleneck shirt. Her low flat, black shoes clicked as she walked against the tile in the courtroom. As Serena and her lawyer sat down, she looked around the courtroom. It was small with wooden benches and the judge’s table up high. Next to that was a small box. Serena wasn’t allowed to be interrogated. It began an hour later. Serena Tsukino watched as two officers led Darien in, hand cuffed. Jason sat on the benches behind Serena, making her uncomfortable. The judge entered the courtroom and people stood up. He was a tall black person with a powerful build. He sat down and the court guard signaled everyone else to sit. "Ready?" Judge Matthew asked. "Ready, Your Honor," the court guard responded. "Defense ready?" "Ready, Your Honor," Serena’s lawyer replied. "Ready," Darien’s attorney said. The prosecutor started with a long speech about why they were there and about the Founding Fore Fathers. Serena stole a quick glance at Darien, he was staring at the ground, his expression unreadable. He had grown buffer since she last saw him, she had heard that he worked out to get rid of his anger… if that’s what it was. Serena’s lawyer got up. "I call Darien Shields to the stand," Darien’s attorney leaned over and whispered something in his ear, he nodded and then got up and took a seat in the box. "Do you swear to tell the truth and nothing but the truth?" "I do," "Where were you on April 25?" "When?" "At, oh let’s say, 3 pm?" "I was going to play in a football game," Darien answered calmly. "You play football?" "Yes," "What position?" "Quarterback," "Ah, how long did the game last until?" Serena’s lawyer questioned. "7pm about," "And then what?" "I went to have pizza with the guys," "The guys? Who are they?" "Me, Ken, Greg, Chad, and Andrew," "They all play football also?" "Yes," "And did you go home right after?" "Objection. She’s leading," Darien’s lawyer stated. "Withdrawn. Continue," said the judge. "What time did you go home?" "Around 9pm," "So you stayed there for two hours. And then what?" "I got home and started on my homework." "Are you a good student?" "Yes, straight A’s" "What happened next?" "Serena came to my door and kissed me," Darien replied, not looking at Serena. Serena blushed and looked down. "What time," "11:00." "For sure?" "Yes, I remember telling her that." "What happened after?" "I told her she should get home, her dad would be worried about her and she ran out on me," Darien left the part out about where she had said she would be killed. "Did you follow her?" "Yes, I was concerned for her safety. "So you followed her to the hospital, then what?" "I saw that guy, Jason, trying to rape her." "And you punched him?" "Yes, and then Serena screamed and the nurses found us." "Did Serena ever tell you something confidential?" Serena’s lawyer tried a different tactic. Darien’s eyes found Serena’s and held a steady gaze. "No," Serena breathed a sigh of relief, the day was over, and the jury would make their decision tomorrow. After the jury took a two hour break, Jason had gone. Making up some crap about how she had run to him, saying that her boyfriend was gonna kill her. Serena tried to deny it but could speak. After Jason, the nurse, Betty went. She just told how Serena had entered looking scared and then heard her scream and ran up to find Jason unconscious and Serena half naked. Darien and Serena’s friends also testified. It looked as all evidence was against Darien. How could she help him? Did she want to? ~NEXT DAY~ Serena sat in the courtroom and fidgeted nervously. They had come to their decision rather quickly. Her lawyer held her hand and smiled. Serena tried to smile back. The jury came in and every stood up. After going through the normal proceedings, Judge Matthew announced his judgment. "After looking through all the evidence carefully and making our decision carefully, we have found Darien Shields guilty of trying to rape Serena Tsukino and breaking into the hospital and injuring a patient. Darien’s face noticeably drains. For the first time, Serena sees fear in his eyes. ‘Say something! Say something!’ Serena tried to force her mouth to talk but nothing came out. She opened and closed it. ‘Say it! You love him! Help him!’ What could she do? In the spur of the moment, Serena grabbed her lawyer’s shoulder and gestured wildly. "What is it Serena?" The courtroom suddenly went quiet and Darien turned to look at her. She stared back at him, "Darien?" she tried to whisper. It came out as a croak, she tried again. "Darien," Serena cleared her throat. It sounded a little better. "DARIEN!" She scream, it came out right. She ran to him with tears in her eyes. Serena hugged him with the courtroom silent in awe. Darien laid his head on top of hers and closed his eyes and savored to moment. "Look what he did to her!" Jason called out jealously. "He manipulated her!" "Shut up," Raye snarled, who had always hated Jason since she met him. She had seen the way he looked at Serena and didn’t like it. The judge sat back down. "Darien Shields has not said anything," Jason sputtered, looking for an excuse. "You lie!" Raye shouted. "He tried to rape her!" "Darien didn’t do it!" Serena had found the strength to say what she had been trying to say as Raye and Jason were fighting. Everyone looked at her. |
